Crafting Gear From Monster Genes

Chapter 30: Fourth Squad and Gauntlets

Crack.

Several pickaxes landed on the crate in front of Kreyn.

"Well, to be honest, I wasn’t expecting anything better than this."

[Miner’s Pickaxe (General Name)

[This is a tool miners use when working in mines to extract ore. It does the job, and with proper care and use, it can last quite a long time, but that’s where its advantages end.]

This was the first time Kreyn had decided to check the status of a simple tool. He would get the same result if he checked a shovel, an axe, or anything else.

’No Sockets, no Cells, not even a Tier. However, Tiers used to be everywhere, even on Groza’s sword, which had nothing else. Well, that’s to be expected from the most ordinary pickaxe, right?’

"Hey, boy, what do you think?"

The man with a thick beard and a heavy gaze stared at him.

It was Gukard - commander of the fourth squad and an experienced miner who had worked in the mines for many years.

"Not bad, I guess, but not good either. It’s just a pickaxe - I’ve got nothing else to say."

Gukard turned to Leora, who was changing into her combat gear at that moment. Her heels and leather outfit gave her a dominant appearance, but it wasn’t the best outfit for the mines.

"Leora, how long have we been working together? I’ve turned a blind eye to the fact that a third of our guys are now slaves you’ve dragged here against their will, but why is this guy here? If he’s a blacksmith, then I must be a wizard!"

"Don’t be such a grump, Gukard. This guy is our new recruit, and he’s a special kind of blacksmith. You’ll understand everything in time, but first and foremost, he’s a Hunter," Leora explained, slipping on her heavy boots as she spoke.

No sooner had she said this than the other miners exchanged glances. Their eyes lit up with anticipation, and a wave of joy swept through the squad.

"Boss, this is great! Now we can try to push further!"

"Damn Rahta Beasts! They’re always getting in our way!"

"Yes! They’re trying to destroy our tunnels! We can’t let that happen anymore!"

Tap. Tap. Tap.

At that very moment, hurried footsteps sounded from the side.

Kreyn turned to see Nario moving toward them. In his outstretched arms was a large black box, on top of which lay Kreyn’s boots.

"Don’t be surprised." Leora turned to him. "If we’re going to fight the Rahta Beasts, it would be foolish to deprive you of your weapon. Garius said these boots are capable of miracles."

But Kreyn was curious about something else at that moment.

"What’s in the box?"

Leora smirked. "You’ll see soon enough. I’m confident in my abilities, but Rahta Demons are no easy opponents. To defeat them, we’ll need more than just our bare fists."

"I’m here! I’m here!" Nario said hurriedly as he stopped, panting heavily.

He glanced at Kreyn and tossed his boots in front of him. "Take your stuff. If Leora hadn’t asked me to, I wouldn’t have brought you anything."

Kreyn was about to put on his boots, but he decided to do something else.

Tap.

He placed the boots on the box next to the pickaxe and stared at Gukard.

"Here. You can see what I’m capable of when I have the right materials. I doubt an ordinary blacksmith could make something like this."

"Pha!" Gukard chuckled, scratching his mustache. "You’ve got plenty of confidence, young man, but do your words match your actions?"

Kreyn’s gaze didn’t waver.

"Alright." Gukard nodded, walking over to the boots. "Let’s see what we’ve got here."

As soon as the system screen opened before Gukard, his eyes widened in disbelief.

Kreyn knew that at the very least, the Cells line would be shocking to the commander of the Fourth Squad.

Gulp.

Gukard gulped, and the other miners noticed it as well.

"Damn... If I had boots like that, I could take on all the Rahta Beasts by myself."

Leora shook her head. "I’ve seen them too, old man. You don’t even have enough energy to use them once. Only a Hunter can harness their full potential."

One by one, the miners came over and looked at Kreyn’s boots, reading their description and abilities.

They knew they wouldn’t be able to use them and were unlikely to ever have anything like them, but the sparkle in their eyes was like that of a child looking at Christmas presents.

Clasp.

Leora zipped up her leather combat suit and tied her hair into a bun.

"Alright, the show’s over. Gukard, did your men take everything with them?"

"Guys!" Gukard exclaimed, his voice powerful and stern. "Stop acting like fools! We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us! It doesn’t matter if you’re a miner or a Hunter, today we’re going to kick the Rahta Beasts out of Mine C11!"

They didn’t need much convincing. They’d wanted to do this for a long time.

"Yes!"

In a few minutes, the miners had prepared torches and explosives, and several of them, including Gukard, had shotguns in their hands. The rest armed themselves with pickaxes or hammers - the best they had.

In any case, Kreyn and Leora were supposed to do most of the work.

"Are you ready?" Leora asked, looking at Kreyn, who was slowly putting on his boots.

He nodded.

"Yes. But I want to ask something."

"Hmm?"

"What are the chances we’ll find 99% Orazit Crystal in there?"

Leora shrugged.

"We’ll only be able to find something like that if Mine C11 leads directly to their nest. There’s a chance, but it’s small."

Then, she turned around and opened a black box, catching Kreyn’s attention.

Clasp. Clasp.

She pulled out two gauntlets that reached up to her elbows. Two sharp golden ridges ran along the outer side. The gauntlets themselves were made of black material, while on the back of each hand was a golden coil with five golden wires extending from it and running along the fingers.

Leora smirked, savoring Kreyn’s curious and envious gaze.

"You haven’t seen what these little guys are capable of yet."

Crack.

She spread her fingers as electrical discharges ran through them. Then, she clenched her hands into fists and slammed them together, causing a cascade of sparks that startled some of the miners.

"Alright, boys."

Leora turned and headed straight for Mine C11.

"We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us - everyone, follow me!"
