It felt like Chen's entire life was flashing before his eyes.

For a moment, he couldn't think properly. All he could see was Skyy lying beneath that zombie, his frightened face and the blood running down his arm. Something inside Chen snapped. He didn't even realize what he was doing before the wind turbines shot out from his hands with incredible force.

The blades sliced through the zombie, tearing it away from Skyy and sending the creature crashing several feet away.

"Skyy… Skyy!"

Chen rushed toward him immediately.

Skyy was trembling badly, clutching his bleeding arm against his chest as tears streamed silently down his face. He looked so frightened that Chen's own heart seemed to hurt just looking at him.

"It's… it's fine," Chen whispered, though his voice was shaking just as badly. "You're okay. It's not that bad. You're going to be fine."

He wasn't sure if he was telling Skyy that or trying to convince himself.

Without wasting another second, Chen carefully picked him up and carried him back toward the cabin.

Skyy trembled in his arms, his fingers gripping Chen's clothes tightly as he buried himself against his chest. After a few moments, he finally looked up at him, his tear-filled eyes filled with pure fear.

"Am I… am I going to die?"

"No!"

The answer came out immediately.

"No, you're not going to die," Chen said firmly, holding him tighter as he rushed toward the cabin. "You're going to be fine. Trexa can help you. She can help you, okay? She can… she can fix this."

He kept mumbling the words under his breath as though repeating them enough times would somehow make them true.

He threw open the cabin door and hurried inside, carefully lowering Skyy onto the moss-covered floor.

"Trexa can help. She'll know what to do."

Chen quickly looked around the cabin, searching for the familiar little rat.

Then he saw her.

Trexa was sleeping peacefully on the rocking chair.

"Trexa!" Chen rushed over and grabbed her, carrying her back toward Skyy. "You've got to help him!"

He placed the little rat beside Skyy and shook her gently. "Trexa, wake up. Come on, wake up!"

Trexa remained completely still, sleeping as peacefully as though nothing had happened.

"Wake up!" Chen shook her again, this time harder.

His expression slowly changed as he realized what was happening.

Trexa had already used her powers to get them out of danger once before. Using that much power had taken a toll on her, and in order to recover, she had entered a deep hibernation.

She wasn't going to wake up anytime soon.

"Fuck…"

The realization made the panic inside Chen grow even worse.

For the first time, he had no idea what to do.

Skyy was hurt.

Blood…blood was everywhere.

"No, no, no…"

Chen quickly turned back toward Skyy.

He tore off his shirt and pressed the fabric firmly against the bite wound on Skyy's arm, trying to stop the bleeding.

"Hold on," he whispered, his hands trembling as he tightened the cloth around the wound. "Just hold on, Skyy. Please."

Skyy winced from the pain but didn't complain. He simply looked at Chen with tear-filled eyes, his frightened expression making his heart sink even further.

Chen frantically searched through his pockets, pulling out whatever he could find… but none of them were enough. He already knew that.

He knew what a bite from a high-level zombie meant.

Mutation.

His hands slowly stopped moving as the realization settled over him. There was no simple medicine that could prevent it, and no guarantee that medicine would be able to help Skyy once the virus began spreading through his body.

Chen's gaze fell on Skyy.

The young man looked so pale now. His face had lost almost all of its color, and his lips trembled slightly as he tried to stay conscious.

Skyy had probably never been exposed to the zombie virus before.

That meant there were only two possibilities.

Either his body would fight against the virus, and he would survive the mutation, perhaps even awakening powers in the process…

Or the virus would win.

Chen's throat tightened at the thought. He immediately shook his head, refusing to let himself think any further.

"No," he whispered to himself, wiping his face roughly. "Don't think about that."

There was a fifty percent chance.

That was what he needed to remember.

Fifty percent meant Skyy could survive.

He had to survive.

Chen looked back at him and forced himself to take a deep breath. He couldn't fall apart now. Skyy was already terrified, and if he showed him how scared he was, it would only make things worse.

Right now, Skyy needed someone to be strong for him.

"It's going to be okay," he whispered. "We're going to get through this."

He carefully began cleaning the wound, trying to be as gentle as possible. But the moment the blood and dirt were wiped away, Chen's stomach twisted.

The bite was much worse than he had first realized.

The skin had been torn apart by the zombie's teeth, leaving deep, jagged marks across Skyy's arm. Seeing the serrated wounds made him grimace, and his fingers trembled as he tried to clean around them without causing Skyy any more pain.

"Does it hurt? Im sorry.. im so sorry.. im.."

"It's okay," Skyy tried to smile, but it was weak and unconvincing. "I'm okay."

"hmm…." Chen bit his trembling lips.

He had been holding the tears back for so long that his body seemed to finally give up. Before long, he was sobbing until his vision blurred.

Chen roughly wiped his face with the back of his hand. "Damn it…"

He took a shaky breath and forced himself to concentrate again.

Crying wasn't going to help Skyy.

Panicking wasn't going to help him either.

He needed to keep the wound clean. He needed to stop the bleeding as much as possible, keep Skyy hydrated, and make sure he stayed strong when the fever came.

All he could do now was wait and pray that Skyy's body was strong enough to fight it.
