A wailing, mournful tune from a xun flute drifted out of the passageway. It was ethereal and indistinct, making it impossible to pinpoint the player's location.

The Black-haired Corpse Demons, covered in shaggy black fur with blood-red eyes, lunged at Luo Anning relentlessly.

Though their bodies were stiff, their strength was terrifying, and their movements stirred up fierce gusts of wind.

Moreover, their bodies were unnaturally tough, like they were made of steel and iron. They could ignore any injuries and would continue their assault even after being struck.

Luo Anning's gaze was calm. She brandished her longsword, unleashing a drizzle of sword light. Fine raindrops began to fall from the air, striking the Corpse Demons and ringing out with the CLANG CLANG of metal on metal.

The Kan Water Realm!

Relying on the Kan Water Realm she had only recently comprehended, Luo Anning actually managed to hold the Corpse Demons at bay for the time being.

When Hu Guangshao saw this, he was so filled with hatred he nearly ground his teeth to dust.

His face twisted into a savage sneer, his eyes burning with intense jealousy. He wished he could ravage Luo Anning to death with his own two hands.

'Why?'

'We're both geniuses from Wuling City, so why did *she* comprehend a Realm and not me?'

'Damn it!'

'She deserves to die!'

'How dare any of you be stronger than me, Hu Guangshao!'

At that moment, a continuous beam of sword light suddenly erupted from Luo Anning's longsword, flashing across the neck of a Corpse Demon.

The Corpse Demon's head rolled to the ground, and its body finally collapsed, motionless.

Corpse Demons had skin of bronze and bones of iron, making them nearly impervious to weapons. Their only weakness was their head.

Only by severing the neck or destroying the head could one take them down.

Seeing the fallen Corpse Demon, Luo Anning's expression grew even more composed.

Her Sword Technique grew fiercer, each strike aimed directly at a Corpse Demon's neck. In moments, five or six of them had been decapitated, their bodies falling lifeless to the ground.

Hu Guangshao started to panic.

'Luo Anning is stronger than I expected. That woman... she actually comprehended the Kan Water Realm!'

"Uncle Zhao, quick! Send in the Red-haired Corpse Demon!"

Hu Guangshao shouted into the pitch-black passageway.

From within the passageway, the xun's tune faltered for a moment. Then, a dry, hoarse voice replied, "Yes."

The xun's music resumed, its tune growing more melancholic, like the sigh of a forlorn lover.

THUD!

THUD!

The ground trembled. A Corpse Demon a full head taller than the others, its shaggy fur a stark red, stepped out from the horde.

The teeming horde of Black-haired Corpse Demons parted like a tide, clearing a path for the Red-haired Corpse Demon to walk straight up to Luo Anning.

"We're doomed! There's a Red-haired Corpse Demon!"

Feng Zhengqian cried out in panic.

"Shut up!"

Luo Anning snapped without turning her head. "You are under the protection of the Taiping Bureau. As long as I'm alive, you won't die."

Her expression was grave, and a cold glint shone in her eyes.

Even now, she hadn't considered fleeing.

Her mission was behind her, and she would never abandon it lightly—not even if she were protecting a stray cat or dog.

Being snapped at by Luo Anning, Feng Zhengqian's face took on an expression of utter infatuation.

After her sharp retort, Luo Anning leaped into the air, becoming a streak of light. Sword and wielder as one, she charged the Red-haired Corpse Demon.

She had encountered Corpse Demons before and knew that this red-haired variety was incredibly difficult to deal with. At a minimum, they possessed the strength of a martial artist at the Perfection of the Blood Exchange stage.

If a Red-haired Corpse Demon regained its sentience, it could even be on par with an expert of the Rebirth Realm.

Although the one before her had not regained its sentience, its power was surely greater than her own.

'I have to strike first to gain the advantage. Otherwise, I won't stand a chance.'

True blood surged through Luo Anning's body as she unreservedly unleashed the full power of her eightfold Blood Exchange.

Her Sword Technique, imbued with the Kan Water Realm, descended like a torrential downpour.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

A series of crisp, metallic clashes rang out.

The Red-haired Corpse Demon was clearly far more agile than the Black-haired ones. It even knew to protect its own neck.

Just as Luo Anning's sword came down, it threw up an arm to block its neck.

With a wet THWACK...

...Luo Anning's sword severed the Red-haired Corpse Demon's right hand. But the force of the blow was diminished, and when the blade struck its neck, it only produced a shower of sparks instead of cutting through.

In that split second, she had no time to execute a second strike.

The Red-haired Corpse Demon had already thrown a ferocious punch with its left hand, the force behind it savage and immense.

Before the fist even connected, a foul, stenching gust of wind washed over her.

Luo Anning pulled her sword back to block.

BOOM!

The Red-haired Corpse Demon's fist smashed into the flat of her sword.

The blade bent at a terrifying angle, and the incomparably ferocious power sent Luo Anning sliding backward, her feet scraping along the ground.

She slid back until she nearly collided with Feng Zhengqian before she managed to regain her footing. Without a moment's hesitation, she bent her knees and leaped forward again.

Her sword style shifted from piercing thrusts to circling slashes, fully embodying the lingering, binding nature of her Kan Water Realm as she engaged the Red-haired Corpse Demon in a close-quarters struggle.

Her expression was as serious as ever, but deep in her eyes, a flicker of worry appeared.

'Su Mu still hasn't caught up...'

'The cave passages are a maze. Did he take a wrong turn and run into other Corpse Demons? If he walked into an ambush, wouldn't he be in even greater danger?'

...

"Found you."

What Luo Anning didn't know was that at the very moment Hu Guangshao called for the Red-haired Zombie, a man in another part of the passageway had whispered in a low, steady voice.

...

"Luo Anning, you alone can't possibly stop this many of my Corpse Demons.

If you kill Feng Zhengqian right now and devote yourself to serving me, I might just let you live."

Seeing Luo Anning being forced onto the defensive by the Red-haired Corpse Demon, Hu Guangshao let out a triumphant laugh.
