Demon Lord: Erotic Adventure in Another World
Chapter 899: The Missing Imperial FleetAfter his confession, Serena stared at him without speaking.
For once, there was no sharp comeback waiting behind her lips, no jealous complaint or teasing remark prepared to save her dignity. Her eyes remained fixed upon his face while the divine aura that had begun leaking from her body slowly faded into the night.
"You have the most beautiful eyes."
Behind her, Nerim quietly turned towards the ocean, her cheeks flushed bright pink along with her blue scales.
Asmodeus noticed the gesture and appreciated it.
Serena’s lips trembled as she gathered up the words she wished to speak.
"...You bastard."
"Hm?"
"You always do this."
Her hands rose against his chest, clutching the fabric covering him rather than pushing him away.
"Do what?"
"Wait until I’m furious, upset, ready to tear your stupid head off... then say something that makes it impossible to stay angry."
Asmodeus couldn’t help smiling because it was true. This method was his way of fighting back against his wives and their illogical anger and mood swings. Though he didn’t want to break the mood, he so quickly clung to her hips with both hands.
"So you believe me?"
"I didn’t say that."
"Serena."
"I said nothing!"
She buried her face against him before he could see any more, wrapping both arms tightly around his waist. Asmodeus felt the warmth of her cheek through his clothing, followed shortly by something damp. "...idiot..."
He didn’t respond, or even see that as an insult anymore. There wasn’t anything that needed saying as his arms closed around her back.
’She’s trembling...’
For all the years they’d known one another, Serena had always seemed larger than life. A goddess who could watch centuries pass, someone who had protected him long before he possessed the strength to protect himself.
Yet somehow she’d become this frightened woman in his arms.
Perhaps she’d always been both.
But it was only now that he could see that clearly.
"You’re unfair," Serena muttered.
"I know."
"And selfish."
"Hahahaha..."
"Unfaithful."
Asmodeus paused. "...That’s complicated."
Serena punched his chest, her lips pressed together, creating the most beautiful pout, as she furrowed her brows, trying to show an ’angry’ face. Yet failed, because Asmodeus only saw his beautiful fox wife.
"Ow."
"You deserved that one."
Nerim released a small laugh from beside the battlement, quickly covering her mouth when Serena glanced towards her.
"I’m sorry, Your Majesty."
"Don’t bother pretending to be apologetic. You are terrible at it."
Serena wiped beneath her eyes before pulling away, though one hand remained firmly wrapped around Asmodeus’s arm as if she feared allowing even that much distance between them.
"Do you feel better now, Your Majesty?"
The two women glanced at each other; there wasn’t the same hostility as before. Instead, Serena just smiled faintly. "Just call me Serena. Why are you acting like this?" Serena herself hated it when the other wives tried to create distance by calling her the empress or Her Majesty.
"When I first descended, I was so foolish..." She mumbled, her eyes glistening as she watched the sky and distant moon. "I should have banned you from seeing the other women and taken you for myself... hmph!"
’Well, that would’ve been something to see.’
He recalled the night she appeared and accepted all his women, creating that stupid tea ceremony where they would all gather and discuss things in secret.
Because of that...
’No, forget it. It’s not my place to comment.’
Asmodeus glanced between them.
’It seems Nerim’s finally learning to fit in, though.’
That formerly rough mercenary had adapted surprisingly quickly to life around Serena and the others, although whether that was a good thing remained questionable.
He placed an arm around Serena’s waist.
"Now that my wife has finished threatening our marriage, can we return to what we were talking about?"
Serena’s eyebrow twitched.
Asmodeus laughed, only for Serena to elbow him beneath the ribs.
"Fine, fine."
His smile gradually faded as he looked past the battlements towards the dark sea, even though the distance was beyond what any human could see. He found it wasn’t so difficult after advancing to the next level.
From this height, there was no sign that anything had happened three days earlier, only the silver reflection of the moon trembling across the waves and the scattered lights of ships returning to Lumeria’s harbour.
"The Imperial fleet..." Asmodeus murmured. "You said they fled during the battle?"
Serena’s hand remained around his arm, but her expression became more serious. "That’s what everyone assumed at first. Their formation broke apart shortly before Leviathan’s final rampage, and once we finally had enough people free to look for them, there was nothing left to find."
"Nothing?"
"Even their dead were gone..."
Nerim finally moved away from the battlement and turned to face them. "There should have been wreckage, bodies, broken masts, something drifting back towards shore. Even with the currents disturbed by Leviathan, an entire fleet cannot simply disappear without leaving traces."
"Unless they fled before the actual battle..."
Asmodeus frowned because that was exactly what bothered him.
The Imperial soldiers weren’t friends, and he certainly hadn’t forgotten the contempt their representatives showed towards Serena and Lumina. Still, he had fought beside enough armies to know what destruction looked like.
Much less that their emperor needed a dragon.
A fleet that large would leave a graveyard behind.
"Could Leviathan have swallowed them?"
Nerim shook her head after a moment’s thought. "Some, certainly. That creature was enormous enough that I wouldn’t dismiss anything, but not all of them without us noticing. I could still feel disturbances throughout the water while we fought, and there was something strange towards the end."
Serena looked at her. "You never mentioned that."
"I wasn’t sure enough to put it into a report."
Nerim’s expression became apologetic, though there was something harder beneath it now, a glimpse of the mercenary who’d survived by trusting instincts long before she ever became Asmodeus’s lover.
"The sea changed slightly the moment we attacked, like something blocked off the southern sector of the ocean with a giant barrier. It temporarily shut off my connection to the water, but before I could understand what happened... it vanished."
"When?"
"Around the time His Majesty transformed."
Asmodeus fell silent because he couldn’t answer either. His memories of that period weren’t perfect. Leviathan had beaten him so badly that he could barely breathe before its power flooded through him, his body undergoing another violent change while his senses expanded far beyond anything he’d experienced before.
There were flashes he remembered clearly, others that seemed buried beneath overwhelming amounts of information.
’Could I have caused it?’
Serena must have read something from his face because her fingers tightened around his forearm.
"Don’t immediately decide everything strange in the world is your fault."
"...???"
’How did she know?!’
"Fool, do you think I am your wife for show?"
"..."
"...Maybe."
"Hmph."
Nerim smiled faintly, but quickly returned to the matter at hand. "There is another possibility. The Imperials may have possessed some method of retreat we don’t understand. Their fleet was prepared far better than we expected, and they clearly came to these waters knowing more about Leviathan than they admitted."
"That sounds more believable."
Serena’s lips tightened.
"And more irritating."
Asmodeus glanced towards her.
"Since they escaped intentionally without helping, I am sure they never desired to honour that agreement..."
Serena released his arm and folded both hands beneath her chest, staring towards the ocean as though the missing ships might suddenly return simply because she’d become annoyed enough.
"We lost thousands during that battle. Ships, soldiers, civilians along the coast... and while we’re still counting the dead, those bastards haven’t sent so much as an explanation."
Asmodeus found it annoying, but he couldn’t find an answer either.
"I think we should bolster the southern coastline... somehow, I think they are planning something big and dangerous..."
He understood her anger, but something in his stomach refused to accept the simple answer that they’d abandoned Lumeria.
’Bastards... were they scouting our forces and power?!’
"We’ll investigate before deciding they’re responsible."
Serena glanced at him. "You intend to send someone after them?"
"Eventually. First, I want every report from the battle, especially anything involving the fleet during the final hour. Sailors, scouts, survivors, anyone who saw something unusual. But before that, I believe we need to compensate the families of those who fell in battle, help Grigor, who was struck twice with Leviathan’s beams... There is too much to do."
"I already ordered most of that gathered."
Asmodeus looked at her.
Serena lifted her chin slightly, striking a proud pose.
"What? Did you think I spent three days sitting beside your bedroom door?"
"Considering tonight..."
"Don’t ruin the moment."
"Hahaha."
She almost elbowed him again, but Nerim suddenly inhaled sharply.
Her blue eyes had changed. The transformation wasn’t dramatic, yet once he noticed the slight difference in colour spreading through her irises, he immediately knew who was looking back at him.
Nerim’s posture shifted from the upright soldier to a seductive, alluring slouch against the wall, revealing all her womanly charms.
The gentle modesty she usually carried disappeared as her lips curved into a slow smile, her head tilting as though she’d been listening quietly for far longer than either of them realised.
"How troublesome..."
"You?!"
Serena also seemed to notice the change, but couldn’t help but shake her head and stop speaking after one word.
The woman inside Nerim ignored her irritation and looked directly at Asmodeus.
For a moment, he found himself thinking about the other Ein still chained below them, which made the similarity in their origins feel even stranger.
"What is it?"
The fallen Arbiter lifted Nerim’s hand, lazily winding a strand of pink hair around one finger.
"You promised me a reward if I helped you in that battle..." Her voice was sultry, hot and sweet, like a siren standing before him as Mei fluttered her long lashes with a faint smile. Asmodeus struggled to clear his throat.
"Did I?"
"Master..." Mei pressed Nerim’s body closer, her green eyes narrowing as she traced one fingertip slowly along his chest. "Surely you wouldn’t make your poor, devoted Mei beg after she fought so desperately for you?"
Serena’s expression immediately soured.
"Oh, absolutely not."
She turned on her heel, silver hair whipping behind her as she stormed towards the staircase. "I have reports to finish, and unlike certain shameless ghosts, some of us actually have work!"
"Serena—"
"Enjoy your reward!"
Her footsteps disappeared below.
Asmodeus sighed, while Mei merely watched her leave before wrapping both arms around his neck.
"My, my... your Empress is frightening tonight."
"You did that deliberately."
"Of course."
Her lips brushed beside his ear, sending a seductive tingle shooting down his spine, as he felt her soft breasts squeeze against his bare chest.
"I wanted you to myself."
