Asmodeus caught her wrist before those wandering fingers could slip any lower.

Normally, the shameless expression on Mei’s face might have tempted him to play along, especially when Nerim’s body pressed so naturally against his own. However, Serena’s footsteps still echoed somewhere below the ramparts, and the faint wetness he’d felt against his chest only minutes ago remained much harder to ignore.

"Not tonight."

Mei’s smile slowly faded.

"Hm?"

"I said not tonight. Be good and wait for me in your room."

She leaned backwards without pulling away from his grip, studying him through Nerim’s green eyes as though something far more interesting than rejection had just occurred.

"How peculiar..."

"What is?"

"You."

Asmodeus sighed and released her wrist. "You’re going to have to be more specific."

Rather than answering immediately, Mei turned towards the staircase Serena had disappeared through. Her expression lost some of its usual obsessive sweetness, and when she finally looked back, there was a strange curiosity in her eyes.

"It’s the first time you’ve actually made a choice like this... and really meant it."

"Meant what?"

"What you told Serena."

The pair stared at each other, but Asmodeus could feel the dagger from her gaze piercing his chest.

"Nerim and I were standing right there, Master. Even trapped inside her body, I’m not deaf."

"So?"

"So..." She stepped closer again, though this time there was no hand sliding across his body. "You have so many women. Some have loved you longer, some have suffered beside you longer, and others have children with you. Yet you told Serena that she was the one you loved most.

The former Arbiter’s lips parted slightly, blowing hot air against his neck, before she closed her eyes and clung to his body as if scared he might leave.

"Do you understand how significant this is...

...or were you just saying it to stop her tantrum?"

Asmodeus glanced towards the staircase.

’Of course she heard everything... that was the whole point.’

For years he’d avoided putting those feelings into words, partly because doing so felt cruel. Yumiko had been his first genuine lover after coming to this world, long before becoming a Demon, or gaining any of the titles that now followed his name.

She had slept beside him when they were simply two people struggling to survive in a cold castle room, and there was a part of Asmodeus that would always belong to those memories.

By all rights, perhaps Yumiko should’ve been the woman he loved most.

But hearts didn’t obey things like seniority.

"I understand."

Mei’s eyes widened slightly before quickly shrinking back to her normal seductive gaze.

"You didn’t even hesitate."

"Why would I?"

"You’ve got a point... honestly, I always thought Velvet or that fox girl would’ve been your favourite."

"Yumiko is different."

"Different?"

Asmodeus rested his arms upon the battlement once more, looking over the distant lights of Lumeria.

"She was the beginning."

The words came easier when he wasn’t looking directly at Mei.

"Before all this, before I had an empire or understood anything about gods, she was there... along with Erika, who accepted me when I became lost. Of course I cannot forget Princess Linea... who gave up everything to accept my darkness."

’Linea... I’ve taken Asmodea’s love for granted too...’

He didn’t speak with any frivolity or bravado, and Mei quietly listened as he slowly waded through his thoughts. "There are things I can remember with Yumiko that nobody else can replace, because nobody else was there to experience them."

"Lumina is..." Asmodeus paused, struggling for the correct description. "Lumina is tied to me in a way that’s difficult to explain. Maybe because of what she was to me before, maybe because of what we’ve become now. I can spend days alone with her and forget the rest of the world exists... sometimes just bullying her, slapping her ass... and taking out my anger on her body is part of my guilty pleasure."

He grimaced, realising that his hatred towards Lumina as a goddess lingered in this kind of manner, and yet recalling her blissful face each time he spanked or choked her during sex kind of made it feel stupid.

Mei’s lips curled faintly, but thankfully she didn’t interrupt.

"And Velvet understands a side of me that most people cannot; she is part of the reason I was able to pull through the dark times, even before she became my woman. Velvet was my teacher, a woman... that cannot be replaced."

A small laugh escaped her.

Asmodeus looked down at his hands, remembering battles, shattered weapons and Velvet’s excited smile whenever they faced something strong enough to threaten them.

"She understands why fighting makes me feel alive. She doesn’t try to change that part of me, and sometimes I think she understands it better than I do."

Mei’s head tilted.

"But Serena is still above them?"

Asmodeus finally looked at her.

"Yes."

It sounded harsh when spoken so plainly.

Yet denying it after what he’d told Serena would be worse.

"E-Even above me... and above Nerim?"

When she spoke, two voices overlapped; it wasn’t the sensual tone of Mei alone, but also the rugged and sexy voice of Nerim.

’This...’

Asmodeus couldn’t mistake her voice or the genuine concern and curiosity.

Both Mei and Nerim sought his answer.

"Yes."

"Why?"

He thought about that question for several seconds.

Although it seemed like Serena had entered his life later than Yumiko, and unlike Lumina, there wasn’t some ancient relationship tying their souls together. She hadn’t shared Velvet’s hunger for battle either.

’No, that might be a lie.’

Serena had always been there.

She had always been watching him from the moment he was born, maybe before.

When he struggled, lost hope or failed.

’How many lifetimes did Serena watch me fail, watch me suffer at the hands of fate...’

Though his emotional bonds might be stronger with other women, and he might seek their bodies more often than Serena. Asmodedues firmly believed he wasn’t wrong, because whenever he was lost, isolated or needed guidance, he looked for Serena.

Whenever he returned after being gone too long, he wondered what expression Serena would make when she saw him.

When the wives argued, when political problems became irritating, when he felt lost beneath responsibilities he never imagined carrying...

Somehow, she was there.

"I don’t know when it happened... maybe it was the moment she descended during my fight against the Demon Queen... Or when she showed me my previous failures in that old, fallen dungeon..."

Mei watched him carefully, while her eyes glistened in two different colours.

"That’s not much of an answer."

"It is the only honest one."

Asmodeus turned towards the staircase again.

"At some point, Serena stopped being one of the women waiting for me at home."

His voice became quieter.

"She became... home itself."

This time Mei and Nerim didn’t interrupt or make a joke; instead, they just watched Asmodeus in silence.

Something shifted behind her eyes, perhaps because the woman speaking through Nerim had spent so much of her own existence desperately chasing precisely that kind of place beside him.

"So that’s it..."

"What?"

"The position I can never steal."

Asmodeus frowned.

"Mei."

"I’m not complaining."

She smiled again, although there was less seduction behind it now.

"Well... perhaps a little."

Her fingers brushed Nerim’s pink hair away from her cheek.

"I used to believe that if I became beautiful enough, useful enough, devoted enough, eventually you would look at me and forget everyone else."

"Mei..."

"No... It’s not just Mei; I also thought I could..."

"But you won’t be able to change or forget Serena no matter what we do, right?"

"No."

He answered immediately without hesitation, wanting to remain as earnest as possible.

She laughed quietly through Nerim’s lips.

"How cruel."

"Would you rather I lie?"

"...No."

Asmodeus studied her for a moment before placing one hand gently against Nerim’s cheek.

"But, Nerim... Mei, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way. It doesn’t change that I love you; you’re also the mother of my child... so stop treating this like you need to defeat my wives or compete... Serena is Serena, and you are you."

Mei stiffened, while tears dripped from one of Nerim’s eyes.

"You don’t need ot fight for a place beside me... from the moment you revealed yourself, I had already accepted you. Mei."

"A-Ah.... that...."

It was mysterious to Asmodeus just how cute the seductive ghost who specialised in seduction and charm became when embarrassed.

"M-Master shouldn’t say such dangerous things to obsessive women."

However, instead of his usual complaints or stupid responses telling her to stop bothering him... he clamped both cheeks of Nerim’s face and glanced down at her with the brightest smile on his face.

"Obsess all you like, haunt me until the end of time... I will accept all of it."

For several seconds, neither Mei nor Nerim responded.

Then those mismatched eyes slowly filled with tears.

"Master... that’s unfair."

Asmodeus smiled, pressing his forehead against hers while his thumbs brushed away the warm droplets staining Nerim’s cheeks.

"Get used to it."

A strange laugh escaped her, halfway between Nerim’s gentle warmth and Mei’s usual seductive sweetness. Then both personalities seemed to settle at once, leaning into his hands without trying to hide their happiness.

"...We love you too."

His chest tightened.

Somewhere below, Serena was probably still storming towards her office, pretending she wasn’t waiting for him to follow.

Asmodeus glanced towards the staircase.

"Come on."

"Where?"

He started walking with both his hands outstretched to the two women. No longer treating them as a single person, the change was subtle, but the ghostly silhouette of Mei immediately took his left palm, while Nerim took the right.

"To bring my jealous little Empress home."
