In the face of death, the world slowed down to a crawl.
A creepy, monstrous face grew larger and larger in Yu Zhiye’s vision…
His mind was screaming: those jaws will eat his face! They’ll eat him! Move! Move!!!
Yet his body was like lead and no matter how he screamed, it refused to react!
Ah… fudge. Does his story end here?
Suddenly, like a light breaking through the darkness, an arrow skewered through the predator in mid-fall!
Just like that, death sailed back away to the side! Thunk!
The arrow pinned the giant spider to a stalagmite.
The monstrous arachnid struggled for a few seconds and let out one last screech before curling up into a ball, falling silent. Dead.
All the tension in Yu Zhiye’s body relaxed and he collapsed to the floor, gasping. Damn. What a close shave! Thank heavens!
“Eih! One shot, one kill! Ehe~”
Yu Zhiye turned to his savior: the little fairy. “Miss Xiao Ling, I never knew you were this amazing!”
“Humph! What did you expect?” Xiao Shuling puffed her little chest. “This miss is the top shot at my school’s archery club and even took champion in regionals once! Is this miss awesome or what!”
Yu Zhiye didn’t hold back his praise. “Awesome! Really awesome! This time, you’re really saved my ass!”
Even Jack joined in to shower her with praise. “Amazing! Little missy really went and done it! Bwahaha!”
“Eih! Ehehe~” Xiao Shuling: praise me more.jpg!
After fluffing a little fairy’s ego up, Jack helped Yu Zhiye up, “Steve, told ya to keep a lookout and you almost got butchered. What kinda lookout are you? Bwahaha!”
Yu Zhiye rolled his eyes.
“Think I didn’t stare at the horror-film obvious? But just look how dark this cave is. The torch light can’t even reach the ceiling!”
“I don’t have night vision. How am I supposed to see those insidious killers that don’t even make sound when they move!”
“Aight, aight, sheesh.” Jack gave him a shoulder pat. “No need to get so worked up, Steve. You know I’m just joking. Even I can’t see shit around these parts.”
The party of three can’t help but glance up at the dark shroud overhead with trepidation.
What else is hiding up there?
“Aight, instead of staring and shivering in our boots, let’s figure out what we’re dealing with.”
“Umu! Umu!”
A little fairy skipped on ahead to collect the XP orbs and both men didn’t fall behind.
Axes were at the ready, but obviously, there wouldn’t be surprises if there’s XP available.
Yu Zhiye watched the little goblin squatting down to poke the dead creature with the arrow she pulled out and felt his courage return enough to join in the dissection.
“Damn, spiders. Why does it have to be spiders?”
“Yeah?” Jack plucked out a spider eye and chuckled. “Got a thing for spiders, Steve?”
“If it’s from the game? No. But if they’re from some other horror movie…”
Now that everybody got an up-close-and-personal examination of the spider, anybody could tell something was wrong.
These weren’t the cutely-designed, blocky mob creature that hisses to warn the player when they’re nearby.
This was a dog-sized widow with gray spiky hair and a grotesque humanoid face that had actual teeth on top of fangs!
“Well, I’ll be damned. Sure doesn’t look as friendly as the cuties in the game.” Jack rubbed his scruffy beard thoughtfully. “But this image really does ring a bell... I just can’t quite remember where…”
“Gray Widowers from The Mist.” Yu Zhiye was sure. “No doubt about it.”
After all, its ugly features and the corrosive trait of its web was too obvious.
How corrosive?
Yu Zhiye did a check on his stone axe and saw it lost a chunk of durability!
“Damn these equipment killers!”
“Bwahaha! Good thing you can craft more, Steve!”
“We don’t have infinite sticks, Jack. Fight these suckers a few times and all our axes will get scrapped.”
“Hey, right you are, Steve. Best not to mess with these things. I just hope they’re not guardians for each emerald vein…”
“Eih! Even if there are, this miss will turn them all into target practice!”
“Hey, little missy, be careful what you wish for…?”
Jack suddenly went quiet and so did the other two.
But even so, the cave wasn’t quiet at all. The faint sound of squelching could be heard, as if there were creepy crawlies traveling over sticky web…
Normally, spiders should be silent hunters, but now...
It sounded more like: there were so many that their crawling can no longer be hidden and even the cave was faintly shaking!
Jack immediately guarded their little archer behind his back. “Bogeys inbound! Prepare yourselves!”
Yu Zhiye started to sweat. “Jack… we’re going to fight?”
“Hold your ground! We have to figure out where they’re coming from first…”
Jack’s didn’t even finish his words when they all saw gray widowers descending from the ceiling on webs while swarms of baby spiders were crawling out from the dark cracks between the stalagmites!
“Shit. Never mind. RUN!”
Nobody needed to be told twice! Everybody bolted down the path they came from!
Behind the team vaulting and leaping down the ledges, an army of creepy crawlies scuttled out from the darkness and chased after the fleeing prey!
A glance back and Yu Zhiye’s hair stood on ends!
Floor, ceiling, and even the sides of the cave were all covered by the tide of human-faced spideys!
“Holy Marvel Jesus! Did we enter a spider’s nest?!”
“Hell will I know! Damn! They’re gaining on us! Little missy, fire at will!”
“Eih!” Miss Archer didn’t need to be told twice! Thuum!
An arrow let loose and another arrow already got nocked into place right when the XP orbs exploded from a pouncing giant spider!
One shot, one kill! Even on the move, this petite Miss Highschooler didn’t miss! She was a true dead shot!
But there’s no time to flatter her! Both men did their best to chop their axes at the corrosive webs whizzing their way like water gun shots!
Too bad there was too much! Their axe heads almost got wrapped by a little cocoon but still couldn’t stop it all!
“Guardian of Light!”
Accompanying that shout, a barrier of light bloomed around them, stopping the corrosive webs in their tracks!
But nobody looked happy at all because everybody knew it won’t last!
Will this be their end?!
