Deviant Kings: Claimed by The Four Lycan Kings
Chapter 12: Is It a Prank or The Truth?Adeline’s pov~
"A beautiful lie," Zyran purred, his fingers suddenly reaching out to grip the fabric of my hood, pulling it back just enough to expose my face entirely to the green light. "But your little performance ends pretty soon. I’m going to watch your every move. The second you try to use Raven’s protection to access the council databases, or the moment you try to slip into Blake’s bed... I will personally strip that pretty little mask off your face and throw you to the wolves outside these gates."
He pulled away smoothly, picking up his glass and taking a final sip. The lethal malice instantly melted back into his signature, casual charm, making him look completely harmless once more.
"Now," Zyran smiled, his voice light and airy. "Since the executioner left the doors unlocked on his way out, I suggest you run back to Room 404 before I decide to report a stray wandering the restricted wing."
I didn’t wait for him to change his mind. I turned on my heel and walked out of the aisle, my heart pounding in my ears as I hurried toward the massive iron doors. As I pushed them open and stepped back into the main library, I could still hear Zyran’s soft, amused chuckle echoing in the dark behind me.
I bolted out of the Great Library, my heart slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird. The cold night air hit my face as I crossed the dark courtyard, but it did nothing to cool the adrenaline tearing through my veins.
Three of them. Three of the Four Kings had cornered me in less than twenty-four hours. Keiran was analyzing my instincts, Zyran was convinced I was a political spy, and Blake was watching the fallout like it was a game. Only Raven’s forged documents were keeping me alive—and that thread was fraying fast.
I practically threw myself into the East Tower, taking the stone steps two at a time until I reached Room 404. I slid the heavy iron key into the lock, turned it, and pushed the door open, desperate for a moment of safety.
The relief vanished before I could even close the door.
The hearth was roaring, casting long, flickering shadows across the room. Sitting cross-legged on her four-poster bed was Miya. She had discarded her silk robe and was now wearing a sleek, dark training outfit. A wicked, lethal-looking silver dagger was balanced perfectly on the tips of her fingers, flipping end-over-end with practiced, mesmerizing speed.
Catch. Flip. Catch.
Her sharp, feline eyes flicked up the moment I stepped inside. The slow, mocking smile stretched across her lips, and she let a suffocating wave of her highborn Alpha aura flood the room, intentionally making the air heavy.
"Look who finally decided to crawl back," Miya purred, catching the dagger by the hilt with a sharp smack. "Out past curfew on night one? And let me guess... you weren’t exactly studying in the public lounge."
I locked the door behind me, refusing to let my posture bend under the weight of her dominant aura. I kept my face deadpan, walking over to my bed to drop my duffel bag. "I was finishing the history assignment with Keiran."
As soon as the words left me, I instantly regretted the last two words. Shit.
The dagger froze in Miya’s hand.
The mocking amusement vanished from her face, replaced by a sharp, stunned rigidity. Her eyes narrowed to lethal slits as she scanned my plain hoodie, trying—and failing—to catch a scent that would explain what she was hearing.
"Keiran?" Miya repeated, her voice dropping its playful tone, turning into a low, dangerous warning. She slid off her bed, her movements fluid and silent as a cat, the silver blade held loosely at her side. "The executioner doesn’t do partners, Adeline. He doesn’t even talk to people outside the elite circle. What the hell are you playing at?"
"I’m not playing at anything," I said flatly, turning around to face her. I tucked my hands into my pockets, meeting her intense gaze without a single tremor. "For the project that Professor Ethan gave. I showed up. We did the work. That’s it."
Miya took a slow step closer, the scent of sharp jasmine and dominant ozone radiating off her. "You think you’re clever, don’t you? Slipping in here under the Dravenmoor seal, catching Blake’s eye in the courtyard, and now spending the night locked in the restricted wing with Keiran. You’re a stray with no pack, no lineage, and no scent. You’re a freak anomaly."
She raised the dagger, the firelight glinting off the polished silver as she pointed it directly at my chest.
"My father is a general, sweetie. I know exactly what happens to wild cards who try to infiltrate places they don’t belong. The elite packs are already talking. They think you’re a trap set by Raven to shift the power balance in the student council. If you fracture the alliance between the Four Kings, this entire academy will turn into a war zone."
I didn’t step back. I looked at the silver blade, then looked her dead in the eye. After facing the lethal glare of Keiran and the venomous accusations of Zyran tonight, a spoiled general’s daughter holding a knife felt incredibly small.
"If you’re going to use that, use it," I whispered, my voice a cold, unyielding wire. "Otherwise, put it away. I have a lecture at dawn, and I don’t have the energy for your jealousy."
Miya’s jaw clenched. The air in the room spiked with her volatile Alpha fury, demanding I submit, demanding I cower. But I remained a brick wall.
For a long, agonizing second, neither of us moved.
Then, Miya let out a sharp, breathless laugh, twirling the dagger smoothly before sliding it into a leather sheath at her thigh. "You’ve got a death wish, Adeline. I’ll give you that."
She walked back to her bed, throwing herself onto the mattress with a cold, dismissing glare. "Enjoy your sleep. Let’s see how long that straight spine lasts when the real wolves are allowed to draw blood."
She flicked the bedside lamp off, plunging our side of the room into absolute darkness, save for the dying embers of the hearth.
I climbed into my bed, pulling the heavy blankets to my chin, my eyes staring wide open at the stone ceiling. The rhythmic breathing of a sleeping Alpha across the room was the only sound cutting through the heavy silence of Room 404. I lay paralyzed beneath the blankets, my mind racing through every threat I got today..
Then, a sudden, sharp vibration rattled against my thigh.
I pulled my phone out from beneath the covers, the bright screen illuminating the darkness. It was a text from a completely blank, untraceable number.
Unknown number.
Unknown: I have what you want.
My body went entirely rigid. The breath caught completely in my throat, and the room seemed to spin. What I want. No one at this academy was supposed to know I was looking for anything. To the world, I was just a nameless charity case.
It should be just a prank; there is no way... but?
My fingers trembled violently as I hovered over the keyboard. I had to play it completely cool, masking the frantic adrenaline spiking in my chest. I typed out a quick, dismissive reply.
Adeline: What do you have? I want nothing.
I stared at the screen, my heart hammering a chaotic rhythm against my ribs. A minute passed. Then two. The phone buzzed again, the glowing text slicing through the dark.
Unknown: Don’t play games. I know why you really sneaked into this academy. If you want the truth, come out of the Royal Lycan Academy gates right now to get it. Alone.
