In Feng Yuan’s vision, indeed, there are entangled fates on Qi Chen and Dou Yanlan, but because of Feng Yuan’s own abilities, he can see much more than Gladys. This is also why he ignored the rather slender threads of fate on the two of them.
However, with Gladys’s reminder, Feng Yuan gradually noticed some clues. Looking at the sky, he squinted his eyes and said,
"Fate from beyond the world, moreover, directly related to them, how strange..."
Touching his chin, Feng Yuan was a bit surprised. If it were only Qi Chen, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but although Dou Yanlan’s kindred fate threads were not as strong as Qi Chen’s, they were very solid. What is going on here?
In the end, Feng Yuan couldn’t figure it out, so Gladys took out a deck of cards and said,
"Come on, try it, see if you can draw something strange."
Although it hasn’t been tried yet, with the previous card and Feng Yuan’s words, Gladys can almost confirm that in divining Qi Chen and the others, they would definitely pull out a bunch of bizarre things.
No way around it, when it involves things beyond this world, the Divination Cards become very strange. Gladys can’t help that; the only consolation is that the Divination Cards are still usable.
Qi Chen didn’t know what Gladys was thinking, but took it as an ordinary divination, casually drawing a card from the deck. Seeing the card change shape in his hand, Qi Chen stood there dumbfounded, staring at Gladys.
Feng Yuan sighed, not surprised by this. The previous card had already foretold this situation. However, the background pattern on this card was a bit eerie.
Standing next to Qi Chen, Feng Yuan couldn’t see what was on the face of the card. But the back, unlike the classic patterns on Gladys’s deck, was a strange design predominantly in gray smoke. The entire pattern was mostly gray smoke.
However, within the smoke was faintly discernible a silhouette—not really, that of a person in a long dress with clasped hands praying.
Though most of this figure was obscured by the smoke, Feng Yuan could barely discern its shape beneath the haze. Of course, details were impossible to make out; the smoke pattern’s cover, coupled with the card’s small size, made carving out so many details impractical.
The silhouette wasn’t solitary; the praying figure occupied the upper half, whereas the lower half mirrored the praying silhouette’s reflection, except this reflection held a weapon, not in prayer.
"What in the world is the meaning of this card?"
Qi Chen was about to hand the card to Gladys for interpretation when a black flame appeared out of nowhere, instantly consuming the card. Once the flame dissipated, the card returned to its original form.
"A reunion, with someone very important to you, will happen soon. This card should be just a medium without any significance."
Gladys took a glance at the card and replied offhandedly. In her view, what truly mattered was the previous pattern Qi Chen saw, yet she had no idea what that design actually was.
"No, the card I just saw wasn’t like this. What I saw was... a pair of... it should’ve been a pair of eyes, just, the left side sapphire blue, the right side dark red, with a backdrop... seemed like a mire?"
Qi Chen tried to articulate what he had seen earlier, but he felt it was somewhat inaccurate, nonetheless, the main pattern was conveyed clearly.
"Eyes? Heterochromatic? This... nothing in the Divination Cards offers any interpretative reference for something like this."
Looking towards Feng Yuan with a helpless expression, Gladys realized that this was beyond her ability, at least she didn’t know how to decode this peculiar pattern.
Guessing blindly wasn’t out of the question, but being an already nebulous outcome from divination, now mutated due to involving the main timeline’s outer reaches, speculation would merely lead them further from the true answer.
"An odd pattern, eyes, really can’t comprehend it."
Sighing, Feng Yuan wore a face of helplessness; this card face was genuinely impossible to decipher. Of course, he couldn’t shirk the feeling the omen wasn’t that simple.
The card back in divination decks generally bears simple textures, not because of the user’s preferences, though preferences do affect it, but mainly because Divination Cards require the aid of rules to undertake divination.
Back patterns correlate with rules themselves, hence the reason they are simple and texture-based, after all, natural laws won’t craft an artistically elegant design for you, that’s unrealistic.
However, dealing with divination beyond the main timeline appears to follow another path; at the very least, card backs aren’t solely rule textures, but instead contain additional information.
Just what these pieces of information imply, Feng Yuan couldn’t grasp at that moment, but... I hope it’s not too troublesome.
Thinking along these lines, Feng Yuan watched silently as Gladys attempted to gather clues using divination techniques. Unfortunately, aside from the back pattern depicting the praying figure in the mirror, every card drawn bore a different pattern.
The designs were too abstract to yield any explanations; moreover, as divination progressed, those card face designs seemed to grow even more twisted and abstract.
"For now, pause, don’t continue; don’t you think the Divination Cards might be under some strange influence?"
Feng Yuan couldn’t help but stop Gladys from continuing the divination, as the increasingly distorted patterns gave him a bad feeling.
After putting the cards back into the deck, Gladys regained her composure and said fearfully,
"You’re right! It seems... like a very special power."
Divination isn’t entirely risk-free, when special existences are involved, their power might extend through the divination process, causing unique backlash effects.
Those increasingly distorted card faces could be symptoms of backlash; however, being halted in time by Feng Yuan, Gladys felt there should be no problem.
"Able to counter divination, it’s indeed a special power."
Rubbing his chin, Feng Yuan said in amazement. Gladys’s reaction confirmed for him that those bizarre patterns had issues, nonetheless, determining the truth was really challenging.
"Sigh, looks like there’s nothing I can do to help you."
Sighing, Gladys observed the two, expressing helplessness. It wasn’t for lack of willingness to assist, even though divination had been suspended, she couldn’t be certain if the interference from the power had ceased.
If it remained, resuming divination might lead to trouble, which she didn’t wish to occur.
Feng Yuan didn’t think the power would dissipate quickly either, if it hadn’t, continuing with divination wouldn’t be good for Gladys.
"For now, that’s all we can do; though aware it’s an enemy from outside the main timeline, it feels somewhat useless."
Glancing at Qi Chen, Feng Yuan spoke speechlessly. Initially, he had hoped quite a bit from Gladys, given that the Mordan Clan held unique prophecies and divining skills.
Sadly, even their side couldn’t divine the truth behind this; what was certain was that their origins were probably significant, otherwise such changes wouldn’t manifest.
But, that doesn’t help much; both the Imperial Timeline and War Timeline have reasons to intervene, though merely a hunch, Feng Yuan felt the true mastermind behind it all wasn’t likely to be Yalmorde, or rather, Yalmorde’s motives seemed peculiar.
"Yalmorde’s blade is pursuing you and this timeline’s you? Why?"
Bai You approached War Qi Chen, but was turned away on grounds that his current predicament wasn’t favorable. Upon learning the reason, Bai You scrutinized War Qi Chen with a face that screamed disbelief.
"Because of that legend."
"Which legend?"
"The same being’s different individual’s ritual..."
Recounting the legend he knew, War Qi Chen thought that this might end the matter, but Bai You responded with words that stunned him.
"What kind of legend is this? Even if you’re fooling me, don’t make things up."
Crossing her arms, Bai You was slightly irate, what an unfounded ritual never heard of! And speaking of Yalmorde’s legendary ritual, War Qi Chen never managed any intelligence-related departments!
"Never heard of it?! How could that be, this legend is so famous, how could you not know?!"
Staring in disbelief at Bai You, War Qi Chen too began suspecting he was the one being misled.
"Famous?! If it’s truly famous, surely there are records? So you’re implying that during those three years as an archive manager, I did nothing?!"
"No! Impossible, I... check Yalmorde’s folklore, it should be documented in Volume Three."
War Qi Chen’s shocked statement left Bai You bewildered; after mulling it over, she stubbornly proposed,
"No! You’ll come back with me! Anyway, they don’t know you sneaked over, let’s go!"
