Chapter 2616 - 2617: Preparing for the Lantern Release

In a hurry to get to Liuyun Temple, Feng Yuan and his group bought some portable fast food from Data Square, planning to eat on the way. Qi Chen was puzzled, wondering why Feng Yuan didn’t settle his dinner at the dining area of the Liuyun Ceremony. Was it because the food there wasn’t good? But it seemed this fast food wasn’t much better either.

The question was only resolved when they arrived at the Changfu Road Intersection. Compared to daytime, the place was teeming with people at the moment, crowded everywhere, even though the people from Baiman City had already temporarily left; the number of people here hadn’t decreased but rather increased.

The Special Duty Team was busy maintaining order, but the large number of people meant they could barely ensure crowd control to prevent trampling accidents; beyond that, they couldn’t manage.

"There’re so many people, let’s eat here first before going in."

Just one glance at the crowd made Feng Yuan immediately give up on the idea of going in to reserve a spot first. It was impossible, with the current number of people; squeezing in wasn’t infeasible, but they wouldn’t be able to eat.

"So many people, doesn’t the city manage this?"

Qi Chen was also surprised by the vast sea of people; he hadn’t expected there’d be so many people waiting to enter. Dou Yanlan, having a thought, looked at Feng Yuan and asked,

"Should we apply to the Special Duty Team? Considering the current situation, there likely isn’t much space left by the riverside."

They were still at the Changfu Road Intersection, and the entire Changfu Road was already packed; she could easily imagine the riverside’s situation, and even if they squeezed in directly, they might not reach the riverside.

Seeking help from the Special Duty Team might be feasible; after all, there must be a designated area for the ceremony. With just a few of them, it should not cause too much inconvenience.

"Hmm, it seems possible, wait, let me make a call."

Feng Yuan, about to take out chopsticks and start eating, thought for a moment and said, joining the crowd by the riverside seemed inappropriate—not because Feng Yuan was worried about not getting in; he had ways to disrupt the crowd and force his way in, but it wasn’t fair to ordinary people.

In comparison, going through the Special Duty Team seemed better; at least it wouldn’t affect ordinary people.

Since the evening, Liao Yu and his team had been overwhelmed. It was because the departure of Baiman City’s people didn’t cause much impact; the real hassle came from the locals arriving.

They were all there for the evening’s Star Lamp, and Liao Yu and his team couldn’t directly persuade people away, at least as long as there was room by the riverside to stand.

With more people came all sorts of chaos; luckily, due to Liuyun Ceremony’s special status in Maomu City, there was no troublemaking; otherwise, it would be even more frustrating.

"Liao Yu, is your phone ringing?"

Ye Hanlei, amidst his busyness, vaguely seemed to hear Liao Yu’s phone ringing, reminding him since he was busy stopping people attempting to cut the line. Of course, she also thought she might have heard wrong; after all, who would have time to call him now?

Picking up the phone, Liao Yu was about to hang up casually but froze seeing the name displayed and hurriedly answered. After a moment, putting down the phone, he sighed and turned to Ye Hanlei, saying,

"I’m going to pick someone up."

"Pick someone up?"

Ye Hanlei looked at him puzzled. They didn’t seem to have any reception tasks, so who was he going to pick up?

"Feng Yuan and his group want to enter through our passage. I guess they got intimidated by the crowd."

"I see, I’ll report to the captain, you should head over quickly."

She wasn’t surprised by Feng Yuan’s choice, or rather, Feng Yuan asking for their help made her relieved; after all, that guy truly had the capability to forcibly push through the crowd.

Of course, doing so would surely cause issues, but going through their Special Duty Team’s passage was much more stable. Besides, the specially reserved area wouldn’t feel crowded due to a few extra people.

When Liao Yu found Feng Yuan and his group, they were still eating. After hesitating for a moment, Liao Yu let them finish their food before proceeding.

After all, the dedicated area wasn’t for ordinary people, and bringing fast food over seemed inappropriate.

The road to the riverside, even with Liao Yu using his Special Duty Team identity to open the way, couldn’t see much space made on these crowded streets. As a result, by the time Liao Yu took them to the spot, thirty-odd minutes had passed.

"There really are so many people."

Crossing the barrier and looking back at the crowded place behind him, Feng Yuan couldn’t help but sigh. Seeing Liao Yu bring strangers, the staff quickly came forward for questioning and, upon confirming Feng Yuan’s identity, didn’t prevent them from entering.

Although Feng Yuan hadn’t received an invitation, given Feng Yuan’s contributions to Maomu City, observing closely wasn’t a problem. If one were to strictly adhere to rules, he wouldn’t be placed here.

"Are you going back? Why not stay and watch the fun?"

Seeing Liao Yu turn to rejoin the crowd, Feng Yuan spontaneously suggested, to which Liao Yu glanced at him and helplessly replied,

"Better not, later will be the busiest time, one less person might lead to trouble."

"Uh...true."

Feng Yuan paused and realized; right now, it’s just about maintaining entry order, but later, when the riverside becomes too crowded, that’ll mark the beginning of the trouble. People arriving afterward will certainly want to enter, but by then, there’s no space at the riverside; although people will keep their tempers in check during the Liuyun Ceremony, in such an atmosphere, it’s quite hard not to have any incidents.

The commotion outside didn’t affect Feng Yuan; all those allowed to participate in the Star Lamp release were not ordinary people, hence the security in this venue was very strict. Without Feng Yuan’s contributions, he couldn’t have entered.

Remaining uninterested in those social interactions, Feng Yuan silently watched from the side.

"Seems much stricter now compared to the daytime ceremony."

Long Boduo curiously looked towards Feng Yuan and remarked. In contrast to the casualness during the day, everything now seemed far more formal, from the arrangement of offerings to the setup of the altar, all were much more elaborate.

"The Star Lamp is considered the most important part, I believe participants need prior practice to take part."

Rubbing his chin, Feng Yuan remarked, studying the so-called Star Lamps. Compared to Blessing Lamps, Star Lamps were larger, although both were lotus-shaped lamps, yet their central structures differed.

In the center of the Blessing Lamp’s flower is a place card, whereas in the Star Lamp’s center lies a Bright Light Candle, an intricately designed pale yellow candle, exuding a faint botanical fragrance up close.

A circle of small candles surrounds the Bright Light Candle; these shorter candles around the Bright Light Candle aren’t lit during the initial release. The wicks of these small candles are coated with special fuel.

Only when the Star Lamp rises to the sky and the Bright Light Candle burns out do these smaller candles start burning. Naturally, these small candles aren’t ordinary either. Like the Blessing Lamp, Star Lamps also naturally disassemble in the air without leaving debris.

And, there isn’t a place card; apart from being much larger in size, the Star Lamp differs from the Blessing Lamp with its surrounding hanging ribbons, which are inscribed with blessings instead, replacing the original place card for prayers.

"So, do you want to participate too?"

Veronia asked curiously, Feng Yuan rolled his eyes and replied irritably,

"Forget it, too many things to mind when releasing Star Lamps, not interested, just watching is enough."

Feng Yuan held no obsession with releasing lamps. If there were no rules, he might give it a try, but clearly that wasn’t possible. As the highlight of the Liuyun Ceremony, releasing the Star Lamps was the most intricate, and Feng Yuan wouldn’t seek such trouble.

Seeing their busyness, Feng Yuan inquired,

"By the way, will the people from Baiman City participate in the Liuyun Ceremony, including releasing Star Lamps?"

"They probably won’t; the Liuyun Ceremony is our local folk tradition. They likely aren’t that interested, and it doesn’t seem like there’s currently space for Baiman City participation either?"

Scanning the surroundings, Qi Chen uncertainly replied. The people from Baiman City coming to attend the Liuyun Ceremony was unexpected enough, let alone the possibility of them participating in the crucial Star Lamp release—this wasn’t something to take lightly.

Though daytime saw fewer attendees, by the time for releasing the Star Lamps, the number of people there exceeded daytime; under such circumstances, there probably isn’t a way for Baiman City participants.

"Who knows?"

Recalling the daytime anomaly, Feng Yuan smiled without explaining; it’s hard to say what others might be thinking.
