The night of the Liuyun Ceremony saw an unexpected throng of participants. Even Feng Yuan hadn’t anticipated that besides the riverbanks, the surface of the river was also crowded with people. Although Maomu City had locked down the waters near Liuyun Temple, a large crowd still gathered outside the blockade, riding water-walking Spirit Beasts as if on land, just to witness the upcoming star lantern release with their own eyes.
With more than ten minutes remaining until the star lamps were released, not only was the river surface crowded, but the unblocked areas across the river were also filled with people. Observing this lively scene, Feng Yuan remarked in surprise,
"There’s really a lot of people. Haven’t they planned any measures to divert the crowd?"
"The star lamps can only be released at fixed times. Although it looks like there are many people, compared to the permanent residents of our city..."
Dou Yanlan said casually. Although it was still wartime, this number of people wasn’t too surprising. Despite the crowd gathered here, it might not even outnumber all the Beastmasters responsible for patrols and security tasks in Maomu City.
The current situation arose simply due to the fixed timing of the star lamps, even if only a small portion came to see it, the whole area around Liuyun Temple would still be crowded.
"Tsk, I thought I was the only one so idle to come here."
With a slight pout, Feng Yuan crossed his arms and turned away, while Veronia chuckled lightly and said,
"You don’t seem so idle yourself."
Although Feng Yuan didn’t need to patrol, nor did he join the city defense team, he hadn’t been idle either, even busier than others, as others only patrolled based on shifts, while Feng Yuan had been dealing with all sorts of miscellaneous matters constantly.
"Ahahaha... seems like it..."
Scratching his head, Feng Yuan appeared guilty, seemingly not having much downtime at all.
"Let’s hope nothing unusual happens next."
With a sigh, Feng Yuan looked helpless. Even though he didn’t want to get involved, if chaos troubled nearby people’s safety, he’d have no choice but to handle it.
"It’s hard to say."
Suppressing her laughter, Veronia said. With the war ongoing, the likelihood of Feng Yuan enjoying downtime was low, especially since the effects of the Qi Realm hadn’t settled yet.
The ceremony began, and Feng Yuan and the others ceased chatting, watching the intricate ritual in silence. Compared to the daytime casualness, it appeared much more formal. From eulogies to divine dances and then to farewells, and finally the release of the lamps, the entire process took over forty minutes. Even Feng Yuan was surprised by the lengthy ceremony.
One by one, the star lamps were lit, and as people holding a lamp each headed to the platform allowing the star lamps to float away, Qi Chen felt a sudden urge, a determination to strive hard! At least... to qualify for releasing a lamp!
Among those qualified to release lamps, Feng Yuan didn’t know many. Most of the academy’s teachers were too busy to attend, and not all were locals of Maomu City, therefore not placing special importance on the Liuyun Ceremony.
Liao Yu and the others, due to qualification issues, despite being part of the Special Duty Team, did not have the qualification to release a lamp. For the Special Duty Team, at least team captains barely had the eligibility to apply.
Meng Binglan naturally qualified. Despite hardly leaving her research lab during the war, her contributions were well recognized; although perhaps not game-changing, they played a crucial role in stabilizing Maomu City.
However, like the academy teachers, Meng Binglan had little interest in the star lamps. At least for now, she had more urgent matters, as research on the Qi Realm was pressing since it could potentially impact the combat power of the United Army.
One by one, star lamps drifted upward, illuminating the night sky with glowing points. The dense Netherworld Mist cloaked the vast starry sky but was brightened by these lamps, creating another Star River.
Feng Yuan initially thought that Long Boduo not taking further action meant no anomalies would occur, but unexpectedly, during the latter half of the lamp release, light gray mist began roiling in the sky. As the ceremony neared its end, phantom silhouettes emerged from the dense fog.
"What is this..."
Feng Yuan looked up, puzzled at the silhouettes in the sky. Though they glowed faintly, in his perception, there were no signs of Spiritual Bodies in that area, meaning they weren’t even Spiritual Bodies but rather unique energy conglomerates.
"Strange indeed, similar phenomena... yet distinct characteristics."
Veronia mused, looking questioningly at Long Boduo, who hurriedly clarified,
"I did nothing, as you can see. I even disabled the channel set during the day. This has nothing to do with me."
"A variant of heart-controlling spirit."
Elwick, who had silently accompanied the group, suddenly spoke at this moment. Compared to Long Boduo, Elwick, though human-like in form, appeared unremarkable, often ignored unconsciously.
Feng Yuan wondered if this was a special ability of Elwick. Hearing him speak, Feng Yuan glanced over and said,
"Is this an ultimate move too?"
"Heart-controlling spirit isn’t confined to ultimate moves. Everything possesses spirit, unrestricted by specific entities. It’s just... what comes to mind, manifesting illusory gods, mixed in merits."
Staring at the silhouettes, Elwick stated indifferently. Dou Yanlan, seemingly remembering something, said,
"Illusory gods? Could it be... those legendary gods?"
In the Dynasty Era, when Spirit Beasts had yet to integrate into ordinary life, humanity conjured various deities through imagination and created a complete set of god-worship rituals.
Even the Liuyun Ceremony stemmed from this tradition, but as Spirit Beasts became part of everyday life, past worshiped deities had turned into mere cultural symbols, possibly serving as a conduit for grief during certain occasions.
This was why Dou Yanlan and Qi Chen hadn’t immediately associated the figures with Maomu City’s legendary gods. In modern times, no one believes in them, so they wouldn’t consider it. If Elwick hadn’t mentioned it, Dou Yanlan wouldn’t have thought of this possibility.
With this conclusion, Dou Yanlan and Qi Chen found the phantoms resembled local mythical deities.
"Hey, Feng Yuan, they aren’t actually going to manifest the gods, are they?"
Concerned about a possibility, Qi Chen asked Feng Yuan. Looking at Qi Chen, Feng Yuan shook his head, saying,
"They shouldn’t. No matter what gods you refer to, they are fictional entities. Turning fiction into reality or becoming a god is no simple task, or one could say, it’s akin to artificially creating gods, which is almost impossible without intent."
Creating artificial gods is not unfeasible, but inadvertently achieving it would be extremely difficult in Feng Yuan’s view, and the Liuyun Ceremony evidently lacks this potential.
However, the divine silhouettes above wouldn’t change due to Feng Yuan’s assumptions. As they moved, the initially quiet crowd grew restless.
No choice, for everyone recognized the divine silhouettes overhead, particularly noticing their benevolent-seeming movements aimed at bestowing blessings.
Yet, some doubted these legendary local deities’ existence, viewing those blessing gestures suspiciously, as if they meant harm.
Others had unwavering trust, believing the gods wouldn’t hurt them.
Some preferred caution; blessings may descend in waves, so waiting to see if others tried first seemed wiser.
The differing viewpoints, alongside the tightly packed crowd on the banks, made chaos inevitable. As a crisis loomed, those releasing lamps deployed their Beast Tamer creatures to speak up.
As for the divine silhouettes above?
Whether friend or foe, there was no time to worry about them, for if not caused by their appearance, this crisis wouldn’t have occurred.
Indeed, both Feng Yuan and Qi Chen knew well that failing to manage this unrest would lead to a stamping disaster.
This urgency led them to release the Beast Tamer creatures early, despite the ceremony’s final concluding segments left unfinished, to try controlling the situation.
"Truly... never mind, let me help them. Let me see..."
Casually summoning the Ancient Black Book, Feng Yuan was about to act when Elwick suddenly raised a hand. A chill swept through everyone’s hearts, dispelling all impulses and ideas in an instant. Warily glancing at the divine figures in the sky, many mistakenly assumed this change was their doing.
