"Jason Lockwood, hurry up and call the police! Didn’t you hear the little girl say this man is a bad guy? I’m sure of it—he’s a child trafficker pretending to be a delivery man!"

She absolutely didn’t trust the man in front of her, but she couldn’t completely ignore Jason Lockwood’s words. So, with a frown, she had no choice but to hand Rory over.

But the moment the man touched her, Rory panicked and clung to Jasmine’s neck, wailing, "Don’t! Go away! You go away, you bad man! I’m not your daughter! I have a daddy, I have a daddy!"

"Why don’t you go back for now," Jason Lockwood said. "Since the child is afraid of you, wait for her to calm down, and then you can come get her." He saw the woman’s furrowed brow and wary expression and knew she didn’t believe a word they were saying.

"Yes, that’s fine too. I’ll have to trouble you both to take care of my daughter, then." The man sighed in relief upon hearing the Baron’s words.

"Mm."

After the man left, Rory’s crying slowly subsided, but she remained nestled in Jasmine Warren’s arms, sobbing quietly.

Jasmine’s heart ached for the little girl. "Don’t be afraid anymore. The bad man is gone now."

"Mm-hmm..." Rory lifted her head. Her eyes were red as she cast a fearful glance in Jason Lockwood’s direction before turning back to Jasmine Warren and nodding.

"That man just now, he wasn’t your daddy?"

"No."

"Is he your stepdad, then?"

"..." Rory looked at Jasmine Warren, her expression completely bewildered.

Seeing Rory’s reaction, Jasmine Warren assumed it was a silent admission. Just as she was about to ask another question, a cold voice drifted from inside the room. "That’s right. He’s the stepdad."

"..." The moment she heard Jason Lockwood’s voice, Rory was so frightened she buried her face against Jasmine Warren and clung to her, not daring to even lift her head.
