Jason Lockwood pulled a hand from his pocket, aimed it at Archie Lockwood’s back, and commanded coldly, "Stand still!"
Howard Rhodes immediately spotted the small pistol in Jason Lockwood’s hand. He quickly aimed his own weapon at Jason and said sharply, "Boss, he’s got a gun!"
Before Archie Lockwood could turn around, Jason Lockwood spoke. "You’ve seen Rory. Now, where’s the information I asked for?"
"Louise Jordan, give him the files!"
"Yes, sir," Louise Jordan replied coldly. Keeping her gun raised with one hand, she offered the files to Jason Lockwood with the other. She seemed to be deliberately slowing her pace, as if waiting for her boss to have his daughter back in his arms.
Archie Lockwood had only taken a couple of steps when his phone vibrated twice in his pocket. He felt it, and a faint smile touched his lips as he strode toward the man holding Rory. At the same time, Louise Jordan arrived in front of Jason Lockwood.
Jason Lockwood took the files, opened the folder, and began to look through the contents. As he did, he conspicuously took two steps back.
After confirming the contents of the files were correct, he gave a wave of his hand, and Archie Lockwood took Rory.
"Daddy! Daddy, boo-hoo..." Rory had been sobbing uncontrollably ever since she saw her father arrive. Now, safe in Archie Lockwood’s arms, all she could do was hiccup through her tears.
Archie Lockwood patted Rory’s shoulder, comforting her in a low voice. "Shh, it’s okay, Rory. It’s okay now. It’s all Daddy’s fault for not protecting you. I swear, this is the last time. No one will ever lay a hand on you again." He practically growled the last sentence through gritted teeth.
He carried Rory back to Howard Rhodes and the others, glaring at Jason Lockwood, who had finished examining the files and was still smirking. "If anything happens to the old man," Archie said angrily, "I will make you pay."
"Hah. Don’t worry. The old man is my father, too. How could I possibly let anything happen to him?"
Only after Archie Lockwood had gone did Jason Lockwood wave his men away.
But he had barely finished speaking when he saw a woman standing at the top of the stairs. She was staring at him with a look of both horror and disbelief. The way her eyes were fixed on him made his heart give a violent shudder.
He had no idea how long she had been standing there, or how much she had heard. He, a man who never felt the need to hide his true self from anyone, was suddenly afraid.
He didn’t move toward her, because he saw she was already walking toward him.
With every step she took, his grip on the small pistol in his hand tightened.
"Didn’t you say Rory was his daughter?" Jasmine Warren demanded as she walked right up to Jason Lockwood, her eyes boring into his.
The hand Jason Lockwood had hanging at his side relaxed slightly. His expression was indifferent, and he spoke with an air of nonchalance. "Is that really so important?"
"Answer me. Didn’t you say Rory was his daughter?"
"I don’t want to discuss this anymore. We’re going back." As he spoke, Jason Lockwood reached for Jasmine Warren’s hand.
Jasmine Warren dodged his hand, her eyes red with anger. "Did you kidnap a child? Did you do something you shouldn’t have?" Although she had a sinking feeling she already knew the answer, she still needed to hear him say it himself.
