Chapter 584: Chapter 582: Anyone Can

After calming Kiki down, Mika Summers handed Kiki over to Tristan Grayson and returned to the bedroom alone.

She pulled out her phone and called Jasmine.

The call connected on the second try, but once it did, both sides were silent.

Mika didn’t speak first, and Jasmine was quiet as well.

After what felt like a long time, Jasmine seemed to grow impatient. Her cold voice shattered Mika’s thoughts. "What do you want? If you’re not going to say anything, I’m hanging up."

"I saw your wedding gift." Hearing that familiar yet strange voice, Mika gave a faint, bitter smile and spoke calmly.

After she spoke, silence fell on the other end of the line once again. A long moment passed before a cold voice replied, "Oh? And? Are you surprised?"

"Yes, very surprised." Mika walked to the edge of the bed and sat down, forcing a casual smile as she continued, "It’s a good thing you told me. Otherwise, I’d still be in the dark. Jasmine, you really are a good friend."

"Mika, you might not be able to accept it right away, but you need to think clearly. Do you really want to get hurt again? I’m only telling you this because I consider you a friend."

"If you knew all along, why did you have to give it to me on my wedding day?" ’Just as Tristan said, was she doing this with ulterior motives or ill intent?’

Even though she didn’t want to think of Jasmine that way, everything was telling her one thing: Jasmine had changed.

"I only found out recently myself."

"Is that so? You only just found out? So when I saw you yesterday, you had no intention of telling me the truth. Instead, you just casually told me to remember to check when I got home..."

Jasmine Warren never had a good temper, and Mika’s few words were enough to make her explode. "Mika, I know you can’t accept reality right now, but this is reality! Tristan Grayson only married you because you look like Maggie Monroe! And Maggie died because of you! Mika, do you think he would genuinely want to marry the person who caused the death of the woman he loved most? You’re with Tristan every day. Do you think he sees you as Maggie, or as Mika?"

"Enough! Jasmine Warren, anyone could have warned me like this, anyone at all, but not you!! You’re my best friend! Why would you tell me this? Why would you choose now to tell me?"

"Mika, I’m warning you because I see you as a friend! If you don’t believe me, you can investigate it yourself. When Tristan Grayson chose you, he must have had a photo of you. Otherwise, with so many women in the world, why would he choose only you? Have you never wondered why?"

"—" ’A photo? A photo?’ Jasmine’s words made Mika’s face turn deathly pale.

She had no way to refute those words.

Because she had seen the photo...

Without waiting for a reply, Jasmine Warren continued in her cold voice, "Back when I was handling Maggie’s case, the first time I saw her, I thought there was a part of her that looked just like you. Tristan must have felt the same way. Mika, you’ve been used and deceived for so many years. Are you still going to refuse to see the truth? If you don’t believe me, then there’s no need for us to be friends anymore. It’s truly chilling to think that after all the years we’ve known each other, our friendship can’t hold a candle to Tristan Grayson, to just a few words from him."

With every word from Jasmine, Mika’s heart sank a little lower. In the end, it grew so heavy she didn’t have the strength to speak. She hung up the phone, and her body fell backward onto the bed.

’Between her and Tristan, no matter what, they could never escape Maggie.’

’Whether she was dead or alive.’

’Perhaps this was heaven’s punishment for causing Maggie’s death.’

’That’s why it was only now revealing to her that Tristan had approached her from the very beginning because she looked like Maggie, because he wanted her to be Maggie’s substitute.’

She closed her eyes, tears streaming from the corners, her mind replaying the scenes from the day Maggie died on the rooftop.

Maggie had dragged her, pinned her down, and forced her to look at the screen of a phone, telling her that she, Mika Summers, was nothing more than a pathetic, pitiful substitute.

’She was Maggie’s substitute, a substitute she could never escape in this lifetime...’

Tristan Grayson leaned against the wall, staring at the bedroom door. He held the items Jasmine Warren had sent, his gaze so cold it was chilling.

He didn’t know what Mika had discussed on the phone inside the room, but he had heard her shout, ’Enough! Jasmine Warren, anyone could have warned me like this, anyone at all, but not you!! You’re my best friend! Why would you tell me this? Why would you choose now to tell me?’

’Why would someone she considered her best friend choose to say such things at a time like this?’

’Jasmine Warren? Jasmine Warren? From what Mika said yesterday, it sounds like she’s been caught up in a lawsuit and even lost her job recently.’

’I have to investigate this thoroughly. I absolutely cannot let a malicious woman like her get close to Mika!’

At that thought, Tristan Grayson pulled his phone from his pocket and headed downstairs, calling Ian Shaw as he walked.

Mika must have been exhausted. She had only meant to lie on the bed for a moment, but she ended up falling asleep.

She hadn’t had a nightmare in a long time, but tonight she had one. She dreamed of the day Maggie died, and she dreamed of Tristan choking her, his eyes full of hatred as they stared at her, a look that seemed to want to devour her whole.

Finally, the nightmare startled her awake. When she woke, the room was pitch black, and her heart was still pounding in a frantic panic.

Drenched in a cold sweat, she fumbled on the bed for a moment before finding her phone. She turned on the screen, got out of bed, and switched on the lights. It was only when she saw the photo of their family of three hanging on the wall that she felt she had returned to reality.

She went to the bathroom, quickly rinsed off, changed her clothes, and then opened the bedroom door to go out.

After leaving the bedroom, she heard Kiki’s laughter and the sound of the television from downstairs.

The people downstairs must have heard her moving around, because the volume of the TV lowered. Tristan turned his head to look up at the second floor, and as she reached the top of the stairs, her eyes met his.

In his eyes, there was none of the terrifying look she had seen in her dream. Instead, she saw concern and a flicker of some complex emotion she couldn’t decipher.

’I locked myself in the bedroom all afternoon. He must have been worried sick...’
