Chapter 620: Chapter 616: It Might Be for the Best

At that moment, Ian Shaw finally understood why that ambulance had arrived so quickly. He clenched his fists, pushed through the crowd, and strode to the woman sitting on the floor. He knelt, his eyes red, and said in a furious voice, "The ambulance isn’t coming."

"Mr. Shaw, please, you have to save Miss Joyce!" The waitress clearly recognized Ian Shaw. Her voice trembled as she pleaded.

Ian Shaw said nothing more. He simply took Aria Joyce from the other woman’s arms. Holding the woman, who had been unconscious for who knew how long, he walked unsteadily toward the elevator. Several waitresses hurried to follow him inside.

Ian Shaw looked at the crowd of people. Suppressing the tremor in his heart, he said coldly, "Two of you, come with me to take Miss Joyce to the hospital. The rest of you, figure out how to notify the Joyce Family immediately."

"Okay." Now, everyone seemed to have found their backbone. They nodded, and two of the women followed him into the elevator while the remaining waitresses ran for the stairs.

Ian Shaw gazed at the lifeless-looking woman in his arms, unable to describe his feelings. ’When I saw Jasmine Warren after her car crash, I was in disbelief, shocked, but I didn’t feel a thing. Not a single stir of pity. I even felt she got what she deserved. But when I saw Aria Joyce lying so quietly in that waitress’s arms, my heart filled with panic and fear. I don’t know what I’m panicking about, but I know one thing clearly: I’m afraid she’ll die.’

’If she died just like this, what would I do?’

’Yes, I suddenly need to ask myself that. If she died, what would I do?’

He lowered his head and bit down on her thin lips. They were ice-cold, without any warmth...

’No warmth.’ The thought startled Ian Shaw. His brow furrowed tightly as he snarled threats at the woman in his arms, "Aria Joyce! You hold on! If you dare to die, do you know what I’ll do? Don’t you forget what I have of yours!!"

"Aria Joyce! I swear, I’ll destroy your reputation! Even if you’re dead, I’ll make sure the whole world knows what kind of woman you, Aria Joyce, really are!"

"Aria Joyce! If you’ve got any guts, you’ll wake up! If you’ve got any guts, you won’t die! Otherwise, I will not let you go!"

...The elevator doors opened. The woman in his arms still hadn’t registered his threats; they had no effect at all.

’Aria Joyce, who always cared so much about her reputation, isn’t responding to me?’

The two women following closely behind Ian Shaw clung to each other and started to cry.

Although they weren’t particularly close with Miss Joyce and had said their fair share of bad things about her, at this moment, seeing her lying so lifelessly in Ian Shaw’s arms, they both wept.

Ian Shaw ran outside, all the while holding the woman and threatening her nonstop. "Aria Joyce! I will absolutely make you regret dying!"

"Aria Joyce! I’ll plaster those risqué photos of yours all over Tridell! Then you, Aria Joyce, will finally be famous! Everyone will know what kind of woman you are..."

As he was running and threatening her, he didn’t notice that the woman had, at some point, opened her eyes. She weakly tilted her head up. "You... you dare..."

Her voice sent a sharp tremor through his heart. A strange emotion flooded his entire being. Without breaking his stride, he looked down at the woman in his arms, a roguish smile playing on his lips. "If you dare to die, then I dare to do it!"

She hated this man to the bone, and yet, in this single instant, she found herself mesmerized by his smile. ’To think that this man is the last one I’ll see in my life, and the only man I’ve ever been with...’ A wave of bitterness washed over her heart.

She had loved Tristan Grayson for so many years, never imagining that this same love would lead her to her current fate.

After a long, long time, she felt her vision starting to go black. The pain in her body seemed to fade, and her head felt heavy, ready to loll downward. But she used every last ounce of her strength to raise a hand and grip Ian Shaw’s collar. "I-Ian... Ian Shaw... I... I hate you... I won’t let you go, even in death..."

"Alright then. Don’t let me go, even in death." The woman’s weak words were hardly a threat, but they made him stop in his tracks. A jolt went through him. His handsome brows slowly relaxed, and the corner of his mouth curved into a devilish smile as he replied.

A faint smile appeared on Aria Joyce’s pale face. Her head tilted to one side, into Ian Shaw’s chest, and she drifted off...

’Maybe... this is for the best...’

’After all, I was never going to be able to marry the man I love. Dying might be for the best...’

"Mr. Shaw, why did you stop walking?" the two women behind him urged, seeing him standing still.

Ian Shaw knelt down, still holding the woman.

Seeing this, how could they not understand what had happened? Still, they didn’t want to give up on that last chance. Perhaps there would be a miracle. "Mr. Shaw, Miss Joyce is so young! She can’t be dead! We’re begging you, please, you have to get her to the hospital!"

Ian Shaw couldn’t hear anyone speaking. A loud ringing filled his head.

He didn’t know what happened after that, or who finally took the woman from his arms.

He only knew that when he woke up the next day, his body was covered in injuries, wrapped up like a mummy.

Tristan told him that after he left the courthouse, he got a call from the hospital saying Ian had been beaten and severely injured.

Tristan had asked who beat him up, wanting to get revenge for him.

In truth, he didn’t know who had beaten him either. The moment Aria Joyce closed her eyes and left him, he only remembered the world going dark. His mind was a chaotic mess; he couldn’t remember or see anything.

He had lost consciousness...

When Tristan saw that Ian knew nothing, he could only shake his head and leave.

Outside the hospital room, he saw Mika Summers sitting dazedly on a chair in the hallway. He walked over, put his arm around her, and comforted her in a low voice, "Don’t overthink what happened to Aria Joyce. It has nothing to do with us."

Mika Summers suddenly snapped back to reality. She looked up, tears streaming down her face. "If we hadn’t pushed for Jason Lockwood’s trial to be moved up, Jasmine wouldn’t have been so overwhelmed that she had a breakdown. If Jasmine hadn’t had that breakdown, Aria Joyce wouldn’t have died. And if nothing had happened to Aria, Jasmine wouldn’t have been in that car accident! Tristan, I really feel like I’m a jinx. All I ever do is drag everyone down and get them hurt."

"How can you take all the blame? None of this has anything to do with you. It’s my fault. It’s all my fault."
