Done Breeding: Now I Rule the Beastworld

Chapter 121 - 120: Siding with Kin, Not Reason

Chu Liangyu sensed the delicate atmosphere between the two. With a light cough, she quickly said, "Don’t worry about it for now. After this competition is over, I’ll teach you myself."

"My own cubs will be learning alongside you then, so you’d better study hard. It’ll be embarrassing if you can’t even keep up with them."

Hearing something that piqued her interest, Feng Qingqing’s attention shifted from the earlier incident. "Of course. As a grown female, there’s no way I’d lose to a bunch of cubs."

"I wouldn’t be so sure."

Xiong Jiaojiao crossed her arms, adding the remark just as Feng Qingqing’s confident declaration ended.

Feng Qingqing was instantly furious. She felt this female was deliberately trying to undermine her. "What is your problem? Why do you have to interfere with everything I do and say such discouraging things!"

Back in her own tribe, Feng Qingqing had been treasured by her Beast Father and Beast Mother, held in the palms of their hands. Even her siblings had doted on her. Ever since leaving her tribe, she had faced one frustration after another.

If it weren’t for her own goals, she would have erupted long ago. She certainly wouldn’t still be here.

Xiong Jiaojiao’s constantly provocative attitude, whether intentional or not, was the final straw. Feng Qingqing decided she wasn’t going to tolerate it anymore. After all, their clan’s leader still needed something from her—that was the reason she dared to voice her displeasure so directly.

"What do you mean I’m deliberately interfering? I’m just speaking the truth. You’re the one who’s being petty."

"And for the record, I don’t like you."

She had seen with her own eyes when Feng Qingqing tried to seduce Sister Liangyu’s Beast Husband. Even though Feng Qingqing had now sworn an oath to the Beast God that it wouldn’t happen again, Jiaojiao still found her to be an incredibly detestable person.

"You! You!"

Furious, Feng Qingqing pointed a finger at Xiong Jiaojiao’s nose, yet she was so choked with anger she couldn’t utter a single word of rebuttal. Worse, no one around would speak up for her, making her feel completely isolated.

The rims of her eyes reddened, but she fought back the urge to cry, swallowing her grievances. Her voice was choked with emotion when she spoke. "Who do you think you are? I couldn’t care less if you like me!"

"And another thing! Who says I can’t do better than the cubs? Just wait until I’ve learned. I’ll prove you wrong!"

Xiong Jiaojiao registered the fierce glare in the other woman’s eyes and unnaturally lowered her own gaze. ’This is the first time I’ve ever been so openly hostile and malicious,’ she thought. ’I wonder if Sister Liangyu will think I’m being shameless.’

Like a child who had misbehaved, she cautiously glanced at Chu Liangyu’s expression, not daring to look for too long, afraid she would see a look of blame and disapproval.

Chu Liangyu hadn’t expected things to escalate like this. But when it came down to it, you treat your own people differently. She was, ultimately, on Xiong Jiaojiao’s side.

However, Feng Qingqing was her partner, after all, so she couldn’t be too obviously biased. "Jiaojiao is just... well, her bark is worse than her bite," she said. "She doesn’t mean any harm, so please don’t overthink it."

"It’s getting dark, and there’s only one match left before the competition ends for the day. You look tired. It would be best for you to head back and get some rest."

Feng Qingqing’s lips pressed into a thin line. Watching Chu Liangyu defend her own person, she felt an indescribable pang in her heart.

It reminded her of her family. ’I want to go home,’ she thought. But she still had things she needed to do.

Her gaze swept over the two of them, and without saying anything else that might stir up trouble, she simply said, "Alright. I’ll head back now."

The competition was scheduled to last four days. If she wanted to watch more, there was still plenty of time. There was no need to rush.

"Alright, she’s gone. You can stop staring now." Chu Liangyu’s voice softened, her expression holding not a single trace of blame for Jiaojiao’s rashness.

Xiong Jiaojiao’s eyes sparkled. She suddenly threw her arms around Chu Liangyu’s neck. Since what she had been worried about hadn’t happened, her mood lightened considerably. A laugh escaped her, as clear and pleasant as silver bells. "Sister Liangyu, you’re the best!"

Chu Liangyu understood then. Xiong Jiaojiao was jealous, upset that Feng Qingqing was getting close to her.

’It’s not that she has any real malice,’ Chu Liangyu mused. ’It’s nothing more than childish possessiveness.’

"How long have I even known her? Of course I’m on your side."

Chu Liangyu patted her arm with a sigh, her words like those used to comfort a small cub.

Having not walked far, Feng Qingqing glanced back on impulse and saw the two of them. For some reason, a feeling of indignation welled up inside her.

’And she calls herself a clan leader! Siding with her own and ignoring all reason!’

’She’s nothing like my Beast Mother, who is always fair. It doesn’t matter if it’s one of her own cubs—if they make a mistake, they face the same punishment as anyone else in the clan. Not like her...’

She turned her head away in a huff, the slight curve of her lips flattening. Perhaps she didn’t even notice it herself, but for a brief moment, a flicker of loneliness crossed her eyes.

’Though I don’t want to admit it,’ she thought, ’I can’t lie to my own heart. I’m actually a little envious.’

"Sister Liangyu, I have some good news for you."

Xiong Jiaojiao let go of Chu Liangyu, her tone suddenly conspiratorial.

"Want to guess what it is?"

Chu Liangyu thought for a moment before venturing, "Have you made progress on that thing I asked you to look into?"

Seeing the disappointed look on Xiong Jiaojiao’s face after she said this, Chu Liangyu knew she’d guessed correctly.

"Honestly, nothing ever gets past you, Sister Liangyu."

Chu Liangyu rolled her eyes at her and urged, "Alright, stop dragging it out. Hurry up and tell me what’s going on."

Xiong Jiaojiao had just opened her mouth to speak when Chu Liangyu suddenly covered it with her hand. "Too many eyes and ears here. Let’s talk somewhere else."

Xiong Jiaojiao nodded, following behind Chu Liangyu to a secluded corner.

"Alright, go ahead."

"Here’s the thing, Sister Liangyu. You gave us three tasks, right? First, to figure out what effect that poison has on us. Second, to cultivate the Hundred Poison Immune Grass. And last, to replicate the scented powder in that pouch."

"We’ve successfully cultivated the Hundred Poison Immune Grass. If we take it today, it should purge the poison from our systems."

Chu Liangyu was surprised. She hadn’t expected them to be so fast, but then she remembered this was a matter of life and death for them. They couldn’t afford to be slow.

"What about the other two tasks?"

Xiong Jiaojiao’s expression suddenly darkened, a trace of fear in her eyes. "It’s a good thing we found out when we did," she said. "Otherwise, we would’ve been finished."

"We were definitely poisoned from eating the Strengthening Essence Grass, but the poison only takes full effect after the third dose. At that point, a Poison Vine would have taken root in our hearts, and we would have become puppets, forced to obey the holder of the mother vine."

Chu Liangyu drew in a sharp breath. She thought about how close they had come—Xiong Jiaojiao and the other members of the Wood Spirit Clan were nearly turned into Jiang Li’s puppets. ’Thank goodness that’s all in the past now,’ she thought.

’But what I don’t understand is, where did Jiang Li get these methods for dealing with the Wood Spirit Clan? It’s as if he knows the clan inside and out.’

’Could it be... he has members of the Wood Spirit Clan in his own ranks, working for him?’
