The man had a look of mock pity on his face. He glanced at the longsword in his hand, blew on the blade, and then turned his gaze to Chu Liangyu. "Surprised?"
Killing intent radiated from Chu Liangyu. Her thin lips parted. "To think a loser like you dares to show his face again. Commendable courage."
It was one against two. The odds were not in her favor.
The two didn’t look alike, but they were indeed twin brothers. Fighting them was like fighting two perfectly mirrored opponents; their coordination was flawless.
While her fight was a heated affair, things were not much different back at the Xihe Tribe.
----
"If it weren’t for us male Beastmen protecting you, how could you live so comfortably in this dangerous Beast World?"
"You people are truly clueless."
The words from the opposing side were merciless, but the gathered females looked back at them, all traces of their former timidity and compliance gone.
"Easy for you to say. How would you like it if you were ’protected’ like this?"
"If the Beast God hadn’t been so biased and denied us the ability of Beastification, we would be every bit as strong as you."
"Even now, we’re confident we can take you on."
The males roared with laughter. "You learn a few flashy moves and suddenly you’re this arrogant? It’s utterly ridiculous!"
They had heard insults far more humiliating than this countless times. In the past, they could only endure it in silence, but this time, they might actually be able to fight back.
When Xiong Jiaojiao arrived, she was met with a scene of utter chaos. The tribe’s cubs stood off to the side, watching blankly.
There was no one around she could ask to find out what had just happened. At that very moment, the cry of an unknown bird echoed from the sky above the tribe.
They watched the Beastmen brawling on the ground as if it were a farce, momentarily forgetting the purpose of their visit.
"Well this is a rare sight. The females are actually fighting the male Beastmen. And it looks like..."
"...they’re actually holding their own."
The two speakers exchanged a glance. One nudged the other and said, "How do you think those females are managing that?"
The other man shot him a look. "How should I know?"
"Alright, quiet down!" A black bird-like Beastman, a full size larger than the others, swept his gaze around. "Let’s focus on today’s mission."
At his command, the avian Beastmen attacked the people below. The first to suffer were the cubs, who were standing off to the side, completely unguarded.
Some of the cubs who had learned a bit of the Taiyin Fist were able to put up some resistance, and at the same time, Xiong Jiaojiao’s vines shot out, dragging them to safety.
Once all the cubs were brought to a safe place, Xiong Jiaojiao sent out a multitude of vines to block the overhead assault, all while shouting at the still-brawling factions: "I don’t care why you’re at each other’s throats! Deal with the invaders first, or our entire tribe will be annihilated!"
Her string of shouts finally made them calm down.
"Why are these people attacking our tribe for no reason?"
The sounds of battle raged on, and amidst the chaos, some wondered about the intentions of the avian Beastmen above.
"Worry about that if you’re still alive to care."
Amidst the chaos of the crowd, Feng Qingqing hid in a corner, watching with cold indifference.
Xiang Qiancheng was at her side, his eyes filled with an internal struggle.
He knew he should be out there helping, but he found himself unable to refuse this female’s plea for him to stay and protect her.
’This isn’t what I truly want. It’s strange... so strange.’
The number of enemies was growing. Without his help, he figured Yu He and the others wouldn’t be able to hold out for much longer.
----
"You can’t beat the two of us together. Just give up." Ye Han looked coldly at the blood-soaked Chu Liangyu, adding slowly, "It might be easier if you choose your own way to die."
The glow from the markings on her face was growing dimmer. ’If I can’t finish them before it goes out, it’ll really be too late.’
Chu Liangyu didn’t say a word, simply wiping a smear of blood from her lips.
Before the two could react, she charged. This time, she wasn’t trying to fight both of them at once. Instead, she locked her sights on a single target.
And that target was Ye Han. Fortunately, thanks to the protection of her High Tier Magic Robe, she could still withstand their attacks for a short while.
Under her vicious, life-or-death assault, Ye Han’s movements grew increasingly frantic.
"If you’ve got the guts, go after Jiang Li! What do you think you’re doing, relentlessly targeting me?"
Chu Liangyu’s attack speed didn’t falter. She took a direct hit to the back, yet still had the presence of mind to taunt him. "Because you’re the weakest."
Her words sent Ye Han into a trembling rage, his eyes instantly turning bloodshot.
Intense emotional swings during a fight can easily create an opening.
Chu Liangyu swung her longsword at an incredible speed, leaving a series of dazzling afterimages in its wake.
In the instant Ye Han’s focus wavered, her longsword shot out, aimed straight for his chest.
SCHLICK! With the sound of a blade sinking into flesh, all of Ye Han’s movements froze.
He stared at the blood gushing from his chest, his eyes wide with disbelief. An instant later, his body plummeted.
His fall sent a spray of snow into the air, but Jiang Li merely spared him a glance before resuming his assault on Chu Liangyu.
With one opponent down, the pressure on her lessened considerably. But Jiang Li still looked full of energy, forcing her to rally every ounce of her concentration to face him.
Taking advantage of the moment he had glanced at Ye Han, Chu Liangyu put some distance between them.
At the same time, she vanished from before Jiang Li, only to reappear behind him an instant later.
Crossbow in hand, Chu Liangyu raised her slender arm, and an arrow humming with biting killing intent shot toward Jiang Li’s back.
Just as Jiang Li blocked it with his longsword, she appeared to his left. With a sound of tearing air, a volley of countless arrows flew toward him.
Dealing with these arrows wasn’t difficult for Jiang Li. However, when he looked for Chu Liangyu again, her figure was already gone.
He wasn’t worried, though. Predicting the direction of Chu Liangyu’s next attack, he enveloped himself in his enormous white wings, blocking the sky-rending volley.
’Once this wave of attacks is over, I’ll...’
While this defense certainly protected him, it also completely blocked his line of sight.
Just as he thought all the arrows had been blocked, one arrow, virtually indistinguishable from the rest, had hidden itself among the volley. While the others were deflected by his wings, this one had stopped unhurriedly right in front of his face, quietly waiting for him to emerge.
The very instant Jiang Li retracted his wings, Chu Liangyu materialized, simultaneously thrusting a dagger toward his chest.
At the same time, Jiang Li directed the longsword in his hand to stab at Chu Liangyu’s back.
Neither of them was slow to react, but Chu Liangyu ultimately had the upper hand. Before the longsword could pierce her, she vanished, using the power of her trident.
When Jiang Li saw her again, she was holding the crossbow, her gaze utterly cold. Then, a dense rain of arrows fell upon him.
He clutched his bleeding wound with one hand, holding his longsword vertically before his chest as a steady stream of energy poured into it.
The longsword swept out, and in an instant, all the arrows dissolved into motes of light and vanished into the air.
