"You have good eyes."
"I have better eyes than you think."
"I am sure that’s true."
Kael didn’t even try to deny it.
"In these two days,
I watched your kindness, I watched your caution, your anger, your guilt, your patience, your plans—
I have watched it all."
Kael looked at him.
Honestly, some part of him wanted to tell the Dragon to stop saying the word Watch since it was making him shiver the more he thought about it.
But of course, his better side stopped him, his better side focused on the Dragon’s words.
"And after watching,
I made my decision."
The Dragon declared and those words made both Kael and Lavinia narrow their eyes.
"What decision?"
Kael asked, Ferrakar did not answer immediately, instead, the air beside him trembled, the space twisted.
For a moment, Kael’s body tensed.
An enemy’s attack?
He wondered.
Soon however, he realised who he was with.
No sane enemy would have the balls to attack them, not right now.
His body eased up.
Besides, the portal that was forming looked quite similar to the portal Ferrakar himself came out from, it just wasn’t as big.
Kael watched silently, the space beside Ferrakar opened slowly, then, something appeared.
And the instant Kael saw it—
His expression changed.
An Egg.
It was about a meter big, its shell was dark silver, almost black, covered with faint steel-like lines and every now and then, a soft golden light pulsed from inside it.
The moment the Egg appeared, the air changed. Kael felt it—
Ba-dump Ba-dump Ba-dump
Its heartbeat.
A heartbeat that was completely in sync with the Steel Dragon.
Yes, it was Ferrakar’s child.
Kael’s expression changed, he looked at Ferrakar with a somewhat surprised look on his face. Usually, Beasts almost never brought out their Eggs in front of humans.
Kael thought about it for a moment, but then he shrugged.
The Steel Dragon wasn’t a normal beast anyways, even if he brought it out, Kael highly doubted he, or any other human had what it took to take his child away, he highly doubted anyone would even dare to think of doing something to it.
The last thing one would want was to anger an entity THIS strong.
Ferrakar looked at the Egg and for the first time, Kael saw something different than his normal arrogance, coldness, or amusement in his eyes.
Softness.
"He is my child."
Ferrakar revealed, confirming Kael’s suspicion.
Kael’s eyes moved between Ferrakar and his Egg.
Lavinia was no different.
Honestly, both of them could tell what it was about, they just... even though their minds could already predict what the Dragon was going to say...
They just couldn’t imagine it happening.
After all—
What parent would willingly give his child away?
But—
"Take him."
The Steel Dragon offered the Egg to Kael.
And both Kael and Lavinia, even though they already guessed it, couldn’t believe it.
"What...?"
"Take him."
"You want me to... protect it?"
Kael asked.
"No, I want my child to protect you."
"You want me to Bond with him...?"
"Yes."
"Ferrakar..."
Kael wanted to say something.
Honestly, one part of his mind was celebrating.
A Steel Dragon!
They were Dragons who fought multiple Dragonborn Dragons, along with other Guardian Beasts from other Kingdoms alone.
Sure, they lost the battle, but they didn’t go down easy, they were so strong that the other Guardian Beasts had to sign a Treaty with them just to end it as peacefully as possible.
The Steel Dragons were absurdly strong.
Kael obviously wanted it, after all, gaining the Steel Dragon wouldn’t just give him a new bond, it would also give him a new Attribute.
Steel.
Kael couldn’t even imagine how helpful that would be.
But...
That was only one section of his mind, the other section, the section who was the father of Six children now—
That was... hesitating.
It was strange since he had even stolen an Egg before, just that... seeing an entity as strong as the Steel Dragon, giving his own child to someone else felt... heavy.
"You should not make this decision so easily."
Kael spoke carefully.
"Do you think I did?
For twelve hundred years, I watched the Velmourn name rot.
And after seeing what you did after the war, I understood something."
"What?"
Ferrakar looked at him as his golden eyes shone.
"The future of the Steel Dragons should not remain with the dead.
The Velmourn name will not recover, even with you leading them.
So instead of clinging to the Velmourn name, I want my child to be with a new name. A name that will usher Nerathis into a new Era.
I want him to be with you."
"I am a Hero, Ferrakar."
Kael spoke up with a serious look on his face.
"I won’t stay in Nerathis forever, I will leave.
And when I do, Lavinia and my Bonds will leave with me."
Kael spoke as he momentarily pointed at Lavinia. Lavinia didn’t deny it either, this was already decided, she no longer cared about Nerathis anyway or anything else, Kael was the only one who mattered.
So wherever he went, she would.
"I know that."
The Dragon nodded.
He wasn’t unfamiliar with the term Hero.
He knew Kael wasn’t from Nerathis.
And he would eventually leave.
That made Kael frown.
"If you give him to me, you will be separated from your child unless..."
Kael took a short pause as his eyes shone.
"You come with me as well."
It was obvious how valuable Ferrakar would be if the Dragon actually decided to join them but—
"I will not."
The Dragon directly shook his head.
"I am a Guardian Beast, I cannot leave Nerathis."
Kael blinked at those words.
He did not know that.
Do Guardian Beasts have some form of restriction? He wondered in his head. Right now however, that did not matter.
Right now, he looked at Ferrakar and frowned—
"Then why give your child to me?"
He couldn’t understand.
Does he... want to abandon his child...?
But...
Why?
