Dragon Genesis: I Can Create Dragons
Chapter 655: Tonight could have been the night…The Steel Dragon looked at Kael, then his eyes moved towards Lavinia, before moving back to Kael.
"Let’s talk."
He spoke.
And the moment Lavinia heard those words—
She nearly snapped.
Talk...?
Now of all times...?
NOW!?
She truly wanted to rip the Dragon apart.
Not that she could, the darn thing was too strong.
If only he was as perceptive as he was strong.
Lavinia snorted in her head, she looked at Kael, then she looked down there as her mind recalled the expression on his face when he was on top of her and she...
Tonight could have been the night...
She clicked her tongue.
"You want to talk...?"
Kael narrowed his eyes as well, he looked frustrated too, that made Lavinia feel somewhat better.
"Yes."
The Steel Dragon nodded.
"My name is Ferrakar."
Lavinia’s mouth twitched, the last thing she wanted was to have an introduction round right now, honestly, Kael was no different but oblivious to that, Ferrakar continued.
"I have been watching you for two days."
Kael looked at him and didn’t say anything.
He already knew Ferrakar was watching, he obviously wouldn’t be resting in a place like this when he could return to whatever place he had been living in for centuries.
However, since he didn’t know why the Dragon was watching him, he simply chose to ignore him and did what he had to do.
The Dragon continued—
"I watched how you moved, I watched how you gave orders. I watched how you treated the wounded, how you handled the dead, how you spoke to those who lost people because of you."
Ferrakar took a moment’s pause, looking into Kael’s eyes, as if he was trying to read his mind.
"I watched you stand in front of old men and children and tell them their warriors would never return.
You hated it.
And yet you did not hide from it.
You killed their kin, and you only did it to protect your own people, you weren’t in the wrong, not in the slightest.
Yet as you stood in front of those people, you lowered your head, you faced their hatred then you offered them a home."
Kael remained silent at those words.
Lavinia’s face changed too, all her previous frustration was gone, she only looked at the Steel Dragon and nodded inwardly.
He may not be perceptive, but at least he could use his eyes.
At least he could see everything Kael did, the responsible choices he made, the things he did for these people, people he didn’t even know, people of the world he wasn’t even from.
Ferrakar watched Kael for a long time.
"You carry guilt even when you make the correct choice."
He spoke, as if he was judging Kael.
"And while many may believe that makes you weak.
That is not true.
You do things most men in your place will not.
You chose the difficult path over an easy one, over and over again.
And I...
I see the result of these choices you make."
Kael tilted his head, slightly confused.
The Steel Dragon, on the other hand, only looked past him, towards the territory behind him and—
"I watched how these people looked at you.
Be it the Velmourns, the Stonefangs, the other tribes, even those who joined you only because they had no other choice. They do not look at you the same way."
Kael looked at the Steel Dragon, then he followed his gaze and looked at the settlement behind him.
Even from here, he could see people moving around the fires, some were working, some were resting, some were... mourning.
"They fear many things."
Ferrakar spoke.
"They fear what the future holds, they fear winter, they fear hunger, the Sky Kingdom, they fear me."
The Dragon turned back to Kael.
"But they do not fear you."
He spoke.
"They respect you.
They believe in you, even those who have only been here for two days, they might still doubt you but even they have respect for you.
That is rare.
People tend to fear a man capable of annihilating half of them, they might follow him out of fear—
But you—
You command respect.
They trust you because every time there is work to be done, you stand at the front."
The Dragon’s golden eyes glowed faintly.
"You eat after them, you rest after them, you heal their enemies because you know those enemies will soon become your people. You speak of shelters, roads, schools, food, language, and children, things these people never even considered let alone wanted—
You—
You work for them.
You truly work for the people."
"I have my selfish reasons."
Kael spoke, clearly he wasn’t very comfortable when he was praised like this.
"I am certain you have faster, more effective ways to fulfil your selfish desires."
The Steel Dragon only chuckled softly.
"After all, with the amount of resources you have, especially these Ants you have spread all over the Heights, you are sure to have more direct ways to get whatever it is you want."
Kael raised his eyebrows at those words.
He... never told him about the Ants...
Ferrakar noticed the change in his expression and that made him chuckle again.
"Do not look at me like that, Human.
I am old, not blind."
Kael stared at him, Ferrakar continued.
"And I did say, I watched you for two days."
"I just hope you know how terrifying that sounds."
Kael spoke honestly.
Hearing such words from a Dragon multiple times stronger than anything he had seen his entire life was... not easy to take.
Especially when he was saying it right to his face.
Honestly, Kael didn’t even know how to react to it. The only thing he could say was...
"You have good eyes."
The Dragon, however, only smiled, and the smile looked very terrifying on his Draconic face.
"I have better eyes than you think."
"I am sure that’s true."
Kael didn’t even try to deny it.
He was very sure he did.
