Even after achieving true Unity, Kael wasn’t done.
As he saw these people, as he thought about every single thing he could do for them, he started to realise something.
A place where people only worked and fought was not a kingdom.
It was a camp.
A large camp, maybe.
But it was still only a camp.
A true kingdom needed more.
People in a true kingdom needed rest, they needed festivals, music, games, places where children could play without fear, markets where people could trade, talk and laugh, open spaces where old men could sit in the sun and complain about the young, they needed songs, stories, competitions that did not end with blood.
They did not just have training grounds, they had playgrounds.
They had barracks and gathering halls.
People in a True Kingdom—
They had time to breathe.
Which honestly—
People in the Heights did not.
These people worked for 12 hours, recovered for the next 12 hours, while another shift worked for the hours they left, and they did it every single day.
There were no holidays, no time they could actually spend with their families, no time to... live.
They... truly were surviving.
That was it.
And Kael—
He wanted to change that as well.
Of course, he knew it wasn’t possible in one day, heck, even the changes he thought of before he could move to this would take weeks to be implemented.
But...
He still wanted to think it through.
At the very least, he wanted to give it some consideration.
This is what he was working towards,
A civilisation.
A real civilisation.
A place where people could grow stronger not only as soldiers, but as people. A place where children could grow up learning magic, combat, numbers, and still have the freedom to laugh and play.
A place that could... call itself a Kingdom.
A far-fetched dream, but Kael wanted to dream exactly that.
That was what these people deserved.
Kael thought about it with a light smile on his face, then, he just shook his head and returned to what was actually important right at this moment.
To moving the tribes properly, to counting the bodies, to mourning and respecting the dead, to healing the remaining wounded, to distributing the food—
He needed to focus on everything and along with that—
He needed to keep his focus on... him
The Steel Dragon.
Yes, he was still here, sitting in that open land, not moving an inch. The only sort of movement he did was to open his eyes and watch in silence, before closing them away in disinterest.
And honestly, after two whole days of him staying here, people began to doubt.
What was it that the Dragon wanted?
Was he truly here just to protect Kael?
Or was there something else?
Such questions came into their minds but...
No one dared to ask anything.
Kael too, didn’t think of anything either, he continued to work.
He moved from place to place, gave orders, listened to reports, solved small disputes and stopped larger ones before they could even happen.
By the time night arrived, even Lavinia could see that he was close to his limit.
"You need to rest."
"You know there is stil—"
He turned towards her but before he could say anything, Lavinia placed a finger on his lips and—
"There will always be something."
She spoke with a strict look on her face.
"You didn’t sleep properly yesterday, it’s time you do now."
She ordered and Kael—
After looking around one last time, at the situation that now seemed under control, he...
"Alright."
He nodded.
Lavinia’s expression softened.
The two returned to their quarters, the same quarters they were in when they first got here, then, they lay down.
"It was a long day."
Kael commented.
Lavinia slowly turned towards him and—
"Because it wasn’t just a day, it was two days."
"Hey, I did rest yesterday."
"You barely closed your eyes, you were worried that someone would attack and stayed awake."
"Those Outsiders who supported the Stormcallers still haven’t appeared—"
"Shhh."
Lavinia silenced him again.
"We have a literal Guardian Beast protecting us now, I doubt those Outsiders will appear."
Kael paused at that.
Lavinia then chuckled.
"And trust me, if those outsiders have a way to deal with the Steel Dragon, it wouldn’t matter whether you are asleep or awake when they attack."
"That makes sense."
Kael chuckled as well.
Lavinia, on the other hand, only looked into his eyes in silence.
"What?"
Kael asked.
"You have grown a lot."
"Of course, I am level 50 now."
"That is not what I am talking abou—"
Lavinia spoke with a deadpan look on her face but before she could even complete those words.
Kael kissed her lips and she froze.
This time however, Kael didn’t end with a small peck, he kept his lips there, feeling Lavinia’s soft lips, Lavinia did the same, enjoying every moment.
Kael then rolled on top of her, Lavinia enjoyed the feeling of his body pressing down on her as they continued kissing.
Then, once Kael finally stopped—
"This must be what you were talking about, no? I’ve gotten quite good at this too."
He lifted his head and grinned.
Lavinia looked at him with a slightly dazed look on her face.
"You... really have grown..."
She spoke with a light, beautiful smile on her face.
A smile that made Kael gulp.
He couldn’t help but once again realise how ridiculously beautiful this woman was, his body reacted, however—
Before he could act on that reaction—
"Kael."
A deep voice echoed throughout the city, every single person heard it.
The one it was intended for was no different.
"He... has the worst timing."
Kael’s mouth twitched in annoyance.
Lavinia only chuckled.
Inside her mind however, she was thinking of ways to kill that beast for good.
"I should probably see what he has to say."
Kael spoke.
"Yes..."
Lavinia nodded, as unwilling as she was, she understood how important this could be, so she didn’t waste time.
Both of them stood up, left the shelter and walked towards the Dragon.
"You called?"
Kael asked and the Steel Dragon looked at him, then at Lavinia standing beside him, before looking back at him and—
"Let’s talk."
And the moment she heard those words—
Lavinia nearly snapped.
