Dragon Genesis: I Can Create Dragons

Chapter 670: What if… the Hero himself was being controlled…?

"Grrrrr!"

Despite Veylara’s healing, the prisoners still tried to pounce at them mindlessly and when Veylara saw that, her face turned grim.

She looked at Kael and noticed he was already looking at her. The two of them stared at each other in silence for a good while, then—

"Are you thinking the same thing?"

Veylara asked and Kael—

He nodded.

"Yes, they are corrupted."

Elira frowned at those words.

"Corrupted? Where are their Bonds?"

She didn’t understand.

A Corrupted Human was a human who used the Power of Corruption to strengthen his Bonds. Even if these people were corrupted, what did that have anything to do with their state? Wasn’t that an entirely different topic? Or was she missing something?

Arlan had a frown on his face as well.

And Kael—

"No."

He shook his head.

"Not their Bonds, they are dead.

I am talking about them.

*They* are corrupted."

"...what?"

Elira blinked, still a little confused, because the only other conclusion her mind could make of that statement was something she did not wish to believe.

But Kael—

"No one said that it’s only the beasts who can be corrupted.

What if... the Power of Corruption is used on a human instead?"

He asked a question and both Elira and Arlan widened their eyes in horror. Just that thought alone felt wildly repulsive.

Kael noticed their expressions, he then turned back towards the prisoners—

"Of course, I am still not sure.

I will need Verdant Omen to say it for cert—"

"They are definitely corrupted."

That was when Veylara spoke up and the next instant, both her children turned toward her.

"Mother...?"

Arlan frowned. Veylara on the other hand, stepped closer to the cell, the prisoners inside immediately lunged toward her, the chains pulled them back, their bodies slammed on the floor and that made them laugh.

"There is no other explanation."

Veylara looked down at them with cold eyes.

"Only the Power of Corruption can do this to... anyone."

She spoke, then, she looked at Kael and—

"I will get the Verdant Omen so it can be confirmed officially, but be clear, that will only be a formality."

Veylara looked at the prisoners and without a doubt in her mind.

"This is corruption."

She declared.

And Kael—

He didn’t say anything.

Honestly, he already knew it.

To him, it was very, very obvious.

After all—

...

Yes.

Their stats told him everything he wanted to know.

They were just like the corrupted beasts, the only difference was that the corrupted beasts got stronger when the Power of Corruption was used on them, these people did not.

Now was it because the Power of Corruption could not strengthen humans, or because the Power of Corruption wasn’t used properly, honestly, he did not know.

What he did know, however, was the fact that every single one of the enemy soldiers that attacked them, even the tribe leaders, they were all the same.

They were all... corrupted.

Of course, no one else could see what Kael was seeing, he had already told Lavinia about it, as for the rest, they only stared at the mess in front of them, while Veylara—

"And if this truly is corruption, which it is."

Her face turned very solemn.

"Then from now on, we must understand that humans can be corrupted too."

The instant those words were said, the place turned silent, the prisoners were still thrashing, doing everything in their power to tear Kael and others apart, though at this point, Kael and others weren’t noticing them.

They had something far... heavier to worry about.

Especially Kael because he knew something these people did not.

"There is something else."

He spoke up.

Lavinia looked at him, as if she was asking if he really was going to say that. Kael only nodded, someone from the mainland needed to know.

And honestly, other than the Stormholds, he didn’t know who it was he could trust.

"What?"

Veylara narrowed her eyes.

Kael looked at the prisoners again and—

"It is possible that the Power of Corruption does not just change humans."

He paused for a moment, as if even he was having a hard time digesting what he was about to say.

"Maybe it can control them as well."

And the instant those words were said, the air turned colder.

"...what?"

Elira’s frown deepened even further.

Kael looked at her, then at Arlan and finally at Veylara, and then, he started explaining.

He told them about the war, about how he played out a trap to win this thing with as few casualties as possible, Arlan nodded at that plan, seemingly satisfied, Veylara didn’t say anything, she only listened.

Kael then mentioned how he took his people to overwhelm the hunting party that came for him, to make them submit but then how the enemy, that had no signs of previous cooperation, suddenly moved on their own.

"...what?"

Arlan frowned.

"Yes, when I was lured out, the leaders of different tribes suddenly moved, all at the same time, without any contact whatsoever. They acted without warning or discussing anything, even their closest people seemed confused.

They just... moved."

Kael then took a small pause and then—

"As if... they were being controlled."

He explained and the instant he did, the air turned grim, Elira and Arlan stopped moving entirely, Veylara’s eyes sharpened.

For a few seconds, no one said anything.

The idea itself was too dangerous, the fact that even humans could be corrupted and be turned into mindless soldiers that did not feel pain was already terrifying enough but...

The corrupted humans could be controlled too...?

What...?

This was... utterly ridiculous.

If this was true then...

Who were they supposed to trust!?

How did they know who the enemy was and who was not!?

If anyone could be controlled, then wasn’t the world already over? What if the Kings were being controlled? What if the Demi Gods were being controlled?

Or worse...

What if...

The Hero himself was being controlled...?
