Dragon Genesis: I Can Create Dragons
Chapter 669: Those smiles are repulsive."This is it."
Kael spoke as he pointed at the cell in front of him, the Stormholds standing beside him frowned.
The previous lighthearted atmosphere where Kael brought them to his Quarters, fed them, then showed them around the city, all while they joked around and remembered the past, was now over.
Now, Kael shifted to a more important topic.
Something he needed to discuss with someone influential from the Main Land for a while now.
And just like that—
Kael and Lavinia brought them here.
The deepest part of the Velmourn Prison.
There were several cells built side by side and inside those cells were the prisoners the Alliance Army had captured during the War.
And the instant Elira, Arlan and Veylara saw them, their expressions changed.
The prisoners looked like humans, well, at the very least, they were built like humans but... there was something very wrong about them.
Their bodies were covered with injuries, cuts, burns, broken bones that had not been properly treated, deep wounds that would normally make one scream in agony. Some of them had torn skin, some had missing fingers, some had dried blood covering half their faces.
And yet—
Despite everything, despite their awful situation—
They were smiling.
Their eyes were still unfocused now, as if they didn’t know what they were supposed to do, however, the moment they noticed Kael and the others, they reacted all at once.
Their bodies moved, the chains around their wrists and ankles rattled loudly as they tried to rush forward.
"Grrrraaaa..."
One of them opened his mouth and made a sound that was not quite a word, another slammed his shoulder against the bars, a third dragged his broken leg across the ground, still trying to move closer.
They looked at Kael, at Lavinia, Elira, Arlan, and even a Demi God like Veylara, a being who should have normally made them shiver in terror, but their smiles only widened further.
Their eyes shone with a cruel, merciless look, as if they were ready to tear the five apart, yes, even in that situation, even when they could barely move, even when their beasts were killed and they were practically harmless—
All these ’things’ cared about was tearing apart the people standing in front of them.
"What... is that?"
Elira questioned, her face darkened in disgust. Arlan’s hand instinctively moved to his sword. Veylara didn’t react physically, her eyes however, did turn colder.
Lavinia and Kael stood in front of the cells, looking at the prisoners quietly.
"They have been like this since we saw them."
Kael spoke and just then—
CLANG
One prisoner suddenly threw himself against the bars, he obviously wasn’t strong enough to break the cage, the sound echoed through the prison.
Kael, Lavinia and Veylara didn’t react, Elira however, narrowed her eyes even further.
"They are injured this badly and still moving like that?"
"Yes."
Kael nodded.
"They should not even be conscious."
Arlan frowned.
"Their injuries are too deep.
"I know."
Arlan looked at one prisoner whose leg was broken but he was still trying to crawl towards them with that repulsive grin.
"How is he even moving?"
"He laughed when the healer pressed his wound.
I doubt they feel pain."
Kael answered, staring at the said prisoner.
Arlan’s expression twisted at those words.
"Those smiles are repulsive."
Elira couldn’t help but comment in disgust, all her previous ease and jolly mood was now ruined.
"What happened to them?"
Veylara questioned, staring at the prisoners.
Clearly, they weren’t in normal condition, something must have happened.
"I do not know."
Kael shook his head.
"They don’t say anything."
"What...?"
Veylara tilted her head and her frown deepened.
"No matter what we ask, they do not say anything, torture, tempting them with food, or any other form of interrogation, nothing works.
It is as if their ability to speak has been taken away."
"I don’t think it’s just their ability to speak."
Elira pointed out, honestly, at this point, she couldn’t even look at the prisoners with a straight face, the more she looked, the more disgusted she felt.
The strong smell of blood and their rotting injuries didn’t help. It was repulsive through and through. Honestly, it made her wonder how someone like Kael, who came from a relatively peaceful world and didn’t even know how to hold a weapon a few months ago, was standing without a change in his expression.
Just...
What had he been through to not even flinch at the sight, let alone look uncomfortable?
"I do not deny that."
Kael nodded at Elira’s words, then, he looked back at the prisoners and—
"They do not react properly to questions, as if they cannot understand. They only stare, smile and try to attack anyone who comes close."
Elira narrowed her eyes, trying to understand what the hell it was she was witnessing, her eyes then fell on one of the prisoners, who had started scratching the stone floor with his nails, probably trying to dig his way out towards them.
Obviously, that didn’t happen, his nails actually broke while he did that, blood came out, but the prisoner—
He did not stop.
"What the hell..."
Arlan’s face turned grim.
"Have you tried to heal them? Maybe their minds were affected by something?"
Veylara was already suggesting a solution.
"We did."
Kael nodded.
"Nothing changed."
"Did you try... stronger healing?"
Veylara asked. She knew the situation in the Heights, from what she knew, in the name of healing, they only had bandages, herbs and other minor healing artifacts that they could scrape from the merchants.
But—
"We tried everything."
Kael’s answer did not change.
"You are welcome to try if you want to."
He spoke directly.
"Alright then."
Veylara did not back down either, this was something she needed to be completely sure about, because if it actually was what she was thinking—
This was far grimmer than anything she had witnessed till now.
Without waiting, Veylara took out one of her strongest healing artifacts, threw it inside the prison, the artifact let out a strong light, covering every single being present there.
In an instant, their injuries healed, even the injuries that had begun to rot started to heal.
Within ten minutes, every single one of them was perfectly fine, well, at least physically because—
"Grrrrr!"
They were still smiling, wanting to tear them apart.
Yes, Veylara’s artifact healed them, but it didn’t change their mental state.
And Veylara’s face turned grim.
