The defense state had ended at midnight.

Max had kept the combat portals closed under his own authority while staff confirmed that the transition back to normal operation had completed correctly. The Sanctuary and Corathen never closed. Only the first four levels remained behind temporary barriers.

Their status now waited in his interface.

[Dungeon Defense State: Inactive.]

[Normal instancing available.]

[Hostile shared-territory entrance: Closed.]

[Public combat access remains suspended by Dungeon Master order.]

Max opened an empty test copy of Fey Nights.

Silver fog moved between intact trees. The visitor trail began where it always had. No abandoned siege camp occupied the first clearing. No burned road led toward the stream. The normal instance had loaded from the approved adventure configuration rather than copying the current condition of the shared defensive territory.

That distinction did not repair anything the challenge damaged. It allowed ordinary parties to receive the same resettable experience they had used before defense mode canceled the copies.

Max checked the Orc Highlands, both versions of Level Three, and Dread Fort. Every instance opened from its saved configuration. The enemies inside them would reset after each attempt and remember nothing about earlier parties, just as they always had.

"Test groups are ready." Anna said.

Five sets of dungeon entities entered five separate copies. Max did not need them to clear every level. They confirmed that entry conditions worked, portals connected to the correct destinations, resurrection protection recognized the copies, and no route accidentally opened into the actual defensive territory.

The final group entered Dread Fort and returned through an emergency exit after the system registered the test.

Every test and every protective check passed.

Max then removed the temporary suspension.

He still did not open the portals immediately.

The central square had filled while the tests were underway.

Word spread that Max intended to appear after breakfast. By the time he and Anna left the office, people occupied the roads, balconies, bridges, and every space around the fountain that did not block a portal. Gnomes maintained lanes for travelers who had ordinary reasons to cross the square.

The crowd contained adventurers, merchants, craftsmen, residents, and families. Some had lived inside the Sanctuary for months. Others had arrived through Crag Mountain that morning and discovered their first visit coincided with the end of a divine invasion.

Quin walked several steps behind Max and Anna.

The crowd quieted as Max approached the fountain.

He did not climb onto a stage. The Sanctuary carried his voice wherever it needed to reach.

"The challenge is over." Max said. "The core is secure."

The cheering began before he could continue.

Max waited.

The people nearest him quieted first and turned toward the people behind them until the sound lowered enough for him to speak again.

"The Sanctuary remained open because its protections never failed. Corathen remained open because its civilian routes were separate from the hostile entrance. Those systems worked because staff, local governments, healers, guards, and ordinary residents continued doing their jobs while the defense continued elsewhere."

Gnomes near the portal lanes suddenly became the focus of several hundred appreciative looks. Many tried to appear as though they had expected public recognition.

"The first four combat levels have completed their inspections." Max continued. "Normal instancing will resume today. Parties entering them will receive the standard versions of each level. The shared defense territory is not open for sightseeing, salvage, or unauthorized exploration."

That ended several plans already being whispered near the back.

"If commanders request outside materials or assistance, contracts will be posted through the normal channels. Do not enter restricted routes because you believe helping excuses ignoring a barrier."

Several adventurers avoided looking at one another.

Max allowed the warning to settle.

"You may enter the combat levels when the gnomes remove the barriers."

This time, the cheering turned toward the portal concourse.

The gnomes did not hurry because thousands of adventurers wanted them to. They opened one lane at a time. Parties confirmed their levels, accepted the same warnings they had received before the challenge, and entered separate copies of Fey Nights.

The first group through had never attempted Max’s dungeon before.

They carried new equipment, a copied guide, and the confidence of people who had listened to seven days of stories about an army crossing the forest. Their instance contained five adventurers instead of thousands. That did not prevent the first fairy from stealing their guide only minutes after they reached the fog.

Max closed the viewing window.

Some lessons still needed to be learned personally.

The Level Two portal opened next. Experienced parties entered the Orc Highlands and found the orcs back in their ordinary roles. Hizon’s goblins did not occupy the arena road. The Orc Chief had returned from Corathen with his forces and enough dissatisfaction about missing the final battle to make the first groups regret arriving on opening day.

Level Three followed. The Dwarven Airship and Elven Road remained separate choices unlocked by their normal conditions. Dread Fort opened last.

Within an hour, every combat level had active visitor instances.

The Sanctuary had returned to normal operation without pretending the last week never happened.

Max and Anna left the crowd to the gnomes and walked toward the Undercity.

"You did not mention Kincaid." Anna said.

"I barely know enough to mention him to myself."

Quin followed them onto the lower road. "He will dislike being described as something requiring inspection."

"That improves the description."

The Undercity had operated throughout the challenge. Hizon’s absence moved more work onto his assistants, but the goblin markets still opened, wholesale goods still entered the dungeon core, and workshops continued producing everything from nails to enchanted components.

Gibble-Hammer had not stopped testing the runic archive.

Lessa met them beside the locked display case. The ten copper plates remained inside. A second rack now held eight iron squares.

"Eight consecutive passes." She said before greeting anyone. "The ninth distorted after the compensation plate shifted."

Hammer pointed toward a new clamp around the tablet’s frame. "It will not shift again."

"He said that before number nine."

"It did not shift on the first eight."

Gibble handed Anna the test record. Every failure, adjustment, and repeated measurement filled its own line. The challenge had not made the iron behave more reliably or less. Progress continued at the speed of careful work.

Max examined the new clamp without touching it.

"Begin another sequence after the inspector approves the change."

"That was already the plan." Lessa said.

Max smiled. "Then you did not need me."

"We needed Anna to sign the material extension. You came with her."

The answer pleased him more than being told an entire workshop had waited for the Dungeon Master.

While Anna reviewed the extension, Max checked the other ordinary reports.

Deepvein had opened its contracts on schedule. The Dawnhoof Riding Grounds needed three fence posts replaced after a team discovered that a race marker and an obstacle were not the same thing. Redbrook requested clarification about whether imported siege tools could travel through its gates now that the challenge had ended. Mira had submitted a workshop application for a supervised Corathian material course, and Garrick had added four pages of questions about the building where it would be taught.

The dungeon still contained more work than Max could finish.

That felt normal.

A golden communication request appeared while Lessa and Hammer argued over who had tightened the failed clamp.

[Patron Kincaid requests communication.]

Max moved it to the scheduled queue.

[Proposed time: Two hours.]

Kincaid accepted the schedule without objecting.

Anna noticed. "He is learning."

"It has only been a few hours since we last spoke."

"Slowly."

They completed the workshop review, ate lunch in the Undercity, and returned to the office before opening the connection.

Kincaid appeared in the same luxurious room. This time, there was no wine in his hand. A stack of pages rested on the table beside him.

"I prepared the rules governing repayment of the power used during your modification." He said. "Every available form, restriction, and consequence is included."

Max accepted the transferred record but did not open the options.

"Anna and I will review them."

"Of course."

The minor god sounded as though the words required practice.

Kincaid glanced toward the office window visible behind Max. "May I ask for observation access to the Sanctuary’s public areas?"

Max did not answer immediately.

The request was different from Kincaid silently watching every private room and restricted territory through a patron connection. Thousands of ordinary visitors could already see the central square.

Max opened a limited invitation.

[Patron observation invitation.]

[Permitted territory: Sanctuary public square and portal concourse.]

[Duration: 30 minutes.]

[Private communication, restricted routes, residential interiors, and dungeon-core information excluded.]

Kincaid accepted.

His attention shifted as the public view opened. Adventuring parties entered Fey Nights through separate portals. Merchants moved toward Corathen. Gnomes directed wagons away from pedestrian lanes while a group of children argued over who had won a race around the fountain.

"You reopened already." Kincaid said.

"The normal instances passed inspection. There was no reason not to reopen."

"Most dungeon masters would spend longer displaying their victory."

"The people waiting to use the dungeon already know it survived."

Kincaid watched a carpenter carry a repaired chair across the square and deliver it to the hospital reception desk.

"This is not what the other apprentices expected a human dungeon to become." He said.

"You are not currently allowed to observe the other champions."

"I know my fellow apprentices. Their expectations are easier to predict than their champions."

Max left the invitation active but did not expand it.

"Did you learn anything about the next task?" Max asked.

"Not yet. The Elder God said we would reconvene after the first challenge, but he has not—"

Kincaid stopped.

His attention moved toward something beyond Max’s window.

The playful confidence left his expression.

"What happened?" Anna asked.

"We have been summoned. All patrons whose champions remain in the competition are ordered to report."

"For the next task?" Max asked.

"Presumably."

Kincaid stood. The luxurious room behind him began to fade.

"When I return, I will tell you everything I am permitted to tell you."

The communication window closed.

[Patron Kincaid temporarily unavailable.]

[Reason: Elder summons.]

Max looked toward the office window.

The Sanctuary’s combat portals were open again. Beyond them, Corathen continued beneath a sky large enough to contain roads no visitor had traveled.

Somewhere outside Max’s reach, a thousand champions had become fewer, and the Elder God was deciding what came next.
