Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Chapter 137: The Price of Permission

Max spent the hour reading what a god believed two percent of a universe’s system was worth.

The answer changed depending on the page.

One option would permanently increase the strength of his body and mana core. Another would reinforce the dungeon core against physical and magical interference. A third would create a divine artifact capable of changing its form to suit whichever class Max used.

The dungeon options were more expensive.

He could add a limited divine market, create a protected storage domain, strengthen the connection between levels, or establish an emergency reserve that would continue operating if the core became isolated from part of the dungeon.

Anna read every consequence beside him.

"This one says the reserve must be replenished with divine energy." She said.

"Provided by Kincaid."

"At a rate he determines after the initial term."

Max moved it into the rejected section.

They had already removed anything requiring Kincaid’s continued cooperation. A debt should not become a reason Max needed to maintain a pleasant relationship with the person paying it.

The physical options were useful. The core options were useful. Almost everything in the record could make Max or the dungeon stronger.

None addressed why the debt existed.

Kincaid had seen an opportunity, taken authority that belonged to Max, and decided that the result justified acting without permission. An improved mana core would benefit Max. It would not prevent another god from reaching the same conclusion.

Anna turned to the section labeled Bounded Authorities.

Those options did not provide raw strength. They established rules the system would recognize within a defined area.

The examples included ownership over a divine artifact, authority to reject foreign blessings, control over patron-created portals, and the right to identify anyone using divine observation inside the dungeon.

Max read the last example twice.

"That is closer." He said.

"It only identifies them after they begin observing."

"Then we change it."

The communication request became active at the scheduled time.

Max accepted with Anna beside him. Quin remained in the Sanctuary rather than attending. This was not a threat requiring a weapon. It was a contract requiring people willing to read unpleasant details until everyone agreed on what the words meant.

Kincaid appeared without wine.

"The Elder God confirmed your repayment will not count as patron assistance." He said. "Provided the value does not exceed the debt, and I attach no concealed conditions."

"We will discuss the meeting after the debt." Max said.

Kincaid nodded. "What did you select?"

"None of the prepared options."

The minor god looked toward the stack of pages beside him. "All right. What do you want instead?"

Max transferred a new page.

It held no title. Anna had refused to name anything until they knew it could exist.

Kincaid read the first paragraph and became very still.

"You want to use a divine boon to restrict divine access."

"Yes."

"Not improve your defenses against armies."

"This is a defense."

Kincaid returned to the beginning.

The proposed authority covered Max, Anna, their marriage bond, the dungeon core, and every territory directly bound to it. A god could not observe them through divine means, alter them, place a mark upon them, establish a connection, or open a route into the dungeon without permission from the person or authority affected.

It also required any attempted divine quest, portal, blessing, curse, or similar connection targeting the dungeon to declare itself before taking effect.

Max could accept it.

He could reject it.

He could place limits on what it was allowed to reach.

"This is too broad." Kincaid said.

"Which part?"

"The territory. Your dungeon contains several overlapping dimensions and a country. Preventing every divine action anywhere inside it would require more authority than the debt. It could also interfere with blessings carried by ordinary visitors."

"Then limit it to divine actions directed at the dungeon or initiated from outside its existing system," Anna said. "We are not trying to strip a priest’s blessing when he walks through the entrance."

Kincaid changed the language. "This protects the dungeon as an entity and its bound infrastructure. It does not claim every person standing inside it."

"Good." Max said.

"It cannot block the Elder God’s authority over the competition."

"We included that exception."

"You included an exception for declared challenge authority. My master will not permit a lesser agreement to require his permission before he acts."

"Then any Elder action is identified as Elder authority." Max said. "I may not be able to reject it, but I will know which exception is being used."

Kincaid hesitated.

"Can the boon do that?" Anna asked.

"Yes. It cannot force him to explain the purpose or reveal information he has chosen to conceal. It can identify the authority class passing through the protection."

"Add it."

Kincaid added the sentence.

They worked through the page one condition at a time.

The authority could not prevent the normal operation of the dungeon core or DC. It could not interfere with systems Max or Anna had already accepted. It could not cancel the competition, block a future challenge, or prevent the Elder God from enforcing its rules.

It would block Kincaid.

It would block other minor gods.

It would block divine observers, marks, gates, and connections unless they received permission through the new authority.

Anna’s protection belonged to Anna. It did not depend on her remaining beside Max, entering the dungeon, or maintaining their marriage bond. The bond itself received separate protection because it connected them both.

"If I am outside the dungeon?" She asked.

"The personal portion remains with you." Kincaid said. "The dungeon portion remains with the core. No god could use you as an unprotected route into it."

"And Max?"

"The same."

Max selected the paragraph concerning revocation.

"This says the authority can be surrendered."

"By you or Anna, for your individual protections. By you as Dungeon Master for the dungeon portion."

"Not by you."

"No. Once established, I cannot revoke it, bypass it, or reclaim the power used to create it."

"Put that in the active terms instead of the explanation."

Kincaid did.

The final restriction concerned quests.

"A divine quest offered generally across a city would not require your permission." Kincaid said. "Even if people later used it against your interests. The protection does not control what strangers choose to do."

"That is not what we asked." Max said.

"I know. I want the distinction recorded. A quest that directly connects to your dungeon, marks its core, opens a gate, changes its rules, or registers participants inside it would trigger this authority. A god offering people money to find a mountain would not."

The challenge would have qualified under almost every condition.

The Elder God’s exception would still have allowed it.

Max disliked that, but he had not expected Kincaid’s debt to release him from the competition. What mattered was that another minor god could not copy the challenge after hearing what happened.

Kincaid completed the revised proposal.

[Proposed Boon: Sovereign Consent.]

[Protected persons: Max Clarkson; Annastasia Clarkson.]

[Protected bond: Voluntary marriage bond between protected persons.]

[Protected domain: Dungeon core and infrastructure directly bound to Champion Max’s dungeon authority.]

[Effect: External divine observation, alteration, marking, connection, or domain entry requires permission from the affected protected person or domain authority.]

[Directed divine quests, portals, and imposed rule changes must declare their authority and requested scope before connection. Lesser divine authority may be rejected or limited.]

[Exceptions: Elder authority; active competition rules; native system and dungeon-core functions previously accepted by protected authorities.]

[Exception use will be identified by authority class.]

[Patron Kincaid possesses no right of revocation, bypass, observation, or entry through this boon.]

[Estimated authority required: equal to recorded compensation debt.]

[Ongoing patron contribution: none.]

Max read it.

Anna read it.

Then they asked DC to audit it.

[The proposed boon contains no concealed permissions, commands, observation routes, transfer conditions, or obligations.]

[The boon will not alter cognition, loyalty, emotion, class access, core ownership, or existing dungeon authority.]

[The declared cost equals the outstanding compensation vow.]

"Will accepting it settle the debt completely?" Max asked.

[Yes.]

"Will it create a new debt to Kincaid?"

[No.]

"Can he influence how it interprets permission after it is established?"

[No.]

Kincaid waited through every question.

Max expected impatience. He saw none.

"Anna?" He asked.

"My portion is written as mine." She said. "The boundaries are clear. I accept."

Her approval illuminated half of the notice.

Max approved the rest.

Kincaid raised one hand.

There was no flash of gold. No voice announced that Max had become stronger. The room simply became quiet in a way it had not been before.

For one instant, Max felt connections surrounding him.

The dungeon core beneath every level. DC’s familiar presence. His voluntary bond with Anna. The authorized communication between his office and Kincaid’s room.

Something closed around them without squeezing. The communication window vanished.

Anna looked at the empty space above the desk. A new request appeared.

[Minor divine communication attempt detected.]

[Authority: Patron Kincaid.]

[Requested scope: voice and visual communication with Max Clarkson and Annastasia Clarkson.]

[Duration: until ended by either protected participant.]

[Accept?]

Max looked at Anna.

She nodded.

He accepted.

Kincaid reappeared.

"It removed me in the middle of establishing it." He said.

"That was an effective demonstration."

"You spent a divine boon creating a door that closes in gods’ faces."

"You used my power without permission." Max said. "I used the repayment to make permission necessary in the future."

Kincaid considered that.

"I cannot argue with the symmetry."

A final notice opened.

[Patron compensation vow fulfilled.]

[Unauthorized system-authority debt: settled.]

[Sovereign Consent: active.]

The words did not repair the choice Kincaid made before Max entered Prime. They did not return the other life Max might have lived.

They did establish what would happen next time someone decided Max needed an improvement.

They would ask.

"The debt is settled." Max said.

Kincaid did not ask for gratitude. "Yes."

Anna closed the repayment record.

"Now I believe you wanted to talk about the meeting you came from." She said.

Kincaid reported the empty seats, the tailored challenges, and the new restrictions governing patron aid. He explained that fewer than four hundred apprentices remained, although the Elder God had not provided an exact number. He repeated the answer concerning failed champions and admitted that no one had learned what the competition was selecting.

"And the next challenge?" Max asked.

"No active countdown. The Elder God said you would receive time and that a notice would appear when a countdown became relevant."

Max opened his champion interface.

[Active Champion Challenge: None.]

"That is almost information." He said.

"It was the most precise answer anyone received."

"Did he say what patrons should prepare their champions to do?"

"Choose."

Max waited.

"That was the complete answer." Kincaid said.

"I continue to dislike his teaching style."

"You should know that one of my fellow apprentices objected to your selection because your soul came from outside Prime universe. The Elder God confirmed it was allowed."

"Was there a chance he would decide otherwise after six months?"

"With my master, I avoid assigning a zero percent chance to anything."

Max added the meeting record to the champion archive.

"Could you send a written copy of everything you are permitted to share? Include the patron-aid rules and identify what you are prohibited from telling me."

"I will."

"We will schedule another conversation after we read it."

Kincaid inclined his head. "Understood, Max." The minor god then ended the communication.

Anna looked toward the new Sovereign Consent controls.

Max closed the divine menus.

The dungeon still had open portals, active contracts, and several thousand ordinary decisions waiting for him. For the first time since learning Kincaid existed, none of those decisions had to begin with wondering whether a god was already inside the room.
