Blackwater Reach learned Renn was coming three days before his force reached the western ridge.

The official notice arrived first. It named Renn as head of the Ruskell family, declared Helmar a wanted criminal, and ordered every guard and employee at Blackwater to recognize the transfer of authority. A second document promised ordinary soldiers consideration if they surrendered and preserved evidence.

Helmar read both from the central building Lucian had entered weeks earlier.

"How many?" He asked, curious about the force Renn had raised.

Brogan stood across the desk. "One hundred adventurers. Ruskell relatives follow behind them."

"Ironcloud soldiers?"

"None identified."

Helmar set the council notice beside a lamp. "Then Ironcloud wants Renn to solve its problem without risking its own people."

"The adventurers are a problem."

"Most are untested recruits."

"They are guard recruits trained inside a dungeon that returns them after death. The rest were selected because they already know how to fight.

Helmar’s artificial hand closed around the paper. "Then kill them until they decide the contract is not worth the pain."

He ordered the outer posts strengthened and moved additional guards toward the western approach. Blackwater’s airships would watch the broader valleys. Ward crews activated barriers that had remained dormant while the property concealed itself.

The preparations changed the mood among his soldiers.

Some had followed Helmar for years and believed the council was controlled by rivals. Others served because Blackwater paid well. The official notice forced both groups to consider what obedience would mean if Renn’s claim survived.

Helmar addressed them from the compound yard.

He called Renn an ignorant boy manipulated by foreigners. He claimed Rod intended to seize the mine, steal Ruskell wealth, and divide the property among adventurers. He did not mention the ring or explain what his workers sought below.

"Ironcloud refused to send its army because the council knows its ruling is weak." He said. "If Renn possessed the family’s loyalty, he would not need outsiders to enforce it."

The argument persuaded those already loyal. It left others quieter than before.

Rod’s force approached openly along the river road.

They did not attempt to repeat Lucian’s route or conceal one hundred people in terrain watched by airships.

Dirk sent scouts ahead in pairs. Their purpose was not to enter Blackwater unseen. They marked new observation posts, confirmed bridges Helmar had weakened, and watched for forces preparing outside the legal property boundary.

The nearest practical graveyard stood beside an abandoned mining settlement half a day’s march west of Blackwater. Rod established the staging camp there.

The camp placed supply wagons nearby, organized equipment by unit, and assigned quartermasters who were not part of the attacking hundred.

Renn distributed dungeon coins according to the list prepared in the Sanctuary. Every participant checked the amount needed for revival protection before the force continued.

Rod addressed them only once.

"If you die, you return here. Take the equipment assigned to you and report to the camp leader. Do not run back alone because you are angry. Units will return together."

The adventurers understood. No one needed a lecture about how graveyards worked.

Korran examined the council documents one final time. "We should offer surrender before crossing the property marker."

Renn agreed.

A messenger approached Blackwater carrying no weapon and displaying the council seal. Helmar’s outer guards allowed him close enough to deliver the demand without opening their barrier.

The answer came back written across the bottom.

Renn Ruskell possesses no authority at Blackwater Reach.

Korran read it and passed it to Renn. "He refused in his own hand."

"Will that matter?"

"To anyone still deciding which side is lawful, yes."

Rod delayed the advance until his scouts returned.

Helmar had expanded four observation positions to nine. Two controlled the river road. Three watched the southern slopes. Others covered the landing shelf and ravine. Fixed ward stones still followed the pattern Lucian mapped, but additional portable markers extended their range.

Dirk placed the updated map beside the old one. "He expects the road to carry the main attack."

"It will." Rod said.

Lana looked at him. "You want him watching it?"

"Renn has to approach somewhere his people can see him. We cannot hide the lawful owner in a ditch while asking soldiers to change sides."

The main group would advance along the road beneath Renn’s colors. Dain commanded the front formation. Lana distributed mages among them to counter wards and projectiles. A second group climbed the southern approach after scouts disabled its nearest signal post. Dirk led archers toward the ridge, while a fourth group waited to move wherever Helmar weakened his line.

The airship shelf created the greatest danger. Three armed vessels rested there, and two more circled above the valley. Rod lacked an airship force of his own. While the Five Knots were capable adventures, they operated a merchant vessel, not an assault vessel. Rod didn’t bother trying to hire them when Renn informed him how much repairs to an airship actually cost. Nobody was willing to pay that much.

Valewick studied their flight pattern. "The wards anchoring that shelf also stabilize the mooring towers. If we disrupt them, the ships cannot land safely."

"Can you disrupt the shelf without dropping a tower into the compound?" Lana asked.

He considered the distances. "Yes, if I have time to set the spell correctly."

"You will have the time the front line gives you. Not the time you would prefer."

Valewick accepted that without argument.

Renn’s relatives traveled behind the central group. Korran remained beside Renn in the lead wagon, visible beneath the family banner.

The first defensive ward appeared as a faint distortion across the road.

Rod halted before it.

He used an amplifying token to address Blackwater’s guards.

"Renn Ruskell has been recognized as head of the Ruskell family and owner of this property. Helmar is wanted by Ironcloud. Lay down your weapons and you will not be harmed merely for serving here. Anyone holding slaves or destroying evidence will be treated as part of his crimes."

An arrow struck the road before him.

"That is the answer." Dain said.

The ward brightened.

Bolts launched from concealed positions along the cliffs. Dain’s formation raised shields while Lana’s mages formed barriers over the road. The first impacts shattered against blue and amber light.

Rod gave the signal.

The southern group disappeared behind the slope. Dirk’s archers answered the cliff positions. Valewick began casting toward the landing shelf while other mages protected him.

Blackwater’s circling airships changed direction.

The battle had begun before Renn crossed the boundary of his own property.

Helmar watched the opening movement from a protected platform above the central building. Signal lamps marked the western posts, while colored banners carried orders when interference disrupted communication magic. His officers had prepared overlapping firing positions instead of trusting the first ward to hold.

"The southern slope." Brogan said.

A signal vanished there.

"Expected." Helmar replied. "Let them believe the post mattered."

The abandoned position overlooked a route ending beneath an artificial rockfall. Helmar intended the attackers to spend time clearing it while hidden archers fired from above. Other channels guided intruders toward ground seeded with metal stakes and binding runes.

His defenses had not been created for ordinary thieves. Blackwater concealed too much to rely upon secrecy alone. Years before moving his household, Helmar had prepared for relatives, investigators, or rivals arriving with armed support.

He had not prepared for enemies who could die and return though.

Brogan had proposed attacking the graveyard camp before the battle. Helmar refused. Sending soldiers beyond Blackwater’s boundary would confirm Renn’s claim that they were the aggressors, and destroying unattended supplies would not remove the graveyard. Instead, Helmar ordered scouts to watch every returning group and report how quickly it rejoined the fight.

Below, Valewick’s spell struck the landing shelf anchors.

The first pulse failed to break them. The young mage adjusted his hands, then stopped himself from rebuilding the entire spell. He forced more power through the existing structure. Two anchoring runes flickered out.

One circling airship abandoned its descent. Another attempted to land and found the mooring field pulling unevenly against its hull. Its pilot climbed before the vessel struck a tower.

Lana saw the result and redirected three mages toward the remaining anchors.

The road ward did not fall as quickly. Its surface absorbed arrows and turned direct spells aside. Dain advanced beneath linked shields until his front rank reached the distortion. The barrier pushed against them like a solid wall.

Rod joined the formation.

"Ward team." He called.

Two specialists moved forward under the shields. One drove metal probes into the road while the other traced the barrier’s response. Bolts struck the protection above them. A shield cracked. Its owner shifted backward and another fighter filled the space without waiting for instructions.

The specialists found the first buried anchor.

A concentrated spell shattered it, and one side of the ward collapsed. Rod ordered the front through the opening before Helmar’s crews could redirect power.

The first defenders met them beyond the boundary.

Korran raised the council order and shouted for the Ruskell soldiers to stand aside. Three hesitated. Their officer killed one before the dwarf could lower his weapon.

Renn saw the soldier fall for attempting to obey him. He climbed down from the wagon despite Korran’s warning and stood where Blackwater’s defenders could see him.

"Helmar murders his own guards now." Renn called through the amplifying token. "Surrender, and I will protect you from him."

Several soldiers looked toward one another. None dropped a weapon yet, but Helmar’s officer began shouting to keep their attention forward.

Rod’s formation pressed into the first defensive line.

On the southern slope, the assault group discovered the false route. Instead of clearing the rockfall under fire, its leader withdrew behind cover and sent the information to Rod. The fourth group shifted to another approach rather than reinforcing a failure.

The training field had prepared them for exactly that decision.

As the light faded, neither side possessed a decisive advantage. Rod controlled the broken road ward and enough ground to bring more fighters across the boundary. Helmar still held the compound, heights, and airship shelf. The first bodies lay between them.

When a dead adventurer opened his eyes at the graveyard camp, the quartermaster handed him a replacement kit already marked with his name.

He quickly put the armor on, joined the returning unit, and started back toward Blackwater Reach.

He was not alone. Four other adventurers had revived within minutes of him. One chose to remain after experiencing death for the first time, a decision the camp leader accepted without criticism. The others drew replacement weapons and formed a group for the return march. They carried an updated order from Rod as well as fresh healing supplies.

Helmar’s scouts watched them leave the graveyard.

The report reached Blackwater before midnight: the first people killed on the road were already coming back together and carrying dangerous new weapons
