The returning adventurers reached Rod before sunrise.
They carried replacement weapons, fresh potions, and the memory of dying less than six hours earlier. One fighter had lost a favored spear with his body and now carried a plain weapon from the graveyard stores. He complained once about its balance, then joined the formation assigned to the road.
Rod asked for the camp leader’s report before asking how any of them felt.
"One withdrew." The group’s messenger said. "Four returned. The stores issued everything on the list. No delays."
"Good. Join Dain’s reserve."
No speech welcomed them back. The familiar handling helped more than celebration would have.
Blackwater’s defenders had not attacked during the night. They used the hours to replace broken ward anchors, move barricades behind the road breach, and reinforce positions overlooking the southern slope. Rod’s force did the same. Scouts marked the areas Helmar’s archers controlled, healers treated injuries that had not required resurrection, and the four group leaders revised their assignments.
Dirk returned from the ridge shortly before dawn. "The false southern route connects to a narrow shelf above the compound. Helmar left a path for his own archers."
"Can we use it?" Rod asked.
"Not with an entire group. Six people can climb it without exposing themselves. More will be seen from the western post."
Rod studied the updated map. "Take five. Remove the archers after the road attack begins."
Dirk selected four archers and a light-footed fighter. They left before the eastern sky brightened.
Helmar’s first move came from the air.
The two circling vessels descended along opposite sides of the valley. One carried archers. The other released clay containers fitted with fins, dropping them toward Rod’s position.
"Incoming!"
The first container shattered against the road. Thick gray powder burst upward and clung to armor, shields, and exposed skin. A second landed beside the supply wagons.
Lana pulled wind across the camp before anyone inhaled more than a trace. The powder rolled away from the road in a low cloud.
Nessa examined a coughing fighter. "Not poison. It irritates the eyes and throat."
"They want the barriers disrupted." Lana said.
The archer ship fired into the confusion.
Valewick raised a shield before she ordered him. It formed at the wrong angle to cover the entire road, but the center caught the first volley. Other mages extended protection along both sides.
"Hold that." Lana told him.
"The right edge is exposed."
"Then tell the next mage where to overlap it."
Valewick shouted the correction instead of rebuilding his spell. Amber light joined his blue barrier and sealed the opening.
Rod signaled the road advance.
Dain’s front line crossed the broken ward while the airships concentrated overhead. The fourth group moved toward the landing shelf, using the compound wall to block fire from one vessel. Helmar had expected the road to remain the center of the assault. Rod intended to keep it that way until the other groups reached their positions.
Blackwater’s first barricade consisted of interlocked metal plates anchored into the stone. Narrow gaps allowed defenders to stab and fire without opening the barrier. A gate at the center was wide enough for wagons but reinforced by a ward projector behind it.
Dain stopped outside spear range.
"Hooks."
Two adventurers threw chains over the upper edge. Defenders cut the first and pulled the second inward, dragging its owner toward the wall. Dain caught the man by the back of his armor before he crossed the killing ground.
Rod struck the gate with his axe.
The first blow left a deep mark without breaking it. The second forced the ward to brighten. Bolts and spells concentrated upon him. Dain’s shields closed around Rod, allowing him to strike again.
The gate bent.
Helmar watched from above. "They are spending everything on the road."
Brogan did not answer immediately. A southern signal lamp had failed to report.
"The ridge archers?" Helmar asked.
"No confirmation."
Dirk’s team had reached them.
The fight occurred too far above the compound for Rod to see. Dirk crawled beneath the firing ledge while the four archers waited behind a bend. The hidden path had been built for dwarven defenders and offered handholds at regular intervals. Dirk reached the first position, activated Stealth, and crossed the final open stretch.
He struck the signal operator first.
The other archers turned toward the movement. Dirk’s team fired from the path behind them. The position fell before anyone could warn the compound.
Dirk used the captured signal lamp to send the all-clear pattern toward Blackwater.
Brogan received it and relaxed.
Five minutes later, arrows descended from the ridge into the defenders behind the road barricade.
The attack did not kill many. It forced them to look backward at the worst possible moment.
Rod’s axe broke the gate.
Dain led the front line through. The ward projector discharged when an adventurer struck it, filling the opening with white light. Six attackers fell. Three died before Nessa’s healers could reach them.
The formation continued.
Blackwater’s guards expected the deaths to slow the advance. Instead, the next rank stepped over the empty spaces and forced the defenders away from the broken barricade.
Korran raised the Ruskell banner behind them. "The council removed Helmar. Lower your weapons and leave the line."
A guard threw down his spear.
His officer cut him across the back.
The act broke something the speeches had not. Two soldiers turned upon the officer. Others backed away without surrendering, unwilling to fight either side. Dain ordered his people not to strike anyone leaving the barricade.
Rod’s central group secured the road while the fourth group reached the landing shelf supports. Ward specialists disabled the first stabilizing anchor. The moored airship above it strained against its lines.
Helmar ordered the vessel launched.
Its crew cut the moorings before the engines reached full power. The ship dropped, scraped the tower, and swung over the compound. One support cable snapped across the deck. The pilot managed to climb, but the damaged vessel could no longer land or hold a fighting position.
The second moored ship lifted safely and turned its weapons toward the attackers below.
Valewick saw it before Lana did.
He began a long casting pattern designed to trap the vessel inside a rotating wind barrier. Halfway through, the ship adjusted its course. The spell’s ideal position disappeared.
Valewick broke the pattern and released the gathered power as a direct burst.
The wind struck the ship’s port side. It did not trap the vessel or tear its sails. It forced the pilot to climb abruptly, spoiling the archers’ aim and carrying the ship beyond the compound.
Lana looked at him.
"It was not the spell I intended." He said.
"I know."
That was all the approval he received.
The battle spread through Blackwater’s outer compound. Rod’s groups did not move building by building without purpose. One secured the barracks and offered surrender. Another took the ward station. The southern group cleared the route to the workers’ housing and found it nearly empty.
Helmar’s officers responded by concentrating loyal soldiers around the central building and mine entrance.
Nessa established a treatment area behind the broken barricade. Wounded attackers and surrendering defenders received care in the order their injuries required. She did not ask which side caused the wound before stopping the bleeding.
By midday, eleven adventurers had died. Seven returned to the battlefield with replacement equipment. Two remained at the graveyard after deciding they had done enough. The other two were still traveling back with the next organized group.
Helmar received every report.
"They are returning faster." Brogan said.
"Then destroy the road behind them."
"That traps our own people outside the inner line."
Helmar looked down at the guards withdrawing from the barracks. "If they are outside the line, they have already chosen."
Brogan sent the order.
Charges buried beneath the road detonated after the next returning group crossed. Stone collapsed into the ravine, severing the easiest route between Blackwater and the graveyard.
The explosion killed Helmar’s wounded soldiers lying near the road as readily as Rod’s people.
Surviving defenders saw it happen.
More weapons lowered.
Rod did not need to invent a speech. "Helmar destroyed the retreat with his own people on it. Decide whether you still owe him your life."
An entire unit near the barracks surrendered.
Helmar’s loyalists remained dangerous. They used internal passages, firing slits, and warded doors to slow every advance. A hidden spell beneath the workshop floor killed four adventurers when it collapsed the room into a storage pit. A group of Helmar’s fighters counterattacked the healers and nearly reached Nessa before Dain’s reserve stopped them.
Rod fought where the line threatened to fail. His armor accumulated dents, and blood dried along one side of his face. He refused healing until Nessa threatened to assign someone to follow him.
The final airship attempted another attack near sunset.
Dirk’s captured ridge position gave his archers a clear shot at its upper rigging. Lana’s mages struck the engines while Valewick raised a barrier over the compound below. The pilot withdrew rather than crash upon Helmar’s own soldiers.
Darkness found Renn’s forces holding most of the outer property.
The central building, mine entrance, and eastern barracks remained under Helmar’s control. The road to the graveyard had been destroyed, but Dirk’s scouts found a longer route through the southern slopes. Returning adventurers would lose time, not access.
Rod gathered the group leaders inside the captured ward station.
"We finish the surface tomorrow." He said.
Outside, Blackwater’s soldiers watched another group of people they had killed return beneath Renn’s banner.
Inside the central building, Helmar studied the same arrivals through a narrow window. His officers expected him to produce a new order capable of changing what they had seen. He instead asked how many defenders remained loyal enough to hold the mine entrance.
Brogan gave him the honest number. It was smaller than the count still carrying weapons.
"Move the excavation engineers below." Helmar said. "Destroy every record we cannot carry and prepare the lower charges."
"If we collapse the mine approach, we may bury the route we spent years clearing."
"We collapse it after we pass."
Brogan understood. Helmar was no longer planning solely to defend Blackwater. He was preparing somewhere to retreat.
In the captured ward station, Renn heard the same possibility from Korran. The older dwarf pointed to the concentration of guards around the mine and the steady movement of crates through its entrance.
"He values whatever is below more than the property above it." Korran said.
Renn touched the protected ring box beneath his clothing. "Then when the surface falls, he will not surrender."
Rod looked toward the dark mine opening across the compound.
"No." He said. "He will go deeper before them."
