Chapter 84: Chapter 79: Gunshot

Lin Xiaojun stared at the toy car at his feet, utterly confused.

"Who kicked it?"

His two teammates froze.

"Kick what?"

Lin Xiaojun looked at the toy car again. He noticed its cargo bed seemed heavy, as if it were piled high with something. In the camera mounted on the front, a small red dot stared back at him.

Suddenly, an overwhelming sense of danger washed over Lin Xiaojun, originating from right under his feet.

’This is bad!’

Lin Xiaojun instinctively dove to the side.

BOOM!!!

A ball of fire erupted where Lin Xiaojun had just been standing. The remote-controlled tracked vehicle exploded into pieces, and the blast of fire and shrapnel instantly engulfed the three men at the doorway.

The deafening explosion resounded throughout the entire residential complex!

The violent shockwave slammed into the main entrance of Building One and crashed against the wall. Spiderweb cracks radiated across the hard concrete.

Behind the entrance, Shen Xinyi, who had been panicking moments before, was long gone.

The sound of the explosion sent the zombies that hadn’t yet been cleared out into a frenzy, and they began to pound furiously on the glass.

But this time, the streets outside the complex... were completely deserted.

In the underground parking garage, a few zombies frantically pounded on three sealed gates, beating their hands until the bones were exposed, but the three gates didn’t budge an inch.

When the smoke from the explosion finally cleared, a heavily injured Lin Xiaojun tried to stand, enduring the excruciating pain. But his legs wouldn’t move at all; the bones in his feet had been blown clean out.

His lower body was a gruesome mess of wounds and shrapnel.

If not for his last-second dive, he would have been blown in half.

Meanwhile, his two accomplices, who had paid the toy car no mind, were lying motionless on the ground.

"AAAAHH!!!"

Roaring, Lin Xiaojun pushed himself up with his arms, lifting his head to look ahead.

Just then, six figures in full body armor emerged from the smoke swirling around Building Two, walking out at a brisk pace.

They looked like special forces soldiers.

"But... how!?"

Lin Xiaojun had no idea what he’d done wrong. How could these people, who had clearly never met him, have predicted his every move?

’I ran into Building Three the day the apocalypse started and have been so careful never to show my face. How did those college kids know I’d be coming out of Building 3 right at this moment???’

Just then, Yu Dong led his group over to Lin Xiaojun. He took off his helmet and looked down at him.

"Lin Xiaojun, you’ve lost again..."

Lin Xiaojun stared blankly.

"Do I know you?"

Gritting his teeth, he craned his neck to look up at Yu Dong from the ground. That face... he had watched it countless times over the past few days, and he absolutely did not recognize it!

Yu Dong looked directly into Lin Xiaojun’s eyes. They held no sorrow for his defeat, nor even much hatred. Instead, they were filled with... profound confusion.

Lin Xiaojun simply couldn’t comprehend how Yu Dong had done it.

Yu Dong looked at the crippled Lin Xiaojun. There wouldn’t even be a chance for a close-quarters fight like in his past life. The man’s life was a candle flickering in the wind.

"That’s not important. It’s time for you to go."

Yu Dong had no intention of wasting words on him. He raised his spear and aimed it directly at Lin Xiaojun’s head.

’Villains always die because they talk too much,’ Yu Dong thought. ’As for the reasons... I’ll tell him after he’s dead.’

Trembling, Lin Xiaojun tried to roll over to face Yu Dong, but his injuries were so severe that even this simple movement was an immense struggle.

However, just as Yu Dong was about to thrust his spear down, he glanced at the other two bodies on the ground. Frowning, he pulled the spear back.

"Wait... there’s someone else!"

"Lin Xiaojun, where’s the other one?"

Shaking, Lin Xiaojun managed to roll over onto his back, gasping for air.

Finally, he no longer had to crane his neck to look up at Yu Dong.

That, to him, was important.

"Who?"

"The one who saved you!"

Lin Xiaojun’s pupils contracted. "How did you know someone saved me? How do you know everything!"

"Because you... you’re not capable enough to escape an encirclement of five zombies on your own."

At this, the others also removed their helmets, taking deep breaths of fresh air.

The moment Zhao Youcai and Huang Zhiqiang’s faces were revealed, Lin Xiaojun pointed at them and shouted:

"It was you!? Your own classmates... You did it on purpose! Who are you people? Why are you targeting me?"

Lin Xiaojun’s gaze toward Yu Dong and his group was filled with terror. It was a fear of the uncanny. These college students in front of him had seen right through him!

’On the day the outbreak started, two burly college students came to the security room, demanding to see the surveillance footage to find out who sealed the main gate. He’d checked... and it turned out to be their own group of students!’

’They were the thieves crying "Stop, thief!" And then... he got surrounded by zombies.’

’It was all too deliberate!’

’If that person hadn’t shown up...’

"Where is he?"

Yu Dong’s cold gaze was fixed on Lin Xiaojun.

’That person... is dangerous!’

When Yu Dong was burying Xufeng the day before yesterday, he discovered that the fatal wound wasn’t from blunt-force trauma, like a baseball bat. It was a stab wound from a sharp blade to the back of the head.

A dagger, driven through the back of the skull. A single, fatal blow.

The wound was incredibly precise!

’That’s definitely not something an ordinary person could do!’

The other two zombies, however, had been killed by blunt-force trauma—from the very metal baseball bat Lin Xiaojun carried.

In other words, someone else had helped Lin Xiaojun quickly kill the zombified Xufeng that day, and then escaped with him.

’And for someone with that kind of skill to be in the property management office at that exact time... I can only think of one person!’

’The stalker who climbed over the wall right before the apocalypse!’

’He didn’t turn!’

’And he saved Lin Xiaojun!’

And Lin Xiaojun’s reaction proved Yu Dong’s guess was right.

This person was definitely a top-tier threat. His physical conditioning and combat skills were far beyond those of an amateur brawler like Lin Xiaojun.

As long as that man was on the loose, the entire complex was a danger zone.

’I still don’t understand why he was stalking me before the apocalypse. Who is he?’

Yu Dong scanned his surroundings. Beneath the dissipating smoke, the complex was eerily empty...

Seeing the tense look on Yu Dong’s face, Lin Xiaojun burst out laughing.

"You’re afraid of him too, aren’t you? Hahahaha! You’re afraid of him... Hahaha!"

"Tell me where he is, and I’ll make it quick."

"Fine! First, you tell me why you’re targeting me! Why you know so much about me! Tell me everything you know, and I’ll tell you where he is... AAAAAHH!"

Yan Yikai strode forward and stomped on his shattered leg, grinding his tactical boot into the wound. Lin Xiaojun’s face twisted into a pained, savage mask, veins bulging on his forehead.

"Enough with the bullshit! When our boss asks you a question, you answer! Or we’ll torture you to death! You wanted to take Building One from us? Who the hell do you think you are?"

When Yan Yikai finally lifted his foot, a weakened Lin Xiaojun was drenched in sweat, his face deathly pale.

Yu Dong looked coldly at Lin Xiaojun, who in this life was no better than a half-dead dog on the ground.

"Talk."

After taking a few ragged gasps of air, Lin Xiaojun coughed up a great mouthful of blood, mixed with pieces of his internal organs.

Feeling his life slipping away and seeing the people circled around him, Lin Xiaojun knew he wasn’t going to make it.

"You... *cough, cough*... lean in close. I’ll only tell you."

Hearing this, Yan Yikai leaned down, yanked the limp form of Lin Xiaojun up, and delivered two hard slaps across his face. SMACK! SMACK!

"Still trying to pull shit!"

PFFT!

A muffled pop echoed out, and a bloody hole appeared on Yan Yikai’s forehead.
