Edge of the Apocalypse

Chapter 85 - 80: Capturing the Lone Wolf Alive

Chapter 85: Chapter 80: Capturing the Lone Wolf Alive

The moment he saw the bloody hole in Yan Yikai’s head, Yu Dong’s mind went blank.

But as Yan Yikai collapsed, a black pocket pistol appeared from behind him, aimed directly at Yu Dong.

The moment he saw the small, pitch-black barrel, Yu Dong’s world seemed to freeze. Adrenaline surged through him, his breathing grew ragged, and his heart pounded wildly.

Snapping out of his stupor, his brain instantly processed what was happening, and he kicked out at Lin Xiaojun’s hand.

"Gun!"

Pew~

The pistol spat fire, the bullet striking Yu Dong square in the chest.

Yu Dong staggered for a moment, but his combat boot still slammed viciously into Lin Xiaojun’s wrist.

SNAP!

Lin Xiaojun’s wrist snapped back, and the pistol was sent flying.

"AHHH!!!"

Lin Xiaojun screamed in pain, and a moment later, Yu Dong tackled him, pinning him firmly to the ground.

Zhao Youcai, Huang Zhiqiang, and Zhou, who were behind him, finally reacted, rushing over to restrain Lin Xiaojun’s hands and head.

Behind them, the masked ’Liu Ye’ye’ stumbled back a few steps in apparent shock.

"Dongzi, are you okay?!" Huang shouted.

Yu Dong felt his chest. There was just a dull, aching pain; the tactical suit was bulletproof.

"I’m fine... First, check on Kai."

Yu Dong let go, leaving Lin Xiaojun for the others to control. He gathered the collapsed Yan Yikai into his arms, only to see his wide, disbelieving eyes and the bloody hole between his brows...

Just then, the main door of Building One opened behind them. Shen Xinyi ran out carrying a medical kit, followed by Liu Ye’ye with a remote control.

"Lay him down! Let me!"

Shen Xinyi hurried over and knelt on the ground, pulling out one medical instrument after another in an attempt to save Yan Yikai. But... it was all futile.

Yan Yikai was dead.

By the doorway, Liu Ye’ye’s remote control slipped from her hand and clattered to the ground. She clamped a hand over her mouth, unable to believe that Yan Yikai, so full of life just moments ago, was now a corpse.

"*Cough, cough*... Pathetic. I only managed to take out one kid... You guys are ruthless, making a child take a bullet for you."

Lin Xiaojun had given up resisting. The excruciating pain wracking his body had extinguished his will to live; he just wanted to die quickly.

Yu Dong picked up the black pocket pistol from the ground, suppressing the urge to run Lin Xiaojun’s damn head through with his spear.

"This isn’t yours. The person who saved you... did you kill them?"

"Heh... You think saving my life gives you the right to lord it over me? I couldn’t sleep at night knowing he was alive... *cough, cough, cough!*"

Lin Xiaojun’s injuries were worsening. The earlier explosion had not only crippled his legs and feet but had also caused severe internal trauma. At this point, he was running purely on adrenaline.

With his last hope of turning the tables gone, his desire to live vanished. But there was one thing he hadn’t done yet, and he felt his life would be incomplete without it.

"Give me a cigarette, and I’ll tell you how I finished him off... *cough, cough*..."

Lin Xiaojun had no intention of taking his "glorious achievement" to the grave. He wanted to use the time it took to smoke one cigarette to teach these college kids a lesson, to show them what a true...

SQUELCH!

Yu Dong thrust his spear straight through Lin Xiaojun’s head.

"Shameless thug!"

That was Yu Dong’s two-word evaluation of Lin Xiaojun.

To kill one’s own savior and then brag about it—there was nothing but pure evil in this man. He had no reason to be allowed to live.

After killing Lin Xiaojun, Yu Dong lifted Yan Yikai’s body, biting his lower lip so hard it trembled. His eyes began to mist over.

Every moment they had spent together over the past nine days flashed before his eyes.

The 17-year-old high schooler had been the most resilient of the five people he’d saved. He never complained, always remained positive, and threw himself into helping the team survive...

"I have a feeling you guys aren’t bad people. There must be a reason you were looking for me..."

"Please let me join your team! I can do anything!"

"Whoa, is that a budget Captain America shield? Brother Dong, you’re a badass!"

"Enough with the chatter! Just answer our leader’s questions!"

"..."

Yan Yikai had integrated into the team faster than anyone. Yu Dong trusted him, even telling him about his rebirth... Yu Dong had thought they would make it to the very end together, to the day the military finally cleared Yanhai City.

’Kai... I failed to protect you...’

The pocket pistol that Lin Xiaojun had hidden had taken his friend from him.

CRASH! SMASH! CRASH!!!

Windows on Buildings Two and Three shattered one after another as zombies began leaping from above.

"Dongzi! Zombies!" Huang Zhiqiang yelled.

Just like in his previous life, the massive explosion had sent all the remaining zombies in the complex into a frenzy. Even those with arms and legs broken from the fall still writhed and shrieked as they charged toward the group.

The only difference was that this time, there was no tide of zombies pouring from the underground garage. Many of the zombies outside the complex had already been cleared, so there was no major disturbance from beyond the walls.

Yu Dong gently laid Yan Yikai down and said to Shen Xinyi and Liu Ye’ye, "You two take him back inside. We’ll deal with the zombies."

"Okay! Be careful!"

Liu Ye’ye looked at Yu Dong with concern. Meanwhile, Shen Xinyi shouted at the other ’Liu Ye’ye’ in the tactical suit, "Get back here! What are you standing there gawking for?!"

Hearing this, Yang Yi quickly ran inside Building One.

The three women dragged Yan Yikai’s body back into the building. The zombies still hadn’t reached them...

The fall from the upper floors had left them horribly mangled—a mess of limping, hobbling, and crawling bodies.

Yu Dong looked at this ragtag army of broken zombies and raised his compound crossbow.

"Take them out!"

WHOOSH!

An arrow found its mark in the nearest zombie’s skull—a one-shot kill!

Huang Zhiqiang, Zhao Youcai, and Zhou charged out after him.

Huang Zhiqiang barreled straight into a zombie, knocking it to the ground. He then drew a tactical knife from his belt and plunged it into the creature’s head. SPLAT!

The zombie’s reaching hand only managed to leave a faint, bloody smear on Huang Zhiqiang’s tactical suit.

Behind Huang Zhiqiang, Zhou and Zhao Youcai thrust their spears at the limping zombies.

The reach of their long weapons allowed them to dispatch the zombies before they could even get close.

Yu Dong channeled all his grief and anger into a desire for slaughter, loosing one arrow after another...

At such close range, his accuracy was nearly perfect. The immense kinetic energy of the compound crossbow drove the bolts deep, violently pulping the zombies’ brains.

With no other threats, the four of them only had to deal with the zombies that had fallen into the courtyard. Even without using cover, it was a one-sided massacre.

Earlier, they hadn’t moved at all within the smoke, waiting for the person Yu Dong mentioned to appear. Their stamina was at its peak.

Just then, a zombie that had jumped from the second floor landed almost completely unharmed. It sprinted toward Zhou with surprising agility and speed.

Without a skirmisher to cover their flank, the zombie was attacking from the group’s blind spot.

WHIRR-CLICK-CLICK-CLICK~

A silver robot dog shot forward on its four wheels, intercepting the zombie.

Strapped to its top was a protruding high-voltage taser.

BZZZZT!

It intercepted the zombie mid-stride.

THUD!

The shock sent the zombie’s muscles into a violent spasm before going limp. It collapsed to the ground, black foam frothing at its mouth...

"Toward Building Three, in front of the robot dog. It needs a finishing blow."

Liu Ye’ye’s voice came through their earpieces.

Yu Dong put a crossbow bolt into the downed zombie, and it stopped twitching for good.

They had already tested it and knew that electrocuting zombies was a viable tactic.

However, the method could only temporarily incapacitate a zombie, not kill it. It always required a follow-up strike, otherwise the creature would just get back up and attack again.

After taking down one zombie, the robot dog continued to patrol the area, drawing the attention of other zombies and tasing them one by one.

It was a temporary substitute for Yan Yikai’s role as a skirmisher, but its limitations were obvious. The robot dog’s agility and battery life were both finite.

By the time they were exhausted, they had finally dealt with all the zombies that had fallen into the courtyard.

The moment the last one fell, before Yu Dong could even catch his breath, a voice came through his earpiece.

"Brother Dong, I got him! Just as you thought, a lone wolf."

Yu Dong glanced toward Building Two.

"Bring him out..."

This should have been a moment of triumph, but he couldn’t bring himself to smile.
