Rachel lay on the bed as she watched her father pick up her dolls lying carelessly around the room.

“I had fun today, Daddy.”

“Oh!” A deep masculine voice responded back. There was a pause before the voice came again, this time with a gentler tone.

“Want to tell Daddy how you spent your day?”

“Yay!”

Rachel ranted and ranted, yet no matter how long she spoke, her daddy replied with a smile, while occasionally throwing a question here and there.

Rachel felt a bit weird though. Her father never directly faced her. She could hear his laugh, and almost feel his smile. But his face always seemed to escape her notice.

She pouted. “My mouth is paining me. I want to hear a story.”

“Haha… is that so?”

She watched with expectation as her father arranged her small reading table.

Suddenly, her father's head swiveled one hundred and eighty degrees, his face finally turning in her direction.

“I have just the perfect story for you.”

Rachel's young mind seemed to blank out, as she watched the face of the young boy wearing the body of her father.

But when the lips of that strangely familiar face pulled so unnaturally backward to reveal a grin filled with empty darkness, while black blood leaked from the sides of his nightmarish eyes, her mind seemed to snap back to reality.

“AAAAAAAH!”

Rachel woke up with a jolt.

Haa. Haa. Haa.

She panted roughly, cold sweat coating her features, and her spine tingling with a receding chill.

The boy at her side looked at her weirdly while gripping the assault rifle in his hand.

Rachel ignored his gaze and took a long breath. After a short while, she was able to regain her composure. It was then a voice resounded in her mind.

[Another nightmare?]

The voice sounded strangely male, strangely because she felt it could only come from a man, yet it was just so soft and gentle that she couldn't be sure. Not to mention that it was magnetic, seeming to tug directly at her soul every time she heard it.

Yet, while her mind interpreted it in such a way, her body reacted differently.

Rachel felt as if she was standing directly at the edge of an endless abyss, one that was out to devour her soul whole. There was this instinctive primal terror clawing at her mind, and a suffocating dread that seeped into her bones.

[You are overreacting.]

Hearing these words, Rachel's hazel eyes flashed with rage. The bags under her eyes showed she was yet to catch a wink of sleep. And that was the truth.

She had not slept for two days straight.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the image of that boy, whose life she had unrighteously taken. She could almost taste his confusion, his heartache. She could almost still hear that word, one that conveyed a feeling of betrayal.

Why?

-Sniff!

She had thought she had no more tears to give. '

'Guess I was wrong.'

The strange voice didn't come this time. For some reason, every time she broke down like this, it would always disappear. Almost as if it was giving her space. As for whether it came with good intentions, Rachel wasn't sure.

She had heard the voice for the first time just a few moments before the second night event. It was why she had seemed so out of it when Elena had suddenly offered to help protect her.

And it was this same strange voice that kept whispering to her as she watched her fellow students die, picked off one by one by those hulking zombies.

It told her she would face the same fate. No, it promised her she would experience a more gruesome end, almost as if it could envision her future.

She would die!

The words had almost overwhelmed her. They suffocated her, filled her with such dread that she had walked listlessly through the massacre unfolding around her.

Then, the voice came again.

This time, with a solution. With the only way to change her fate.

She had to kill. She had to take a life. That was the only way for her to level up. It was the only means for her to grow stronger.

But how could she face those monstrous undead? The top of her head could barely reach their torsos, and just a wave of their claws could effortlessly turn her into blood smeared on the ground.

So…

The image of those dimming eyes flashed in her mind once more. She raised a trembling hand and wiped off her tears.

“Hey, why are you crying? Are you sure you are okay?”

The words seemed to roll past her, Rachel not even registering them.

It was then that magnetic voice resounded in her mind once more.

[Hey, your crush is coming.]

Rachel froze for a moment. Then she quickly wiped her face and brought her gun into her hands.

‘I do not like him.’

[Haha… you cannot lie to me, girl. He is everything the prince charming you have always wished for. He is not bad-looking. He is surrounded by people who care for him, unlike yourself who has been alone for years. Most importantly, he has the power you envy. He's not like you. Weak, frail, useless…]

“SHUT UP!” Rachel suddenly roared out, earning a weird glance from the boy at her side. The male student cautiously shifted and created more distance between them.

It was only now Rachel realized that she hadn't shouted in her mind, but had rather spoken loudly.

But it was too late.

A boy suddenly appeared at the doorway they were guarding. Dressed in simple sweats and a T-shirt, with two distinctive earrings on both ears, the boy's dark-as-night eyes fell on her for a moment, for just a split second, before moving past her as if she was air.

[Haa… the ignorance of the weak. Just look at him go, posing over a bit of power.]

[Tut Tut Tut… I bet he would shit his pants if he met those aberrant undead out there. The only reason he and your entire group are safe is because of the aura of that anomaly upstairs, surrounding this entire region.]

Rachel didn't even hear what the voice said. Her eyes fixed on Kael as he ignored her and walked into the room.

Even now, she didn't know what she had done to earn his ire.

“Hey, stop right there!”

Rachel was pulled back to reality when she saw the male survivor guarding the doorway with her suddenly raise his firearm and point it at Kael.

It was then Kael removed his hands lazily resting within the pockets of his sweatpants.
