I turned my head back toward the fight just in time to watch Val finish her bloody masterpiece.
Only the earth-shaper and the spear-wielding leader remained. Panic had completely overridden their tactical discipline. The earth-shaper desperately hurled massive boulders of condensed rock at Val, screaming in terror.
Val didn’t even bother dodging. She walked forward at a steady, unhurried pace, letting the boulders phase harmlessly through her misty, intangible form. The psychological terror of watching an unkillable shadow-reaper slowly walk through solid stone broke the earth-shaper’s mind. He turned to run.
Val raised her left hand. A tendril of solid darkness shot out from her fingertips, wrapping tightly around the fleeing man’s ankle. With a sharp tug, she dragged him backward across the rough stone, silencing his screams with a swift, brutal downward strike of her scythe.
Only the leader was left. The man backed away, his hands trembling as he held the sensory-jamming spear out like a desperate shield. "W-What the hell are you?! You’re just a stadium bodyguard!"
Val stopped five feet away from him. Her dark suit was completely immaculate, not a single drop of blood or speck of dust marring her clothes. She stared at him with eyes so cold and devoid of human emotion that it sent a shiver down my spine. It was a jarring contrast to the cute, blushing girl who had been awkwardly dancing to pop music just twenty minutes ago.
"I am the shield of the Fernando family," Val stated, her voice chillingly flat.
The leader let out a terrified roar, lunging forward with a desperate, glowing thrust of his spear.
Val side-stepped the thrust with bored, calculated precision. She didn’t use her scythe this time. Instead, her bare right hand shot forward, grabbing the man by the throat with bone-crushing force. She lifted his struggling body entirely off the cavern floor with one arm.
Dark, suffocating Soulshade mana flooded from her grip, directly invading the man’s spiritual pathways. His eyes rolled into the back of his head, his struggles weakening rapidly as Val crushed his spiritual core with overwhelming pressure.
With a final, sickening crunch, she snapped his neck, tossing his lifeless body to the side like a discarded ragdoll.
The cavern fell into an eerie silence, save for the faint, distant thumping of the concert above.
Val exhaled a slow, quiet breath. The massive, terrifying shadow scythe dissolved back into her hand, morphing seamlessly into her sleek combat dagger before she slid it back into her thigh holster.
She turned around, her violet eyes scanning the cavern until they landed on me kneeling next to the defused bomb. Instantly, the cold, emotionless assassin vanished. Her rigid posture softened, a look of genuine concern flashing across her face as she hurried to my side.
"Are you alright, Seth?" Val asked, her voice returning to its usual soft, respectful tone as she knelt beside me, thoroughly checking me for injuries. "The bomb’s core did not leak any volatile radiation during the defusal?"
"I’m perfectly fine, Val," I said with a smile, standing up and brushing the dust off my knees. "The bomb is completely dead. Honestly, you made sure none of them even got close to me."
"I looked at the five bodies scattered across the cavern, then back at my bodyguard, a wide, impressed grin spreading across my face.
"I gotta say, Val..." I chuckled, patting her shoulder. "..that was the most badass thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. You completely demolished them."
Hearing my unabashed praise, Val froze. The lethal, untouchable shadow-reaper who had just slaughtered an elite hit squad without breaking a sweat immediately looked down at the ground, her cheeks flushing a bright, embarrassed pink.
"I... I was merely performing my duties, Young Master," Val murmured, awkwardly adjusting her suit jacket. "It was nothing special."
I laughed out loud, shaking my head at the absurdity of her dual personality.
The dark, damp cavern fell into a quiet stillness, broken only by the faint hum of residual mana and the distant, muffled echoes of the stadium above.
I looked around at the five lifeless cultist bodies scattered across the limestone floor, then turned to Val, rubbing the back of my neck. "You know, Val... you kind of killed all of them pretty fast. Wouldn’t it have been better to keep one alive to interrogate them about who hired them to plant a magical bomb?"
Val adjusted her suit jacket, her posture returning to its usual immaculate, stoic form. She gave a subtle shake of her head. "It was unnecessary, Young Master. Mercenaries of this tier are merely low-level disposal units; they are rarely entrusted with the true identity of their primary benefactor. Furthermore, I possess far more efficient investigative methods to trace their spiritual signatures back to their origin. Keeping losers like them alive would only pose an unnecessary risk to your safety."
I gave a dry chuckle, nodding in agreement. "Fair enough."
I stepped over to the metal pillar, picking up the unexploded, inert blue mana core in one hand and reaching down to pick up the bandaged, sensory-jamming spear with the other. My initial intention was to carry both dangerous artifacts straight back up to the surface and hand them over to Father.
However, as I stood there in the quiet cavern, looking up at the high stone ceiling, a sudden sense of calm washed over me. The sweet, lingering memory of Yerin’s final love song echoed softly in my head, bringing a warm, relaxed smile to my face.
I set the unexploded bomb and the spear down against a flat rock near the tunnel entrance, turning around to face my stoic bodyguard.
"Hey, Val?" I asked casually, leaning back against a stalagmite.
Val snapped to attention, her violet eyes locking onto mine. "Yes, Seth?"
"When I head off to Avalon Academy soon... are you going to accompany me there too?"
Though a subtle flicker of confusion passed through her eyes, Val answered without a second of hesitation, her voice carrying absolute certainty.
"Since Lord Julian and Lady Alice have assigned me as your personal head of security, my duty is to remain by your side wherever you travel. Avalon Academy’s international charter explicitly permits Awakened students to bring a small entourage of personal retainers and bodyguards. I will be accompanying you to the academy."
