When I glided down to the ground floor of the stadium complex, I spotted Val standing near the central VIP security checkpoint, her sharp violet eyes scanning the concourse.
I walked over to her with a warm smile. "Hey, Val. Why are you waiting out here instead of monitoring the central security hub?"
Val turned to me, her stoic posture softening slightly. "Your safety is my highest priority, Seth. Besides, the security grid is completely automated and locked down,.nothing escapes our wards. On top of that, both Lord Alistair Rothschild and Lord Julian Fernando are currently inside the VIP skybox. No sane faction would dare cause trouble today."
I nodded in agreement, a dry smirk touching my lips. "Yeah, fair enough. Having two absolute powerhouses in the building is a pretty solid deterrent."
As the two of us began walking toward the VIP elevators, a sudden thought crossed my mind. "Hey, Val... do you know where Dylan is right now?"
Val immediately pulled out her sleek digital tablet, her long fingers tapping across the screen to pull up the live CCTV feeds. Within two seconds, she pointed to a high-definition video feed.
"He is currently on the ground floor, standing right in front of the eastern wing vending machine,’ Val reported.
I took one look at the tablet screen and let out a genuine, amused laugh. That was the exact same vending machine where I had first met the little guy.
"Come on," I grinned, gesturing for her to follow. "Let’s go say hi."
We walked down the wide administrative corridor until I spotted Dylan standing in front of the brightly lit vending machine, staring intently at the rows of chocolate bars inside.
Grinning mischievously, I tiptoed up behind him, bent down slightly, and let out a sharp, playful shout. "BOO!"
WHOOSH!
Dylan jumped a foot into the air.
In a split second of pure instinct, the little guy spun around, whipped a small canister of pepper spray out of his jacket pocket, and aimed it straight at my face, pressing the nozzle without a moment of hesitation.
TSSST!
Thanks to my heightened senses and reality manipulation, time practically slowed down. I casually swayed my head two inches to the left, letting the mist spray harmlessly through the empty air behind me.
Dylan blinked, his wide eyes finally registering my face. His jaw dropped, and he hurriedly stuffed the pepper spray back into his pocket, his face turning bright red. "B-Big brother Seth! I’m so sorry! I didn’t know it was you."
I waved my hand casually, letting out a warm laugh. "It’s fine, kid! Nice reflexes, though!"
Internally, I couldn’t help wondering what kind of rough childhood the little guy must have had to reflexively carry pepper spray in his pocket and draw it like a Wild West gunslinger.
’Atleast that music isn’t playing...’
[Want me to? I can also bring out the hay...]
’Nah.’
I reached out, playfully ruffling his dark hair. "So... did you come all the way back here just to hoard more chocolate?"
Dylan shook his head, looking up at me with earnest dark eyes. "No... I was waiting for you."
I paused. "Waiting for me?"
"I didn’t have your phone number or any way to call you," Dylan explained softly, rubbing the back of his neck. "So I remembered this vending machine and hoped that if I stood here long enough, you’d come back to get a snack so we could meet again."
Hearing his innocent explanation, a sharp pang of guilt hit my chest. The kid had literally been standing by a vending machine, just hoping to run into me. It was my fault for running away like that last time.
I immediately crouched down to his eye level, looking him straight in the eyes. "I’m sorry, Dylan. I should have given you my contact info earlier. Here, let me add my number to your phone so you can call or text me whenever you want."
Dylan’s face instantly lit up with pure joy as we swapped contact details. "It’s okay, big brother! You’re an adult like my mom, and adults are always super busy with work so kids like me can enjoy life!"
I stared at the boy for a moment, genuinely struck by the quiet maturity behind those innocent eyes.
Just then, Dylan peeked past my shoulder and spotted Val standing quietly behind me. His eyes widened in delight, and he waved enthusiastically. "Hi, Miss Valerie!"
I raised an eyebrow in surprise, looking back at my usually stoic, intimidating bodyguard. "Wait a minute... did you two become friends while I was gone?"
Dylan nodded happily, grinning. "Yup! Big brother was totally right, Miss Valerie looks super scary on the outside, but she’s really sweet on the inside!"
Val’s rigid posture softened completely. A faint, sweet smile touched her lips as she took a step forward, gently resting her hand on Dylan’s head and giving him a soft, caring pat, communicating her affection without needing a single word.
I smiled at the wholesome sight, turning back to Dylan. "So, Dylan... are you watching the concert with your mom today, or do you have another spot?"
"My mom is super busy backstage managing the audio production," Dylan answered. "But she booked me a reserved seat in the upper section."
"Why sit alone in a regular section?" I grinned, standing back up and patting his shoulder. "Want to come watch the concert with me in the VIP skybox?"
Dylan thought about it for a moment, his eyes sparkling with excitement before he vigorously nodded. "Yes! I’d love to!"
"Awesome. Let’s go," I said with a smile, leading the way with Dylan and Val as we headed toward the central VIP elevators on the ground floor concourse.
As we walked through the grand main lobby, the area was bustling with high-society guests, international diplomats, and staff moving about.
Suddenly, I noticed the crowd ahead naturally parting to make way.
Walking down the center of the hall was a breathtaking woman with long, flowing silver hair that shimmered like liquid moonlight. She possessed piercing golden eyes, and she was surrounded by a squad of sleek, pitch-black armored bodyguards who radiated immense, suffocating pressure.
