Clyde underwent treatment for several days under the intensive care of the fortress healers. The wounds across his body gradually closed under repeated applications of healing magic, but the deeper damage within his muscles and organs took considerably longer to recover.
Mina, Sean, Connor, and Ray were still unconscious throughout most of that time.
But Ray had already awakened several times and he had immediately become frantic. He had thrashed against the bed, shouted incoherently, and attempted to force himself up despite his injuries.
The healers and a few fighters were eventually forced to restrain him with reinforced straps whenever he woke. Clyde had watched him from his own bed more than once.
That kid was unstable, he knew that. Clyde could sense the Demon energy within his body from the beginning. It was not simply a trace of corruption. The energy had already become deeply intertwined with his existence.
He was not a good person either. Clyde had noticed it from the beginning. There was something twisted about the way Ray behaved, something that made it difficult to trust him completely.
But he was strong. That was what was important. As long as Ray remained weaker than him, Clyde could keep him under control when necessary.
Clyde’s first priority was recovering fully from his wounds. After that, he needed to decide what he would do next.
There were several things he needed to accomplish. First, he needed to speak with Maethion. He needed to convince the elf that he was Clyde.
If Maethion believed him, Clyde could gain access to the same support he had once received from him. More importantly, he could begin rebuilding the connections he had in his previous life.
Then there was the Ancient One. The Outer God had somehow caused his reincarnation after his death. But after bringing him back, the Ancient One had fallen completely silent. It had not spoken to him again. Clyde did not believe that was meaningless.
After that, he would probably need to enter the inner circle of the Council that governed Sivagadh Fortress.
The fortress was not really a fortress in the conventional sense. It was a hidden world. A miniature world concealed from the eyes of the Higher Beings.
Survivors from countless worlds destroyed by the Selection Stage had been gathered here. Some had arrived with entire groups. Others had come alone after losing everyone they knew.
Buildings from completely different civilizations stood beside one another. Ancient castles rose near modern apartment buildings. Medieval stone houses stood beside structures that looked as though they had been taken directly from Earth’s modern cities.
But it all worked. People lived beside one another without much conflict.
They had all suffered through the same kind of destruction. They had all watched their worlds collapse. Compared to the horrors they had escaped, minor disagreements seemed meaningless.
So they had built a life together. A strange one, perhaps, but peaceful.
The System could not be used within Sivagadh Fortress. But people could still train their bodies. They could still train their magic power and become stronger.
Clyde had also heard that Leon and his team had already died during an expedition outside the fortress. It was a shame. Leon had been one of the people Clyde had once saved. It seems like they had not been as lucky as he was.
Clyde remained silent as the thought passed through his mind.
Then the healers arrived again. They checked his condition, examined the wounds that remained, and applied another dose of healing magic throughout his body.
Clyde thanked them before lying back down. Then he rested again. That became his routine for the next several days.
—
Several days later, Clyde finally felt strong enough to stand. He slowly pushed himself upright. His body still felt heavy, but the sharp pain was mostly gone. He took several careful steps across the room while one of the healers watched him closely.
After examining him for several minutes, she finally nodded.
"You’re recovered enough to leave," said the healer. Your body still needs rest, but you no longer need intensive treatment. Just don’t do anything reckless."
Clyde smiled faintly. "Thankyou."
He left the infirmary soon after that.
Mina, Sean, Connor, and Ray were still unconscious. Their condition was stable, but none of them had awakened properly yet. Whatever they had experienced during the final battle and the journey through the rift had placed an enormous strain on their bodies.
He stepped outside. The streets of Sivagadh Fortress stretched before him.
People moved through them as they always did. Clyde walked among them without showing anything on his face. Inside, the sight was painfully familiar. But he did not allow any of that to appear on his face. He simply continued walking.
Eventually, he reached a small pond. Clyde stopped. This place was familiar too. In his previous life, he had often sat on one of the benches beside the water.
He walked toward it and sat down. For several minutes he just stared at the surface of the pond and sat there in silence.
Footsteps approached from behind.
Clyde glanced over his shoulder and saw Maethion was walking toward him.
The elf wore his usual composed expression, his glasses resting neatly on the bridge of his nose. There was a smile on his face as he approached.
"Can I sit here?" Maethion asked.
Clyde moved slightly to the side. "Sure."
Maethion sat beside him. For a moment, none of them spoke. Then Maethion glanced at Clyde and said, "You recovered quickly. You seem much stronger than your friends."
Clyde gave a small smile. "Yeah. I think so too."
Maethion chuckled. His eyes were on Clyde for a few seconds before he looked back toward the pond.
"You know, people like you are useful here. You could become the fighters of this fortress. They leave this place and enter Ruined Worlds to gather resources and occasionally deal with threats that could eventually reach us. You’ve already demonstrated that you’re capable. So I was wondering if you would consider becoming one of our fighters?"
Clyde remained silent for a moment. Then he looked back at the pond.
"Let me consider it first."
Maethion gave him an amused smile. "Of course."
Clyde remained silent for another few seconds. Then his expression changed. He slowly turned his head toward Maethion.
"You don’t remember me?"
Maethion froze. The smile vanished from his face.
