Maethion’s eyes remained fixed on Clyde, but they had begun to tremble. His mouth hung slightly open, and the color slowly drained from his face.
Only moments ago, he had been looking at a young survivor who had recently escaped a Selection Stage. A powerful young man, certainly. Someone Maethion had found impressive despite his age. But nothing more than a stranger.
Now, something has changed. Recognition had appeared in Maethion’s mind, and the realization struck him with a huge force that he could barely breathe.
The face in front of him looked different, younger, completely unfamiliar. But the attitude was the same. The presence was the same. Even the faint energy surrounding him carried the feelings that Maethion had known for long.
He knew that presence.
"Clyde?" Maethion finally whispered, his voice trembling.
Clyde smiled. "Yes. It’s me." He had considered this moment for a long time. He did not know whether there would ever be a perfect opportunity to reveal himself. There might not be one. So he had decided that this was good enough.
There was no reason to keep waiting.
"How could you..." Maethion’s voice trailed off. He seemed unable to arrange his thoughts into words. "The battle... You died.."
Clyde nodded calmly. His smile faded slightly. "Yeah. I thought so too. But somehow, I woke up in this boy’s body."
Maethion continued staring at him. There seemed to be a thousand questions inside his head, all fighting for attention at once. Where had Clyde been? How had he survived? Why did he have a different body? How had he returned after being killed by the Higher Beings?
Yet Maethion did not know which question he should ask first.
"Don’t bother asking," Clyde said. "I can’t give you any answers either."
Maethion’s expression tightened.
Clyde continued before he could speak.
"I don’t understand what happened to me. I only know that I’m here now." He leaned back slightly against the bench before looking directly into Maethion’s eyes. "So let’s get straight to the point. My existence here is a secret. And I need your help."
Maethion remained silent. Clyde allowed him to stay that way.
He understood that Maethion needed time to process everything. The elf had just discovered that someone he had believed dead had suddenly appeared in front of him wearing the body of an entirely different person. There was no way he could simply accept that without just like that.
Eventually, Maethion let out a long sigh. If Clyde himself could not give him an explanation, there was little point in forcing him to answer questions he could not answer.
For now, it was better to focus on what mattered.
"What do you need?" Maethion finally asked.
Clyde’s expression became serious. "I need to regain my old strength. I’ve recovered some of it during the Selection Stage but my current level is still far too low. I need to grow stronger quickly."
He paused before giving Maethion a direct look. "Send me to a Ruin. Give me an assignment there so I can raise my level."
Maethion stared at him for several seconds with narrowed his eyes. Then his expression became more concerned.
"Do you intend to take revenge?" he asked quietly. "Are you planning to wage war against the Higher Beings again?"
"Yes." Clyde answered without hesitation. There was no uncertainty in his voice.
Maethion studied his eyes. He saw the determination burning within them.
Clyde had already chosen his path. This was not an impulsive decision made in the aftermath of his resurrection. He had already made up his mind.
But Maethion still could not accept it easily.
"Isn’t that too dangerous? I saw what happened the first time you rebelled alone. They came after you together. The battle nearly destroyed everything around you." His voice became heavier. "You lost someone important. You nearly died yourself. And now you want to do it again?"
Clyde’s expression darkened. His jaw tightened as he looked at Maethion.
"Have you forgotten what they did?"
Maethion said nothing.
"They oppressed us. They treated us like livestock that they could take whenever they wanted." Clyde’s voice remained controlled, but anger had begun to burn beneath his every word. "They tore people away from their lives, their families, and the people they loved. And you think I’m going to let them keep doing that?"
Maethion remained silent.
Clyde looked toward the distant buildings of Sivagadh Fortress. For a moment, he said nothing. Then he spoke again:
"We have to start fighting back, Maethion. We can’t keep hiding forever."
Clyde pushed himself to his feet.
Maethion looked up at him.
"I’ll leave soon," Clyde said. "Give me an assignment in a Ruin. After that, I’ll figure things out myself."
He turned away from the pond.
"Clyde."
Clyde stopped but did not turn around.
Maethion hesitated.
There were countless things he wanted to say. He wanted to say warnings, questions, and arguments. In the end, nothing came out.
Clyde simply continued walking.
His figure gradually disappeared down the street, leaving Maethion alone beside the pond.
The elf remained seated for a long time, staring at the place where Clyde had disappeared.
His mind replayed those words again and again.
"We can’t keep hiding forever."
Maethion lowered his gaze. Perhaps Clyde was right.
But where was Maethion supposed to begin?
He knew he could not simply bring this matter before the Council. The members had become too comfortable with their current existence. Sivagadh Fortress had given them something they had never been able to find: safety.
Here, the Higher Beings could not reach them. Their people could live, recover, raise their children, train, and build new lives without constantly fearing that another disaster would descend upon them.
Most importantly, they had stopped fighting. Even though this place was called The Resistance.
Maethion understand why. After everything they had lost, peace had become more valuable than revenge. The Council would not easily throw that peace away.
He sighed deeply.
"Let’s take this slowly," Maethion muttered. "I can’t act rashly right now."
He looked toward the direction Clyde had disappeared, his expression becoming thoughtful.
"For now, I’ll provide Clyde with whatever help I can quietly."
He would need to be careful. If the Council discovered Clyde’s existence too soon, they might oppose him, or worse, his return could attract the attention of the Higher Beings.
Maethion stood from the bench and adjusted his glasses. He turned and walked in the opposite direction from where Clyde had gone.
