Realizing how poisonous the mist was, Clyde’s expression immediately became stern and solemn. He had no reliable means of countering the poison and unlike in his previous life, his current body could not simply withstand everything thrown at it.
He was not certain that he could survive prolonged exposure. Fighting the wyvern at close range would be too risky.
For now, the safest option was to keep his distance.
Clyde immediately retreated. Lightning flickered around his legs as he jumped from one floating platform to another, rapidly increasing the distance between himself and the wyvern.
The wyvern did not pursue him immediately. Its condition was far from perfect either.
Large portions of the vegetation covering its body had been burned away. Flames continued spreading through the remaining vines and leaves, crawling across its back and wings.
The creature violently shook its body, trying to extinguish them, while smoke rose from several patches of scorched scales. Its earlier arrogance had disappeared.
Clyde watched it carefully. At least he was not the only one having trouble. His opponent was suffering as well.
Clyde remained on a floating platform and waited. He needed to see what the creature would do next.
Would it continue attacking him with that poisonous mist? Or would it decide that fighting him was no longer worth the risk?
The answer came soon. The wyvern suddenly turned around.
Its wings spread wide before it began flying away from the battlefield.
Clyde’s eyes narrowed. Then a faint smirk appeared on his face. He immediately pursued.
Lightning erupted around his legs and Clyde launched himself across the floating ruins. He moved from one broken structure to another, rapidly closing the distance.
The wyvern noticed him. It looked back and opened its jaws. A moment later a thick cloud of green poisonous mist erupted behind it.
Clyde immediately changed direction.
The poisonous cloud swept past him, but a small portion still able to grazed his shoulder and side. His clothes began to dissolve, and a sharp burning sensation spread across his skin.
Clyde gritted his teeth and tried to ignored it. He continued chasing.
The wyvern released another cloud.
Clyde jumped upward and twisted through the air. The mist passed beneath him, eating away at the concrete platform behind him.
Another cloud came. This time, Clyde accelerated forward instead of retreating.
A thin layer of poison brushed against his arm, leaving another painful burn, but he continued moving.
The distance was closing.
Clyde raised his hands, and fire exploded from his palms. Several blazing fireballs shot through the air and struck the wyvern’s back.
Boom!
Flames exploded across its vegetation. The wyvern shrieked and desperately beat its wings.
Clyde followed with lightning. Blue-white bolts shot through the air and struck its burning body, causing his attacks to spread even further.
The vegetation covering its back caught fire, and burning vines fell away as the creature desperately tried to escape.
Clyde did not let up. He kept his distance and continued bombarding it with fire and lightning.
The wyvern twisted through the air, desperately trying to avoid the attacks, but its movements had already become slower. Its wings were damaged, its body was covered in burns, and the poisonous mist was becoming less useful as Clyde adapted to its attacks.
Another fireball struck its wing. The creature screamed, its flight suddenly became unstable.
The wyvern struggled to maintain its altitude before finally losing control.
It then crashed downward, smashed through the roof of a floating building and tore through several floors before finally landing heavily on a wide concrete platform below.
Dust and debris exploded everywhere.
Clyde landed several meters away, his sword already glowing with fire and lightning.
He stared at the fallen wyvern and noticed that it was still alive.
Clyde did not waste any time. The moment the wyvern crashed onto the floating building, he launched himself toward it.
His eyes remained fixed on the shining shard embedded in the creature’s head. The metallic fragment gleamed brightly between the scales, almost as if it were deliberately drawing his attention toward it.
Clyde accelerated. Lightning erupted around his body and surged through his legs. His speed increased sharply, pushing his weakened body beyond what it should have been capable of. His movements consumed more of his remaining magical energy now, but Clyde did not slow down.
He had already spent too much time in this Ruin. He would finish this with one final push!
The wyvern tried to raise its head when Clyde entered its range. Its wings twitched weakly, and its jaws opened, but the creature no longer possessed enough strength to release another meaningful attack.
Clyde appeared beside its head and his sword slashed forward.
Slash!
The blade tore through its neck. Before the wyvern could react Clyde swung again. Another slash opened its scales, followed by a third slash that cut deeply into its chest.
The creature released a weak, desperate shriek.
Clyde stepped forward and drove his sword directly into its chest.
The blade pierced through its scales and sank deep.
Lightning surged through the weapon.
The wyvern’s enormous body convulsed and shriek and struggled. Then it became still.
Clyde slowly pulled his sword free.
Finally, the creature was dead.
He stood there for a moment, breathing heavily while staring at the corpse. His remaining magical energy was dangerously low and his body was covered in burns and scratches from the battle.
His gaze eventually returned to the shining object embedded in the wyvern’s head.
Clyde had expected something like that to be responsible for the creature’s unusual abilities. Or perhaps the Star-Metal Fragment will strengthened its body or granted it some special power in the last moment.
But apparently, that was not the case. The wyvern had been strong because it was simply a powerful creature, and the shard had merely been lodged inside its skull.
Clyde walked toward the corpse.
"Well, this makes things easier," he muttered.
He crouched beside the wyvern’s head and examined the fragment carefully. It was partially embedded between the creature’s scales, its surface shining with a strange metallic brilliance.
Clyde gripped it firmly then he began pulling.
