The series of notifications spammed Kaelen’s vision, momentarily disorienting him, when he suddenly felt a looming danger and twisted himself to the side just as a sword whizzed past him and embedded itself hilt-deep in the wall behind him.
A single swing of a barbarian player’s battle axe dismissed the cloud of dust in the area, and the surviving players’ eyes immediately fell on Black Rose before they followed her gaze to the slime standing at the entrance gate of the 100th floor.
They had all gotten the notification that the Titan had been killed in the explosion, and also received the global announcement about the dungeon tower clear with a list of the players involved and their contributions.
What they never expected was Black Rose coming in second place after pulling the stunt she had to take down the Titan. But most importantly, the name at the top of the leaderboard was someone they’d never heard of.
Everyone had the exact same question...
Who the hell is Kaelen Cross?!
Out of the hundreds of elite players recruited for the expedition, only a few remained standing now after a single attack from a mysterious source. And on seeing the lone slime still standing after it took out the entire floor and the final boss, they weren’t stupid and immediately put two and two together.
From Black Rose’s initial reaction before the explosion to the unprovoked attack on the seemingly harmless slime, as much as it was hard to believe, they were certain of at least one thing.
The slime was an enemy.
An enemy who had taken out an entire boss floor in a single attack that surpassed the accumulated damage of even the star player of the expedition.
There was no doubt about it.
That slime... was Kaelen Cross.
It took a split second for the handful of surviving players to arm themselves and face the new enemy, even more terrifying than the Divine-tier Titan itself.
"Black Rose, tell me this is some sick joke."
"What are you trying to pull here?"
The surviving leaders of the Midnight Paladin Guild and the Crimson Goblins Guild blurted out with ugly expressions.
Black Rose frowned but kept her gaze locked on the unmoving slime standing at the entrance gate.
"That slime is dangerous and should be graded as a national calamity. You witnessed for yourselves how it destroyed the entire floor in a split second—" she was still speaking when another guild leader interrupted her.
"Bullshit! You expect us to really believe that a common slime did this? Without the help of someone?!" another guild leader yelled in rage.
Black Rose’s expression turned ugly, and she snapped her head to glare at the guild leader.
"What are you insinuating?"
She expected the guilds to turn against her now after losing the top spot. It was common knowledge that the player who got the last hit that killed the boss received more rewards and Evolution Points than the rest of the team who contributed to the kill.
It had been decided beforehand that whoever achieved that would have to split those rewards and a percentage of the Evolution Points with the rest of the team, and that person was supposed to be Black Rose. Then suddenly, a common slime showed up and beat her to it. Not to mention she had clearly hesitated in finishing off the Titan before the explosion.
It was only normal for these highly competitive guilds to think she had plotted all this to swindle all the rewards and Evolution Points for herself. But her mistake was choosing a common slime for the job.
Before she could speak, another guild leader turned his weapon toward the rest of them with his back to the slime.
"I don’t care what y’all think, but no one is leaving this room until the imposter gets exposed," the guild leader said with bloodshot eyes. "Because tell me how a fucking slime is capable of blowing up the entire floor and taking out the fucking—"
His words were suddenly cut short, and his expression froze for a moment before the blade-whip sliced through his armor and came out the other side.
The guild leaders stumbled back subconsciously as their pupils shrank to the size of pinholes. They watched the guild leader’s body faceplant onto the floor as the blade-whip retracted back to the slime at the entrance gate.
"It’s nothing personal, but I have to get to the rooftop, and you guys are kinda in the way," Kaelen said calmly as he waved his blade-whip around. "I mean, I don’t mind if y’all step aside and let me through."
As Kaelen said this, he was scrolling through his evolution tree and purchased another evolution attribute sitting right at the bottom of the tree for a staggering ten million Evolution Points.
He never planned to let any of them leave the dungeon alive, as he could either kill them now or devour the entire dungeon before they could make it out of the exit all the way down to the first floor.
His words had only been to rage-bait the guild leaders, though for his next act, he only needed a single scapegoat.
"How dare you?!" a guild leader suddenly exploded in rage, and the box sitting on his back immediately flew open as several swords shot out at an incredible speed, forming a tsunami with a pointed tip that charged straight for Kaelen.
Kaelen immediately shot out blade-whips to intercept the flying swords, but the moment they came into contact, his blade-whips were torn apart and destroyed. The tsunami didn’t stop there, flying straight for Kaelen’s core and forcing him to leap back a considerable distance, exiting the 100th floor before disappearing around a corner.
"Bastard!" the guild leader screamed and immediately mounted one of his flying swords to pursue the slime. Seeing how easy it was to scare away the slime, the other guild leaders immediately chased after it.
After all, whoever killed it would receive everything it got as the fake top scorer.
Everyone except Black Rose made this decision without thinking twice.
"Wait! It’s a trap!" she screamed at them, but they had already disappeared from the 100th floor after the slime.
She gritted her teeth and charged for the entrance gate, pulling her sword out of the wall before rounding a corner that took her down to the 99th floor.
She couldn’t explain how blindly chasing after the slime was a trap, but the fact that it had been so easy to slice apart was proof enough for her, for the same slime she’d witnessed take down a Mythic Dragon and the entire 100th floor with the final boss.
In no time, she’d caught up to the rest of the guild leaders on the 99th floor, but from the looks of it, they’d lost the slime and were standing on guard, looking everywhere for any sign of it.
Something wasn’t right.
Black Rose slowly swept her face across everyone...
One.
Two.
Three...
Then she stopped. Her gaze slowly drifting downwards, her brows furrowed.
"...Guild Leader Babrus."
Everyone turned toward her.
"...Why are your boots on the wrong feet?"
