Evolution Online: My 10,000× Reward System Multiplies Everything
Chapter 32: Assassins and Bounty HuntersThe moment those words left Kaelen’s lips, the housekeeper froze on the spot, and her hand shot up to her neck to touch the hidden tattoo.
She slowly turned to stare at Kaelen, who had an unreadable expression on his face as he stared straight into her eyes.
They both entered a deadlock, when Kaelen suddenly snapped his finger before her face, making her flinch and subconsciously reach into the trolley.
"Are you okay?" Kaelen asked with a raised brow.
The housekeeper paused to stare Kaelen in the eyes, and without seeing any hostility, she visibly relaxed.
"Y-yeah. I’m fine. Thank you," she said and pushed the trolley inside, as Kaelen closed the door behind her.
He walked back into the room to start clearing his things out, as Kaelen didn’t plan on spending another night in that hotel when he could spend it in a penthouse under his name.
When the news station on the muted TV caught his attention, Kaelen paused to grab the remote and unmute it.
"... The CEO of the Queen’s Casinos has been reportedly found dead in his hotel room, and netizens suspect it was the doing of the ever-increasing assassination activities carried out by underground bounty hunters..."
Ever-increasing assassination activities?
From the looks of it, the local bank manager wasn’t pulling his leg when he said that to him.
Kaelen tilted his head to stare at the housekeeper, whose attention had also been caught by the news broadcast.
"Do you know anything about that?"
The housekeeper was taken aback by Kaelen’s question. "N-No. Why would you even ask me that?" she asked as a sharp glint flashed across her eyes.
"You don’t know anything about bounty hunters?" Kaelen raised a brow.
The housekeeper pressed her lips together. "If that’s what you’re talking about, then who doesn’t know about them?"
"Right? What do you think is their motive for assassinating people, though? Do you think it was because they had some kind of... powerful items on them?" Kaelen asked as he squinted his eyes at the housekeeper in curiosity.
"I-I don’t know. You don’t happen to have any... such thing like that, do you?" she asked as she stared straight into Kaelen’s eyes, when he suddenly snapped his finger at her again, making her flinch and reach into her trolley for the second time.
"You felt it too, didn’t you?" Kaelen asked, feigning surprise.
"Felt what?" the housekeeper asked in a low tone, her hands hidden inside the cover of her trolley.
"It was a strange aura that suddenly swept across my room. What do you think it was?" Kaelen asked and looked thoughtful for a moment, muttering gibberish to himself.
The housekeeper stared at him for a long moment, but before she could react, the news broadcast changed to another topic that piqued their interest.
"... The Emperor has just made a bold statement today, offering a grand prize of one million evolution points to whoever has any information on the mysterious player, Kaelen Cross."
Kaelen’s heart skipped a beat, and his expression changed as he stared at the TV host.
"After it was revealed that it was this mysterious player, Kaelen Cross, who slew the dragon his daughter took credit for, the Emperor has taken it upon himself to personally reward that player as the seventh Dragon Slayer, and the first ever player to not only slay the very first Divine Beast that made its appearance in Evolution Online, but also solo clear a 100-floor Dungeon Tower."
Kaelen’s expression turned uglier with every word that came out of the host’s mouth. It couldn’t be a coincidence that the Emperor was looking for the ’star player,’ knowing fully well that the son of his best friend from ten years ago bore the exact same name, and the Cross surname was rare and almost sacred.
The Emperor wasn’t the man who wielded the sword that killed his father. That was the Governor of Stronghold 3. But Kaelen found it hard to believe the Emperor was unable to find out the killer of his best friend for ten years, and even made the culprit the man in charge of the nine Strongholds’ elite forces.
The same position reserved for his father, and the night before his coronation was the same night Stronghold 2 was razed to the ground.
Kaelen clenched his fist so hard that his nails dug into his palms. His father’s real killer might be strongholds apart, away from his reach, and the prime suspect behind the entire scheme might be even further away, but there was someone connected to the Emperor who was right there in the same stronghold as he was.
Kaelen raised his phone to stare at the new contact in his phone. The same one Cindra had written on his hand during that elevator ride.
He initially didn’t want to have anything to do with her, but a lot of things had changed now. Not only was the Emperor looking for him, but his daughter, Black Rose, was also looking for him and had proven herself to be smart and observant.
The best place to be at the moment wasn’t away from his enemies... but close to them.
He dialed Cindra’s number without hesitation, and the phone rang a few times before the line went through.
"Captain of the White Vanguard Guild. Who am I speaking with?"
Kaelen remained silent for a moment. "This is the guy from the elevator. At the bank."
"Who?" the voice asked in confusion, before exclaiming in surprise. "Oh, hello~ I thought for a second you wouldn’t call." Cindra’s voice immediately changed from professional to flirty.
"Yeah, me too. Is that offer still up?" he asked briefly.
"Of course. I might take a while to get ready, but you can wait for me at the 5-Star Lunar Restaurant. I’ll book a reservation before you get there, and feel free to order anything you want, okay?" Cindra said smoothly.
"Alright. See you there."
"Looking forward to our date," she said and giggled before the line went dead, leaving Kaelen staring at his blank phone screen like he was spooked.
"W-Was that Cindra from the White Vanguard Guild just now?" the housekeeper, whom Kaelen had almost forgotten was in the room, suddenly asked in shock.
He turned to look at her. "Yes, why?"
She exclaimed lightly before laughing awkwardly and bowing respectfully at Kaelen.
"Thank you for your time, sir. I’ll be taking my leave now," she said quickly as a glint of fear flashed across her eyes, and she hurried for the door, when—
"Aren’t you forgetting something?" Kaelen suddenly asked, making the lady freeze mid-step, and a heavy pressure immediately fell over the room.
The housekeeper slowly turned to look at Kaelen with a terrified expression, when she saw Kaelen raising his hands at her.
Not only had she felt the powerful aura earlier coming from that room, but the target had seen the mark of her alliance and still let her in, then went ahead to start interrogating her about bounty hunters.
She initially thought he was just cocky, and was ready to pounce on him when he was distracted, but then she felt the deadly aura of an S+-rank awakener leak from him when the host mentioned the Emperor, and now he was casually calling the daredevil Cindra to book a date.
She had never met anyone more dangerous than this man before, and she couldn’t risk her life for anything he might have in his possession.
She quickly turned around and burst through the door, running down the hallway as fast as her legs could take her while frantically looking behind her.
Kaelen was stunned after witnessing the housekeeper run away.
"What a weird lady..."
He only wanted to remind her she was leaving her trolley behind, when she decided to run away like a little thief.
He clicked his tongue and walked over to the trolley to inspect it, when a magazine on top of the trolley caught his eye, and he picked it up to flip through its pages.
It was about sports cars, and Kaelen was fascinated by all the cool cars, but one especially caught his attention.
He didn’t know much about cars, having lived most of his life in the slums, but what Kaelen knew was that a car producing over 1,600 horsepower and achieving speeds well above 250 mph was an absolute beast.
He immediately knew deep down that he wanted that car.
He quickly called the contact in the magazine, and it didn’t take long before the line connected.
"This is KMT Cars. How may I help you?"
"I’d like to buy a car from you today."
"That’s great news, sir. Which car would you love to make an appointment for?"
"It’s the... uhh," Kaelen stared at the magazine to make out its name.
"Koenigsegg."
