Chapter 49: Another Hidden Boss?! C’mon. Let me game in peace!

A basic fireball was all it took to send the overgrown goblin to oblivion.

[Server Announcement]:

[Kaelen Cross has defeated the Goblin Hidden Boss]

"100,000 merit points?" Kaelen was shocked beyond measure.

He had taken on three missions, hoping to make 20,000 or more merit points in five days, only to end up making 100,000 on day one.

"This is insane."

If earning 20,000 merit points in five days was supposed to be a challenge for a Tier 5, then how the hell was he supposed to explain making 100,000?

That would instantly give him away and make Black Rose suspicious of him, ruining his chances of getting that invitation.

There had to be some other way.

He still had ample time before players began logging back in, as time flowed differently between the two worlds. So he decided to cook up a plan on his way to the next location.

Even after making 100,000 merit points, he couldn’t quit completing the other missions now. He still needed an alibi.

He cut up the goblins for the parts he needed before devouring them and making his way to the village that had reported some crazed farmers.

On arriving at the small border village, it didn’t take long to find the person who had posted the mission after asking around, and they briefed him on the mission before leading him to the farmland, but didn’t go any further out of fear.

Kaelen didn’t need them to. He continued along the way, going over what the NPC had told him.

Apparently, villagers had begun disappearing a while ago, and around the same time, a group of farmers began acting suspiciously, performing occultic activities at midnight, claiming they were summoning the Goddess of Harvest.

This made the villagers suspect the farmers were behind the disappearances, but they were too scared to investigate themselves, so they commissioned the mission for the guild.

Kaelen had to admit once more, this was a part of the game he never knew existed.

For him, it had all been about killing, evolving, and conquering.

He arrived before a small farmhouse and stepped inside, only to find it empty. But the moment he activated his [Sharp Senses], he could pick up several people underground, though he couldn’t find any trapdoor nearby.

He didn’t bother stepping outside to search the farm and simply used a basic fireball to blast through the floor of the house, breaking into an extremely hot cavern that had nothing to do with his fireball. That was when he saw it.

Several robed figures stood around a pit filled with lava, chanting incomprehensible words before Kaelen interrupted.

"Who’s there?"

"We’re so close to completing the ritual. Take care of the intruder immediately!" the man who seemed to be their leader barked out orders.

The cavern was mostly dark, making it hard for them to see Kaelen. But the same couldn’t be said for them, who were standing around the bright flames.

Two of them grabbed their swords and charged toward Kaelen’s direction blindly, while the rest continued their chanting.

But that was easily interrupted when the two men who had left the circle were suddenly flung through the air and dropped into the lake of lava.

"What’s with the long faces? I thought we needed some human sacrifices? There you go," Kaelen said as he revealed himself, still in his human disguise.

He turned to see rows of iron cages where people were trapped inside.

"What have you done?! You have incurred the wrath of the Witch Master upon us all. I curse you!" the leader said, shaking his shaman staff toward Kaelen.

Kaelen braced for impact, but even after waiting for a moment, nothing happened.

"Oh, you meant that metaphorically."

Boom—

The lava pit suddenly surged violently, making the corrupted farmers take a step back in terror.

The leader laughed maniacally. "It’s too late for you to stop me now. I have you to thank for speeding up the summoning process. The sacrifices were indeed well received by the Witch Master. She shall rise and rule the world in her benevolent tyranny, and by her side I shall stand—"

A sharp spike suddenly impaled the cult leader, and many more followed, taking the lives of all those around him and pulling them into the lava pit before they could even react.

At the same time, a system notification rang out across the sky.

[Server Announcement]:

[The Witch Master Hidden Boss has risen]

[Defeat the Hidden Boss and protect the village for additional rewards]

"FINALLY! I HAVE BEEN SET FREE FROM THE INFINITE PRISON THAT OLD MAN HAD SENT ME TO. I SHALL FIND EVERY ONE OF HIS DESCENDANTS, AND I SHALL SHOW NO MERCY—"

"Another Hidden Boss?! C’mon. Let me game in peace." Kaelen wasn’t thrilled at all.

He was just complaining about 100,000 merit points, and the game was trying to force another down his throat.

"Nope. We’re not doing this again," Kaelen said as he took out a new World Authority Fragment from his inventory and raised it toward the Witch Master.

If he could imprison the Hidden Boss instead of killing it, then he should be able to complete the mission without earning any merit points for the Hidden Boss.

The Witch Master smiled mischievously, revealing her neat row of razor-sharp teeth. "No human who came across me has ever lived to tell the tale—except that damn old man. But he’s no more now, and there’s no one to save you from me. There’s no one to save this world from the calamity that has been unleashed—"

"Go to hell."

The World Authority Fragment in his hand exploded into a portal and dragged the Witch Master into its maw like a black hole.

Kaelen was impressed.

He previously had his doubts that the World Authority Fragments would solve his problem, but they did even better than he expected.

Kaelen hadn’t taken more than two steps toward the iron cages when a thought suddenly crossed his mind.

"Wait a minute... I think I forgot to create oxygen in that world."
