Evolution Online: My 10,000× Reward System Multiplies Everything
Chapter 6: Are you saying… Evolution Points are a valid currency in this world?"Guild Leader!" The guard immediately bowed deeply.
’Guild leader?’ Kaelen mused in surprise. Not only did he not know this mysterious woman, but the fact that the city guard was addressing her as Guild Leader could only mean one thing: The entire city belonged to her guild!
’’White Vanguard Guild, was it?’
"You don’t have to trouble yourself with this matter, Guild Leader. I was only trying to discipline this lowly creature for making a mockery of our efforts to protect this city with honour!" the guard cried out melodramatically.
The mysterious woman shifted her hooded gaze to the fat slime who, even without eyes, she could feel was staring her down. But before she could pass judgment, the slime spoke first.
"You must be rich. Can you lend me 5 gold pieces so I can enter the city and sell my loot?" Kaelen asked as he extended a sticky paw toward the Guild Leader.
Black Rose felt her lips twitch upon hearing the slime’s shameless request. She didn’t know how to react, because not only was this the first brazen slime she’d come across, but it was also the first slime she’d ever interacted with.
She touched the pouch at her side, when she remembered she never carried money around with her and deposited it all into the guild’s treasury as soon as she got it. But she could still give him a free pass into the city.
"I don’t have any money. But—" she was saying, when her words got stuck in her throat as the slime ignored her and moved on to her secretary beside her.
"Can you lend me 5 gold pieces?" Kaelen asked with his paws outstretched toward the tall, slender elven lady, who was visibly stunned after the slime ignored Black Rose.
The other subordinates behind them tried their best not to make a sound, as they didn’t take offense but found it incredibly amusing.
This was the first person who had cut Black Rose off and ignored her, both in-game and in real life.
"Sure." The elf shook her hand into her pouch, took out a handful of gold pieces, and dropped them into Kaelen’s paw.
He suddenly grabbed her wrist with a tentacle before she could retrieve her hand, making the squad stand on guard, when they saw Kaelen count out five gold pieces and return the rest to her hand before letting go.
"Thanks. I’ll repay you someday," he said and turned around, handing the five gold pieces to the guard. "Here’s the five gold pieces you requested."
"W-What?" the guard stammered in shock as he looked up to see the death glares of his superiors.
"Have you been charging 5 gold pieces for gate passes?" a beastman who wielded a battle axe asked in an intimidating voice.
"N-No. I was only joking with him. W-We were joking with each other, just like the slime was when he asked if he could pay with Evolution Points or Legendary-tier items," the guard quickly tried to explain. But seeing their ashen expressions, no one was buying his story, especially when he mentioned the last part.
"I swear on my brother’s life. You can ask the slime—" The guard turned toward the slime, but was met with an empty spot where the slime had been standing a moment ago.
"W-Where did he go?"
Kaelen didn’t have time for all that drama and simply tossed the coins to the next guard before heading into the city.
It was buzzing with life as players of different races went about their day; buying, selling, and browsing, while some merely came to crash out at a bar or book a motel.
Kaelen moved around the commercial district for a moment, ignoring the weird gazes of passersby, before he finally entered a shop.
The main reason for choosing this shop specifically was that there were little to no customers despite the quality equipment displayed in the showcase.
Kaelen was familiar with this—a greedy merchant, that is, who sold overpriced products. And as a seller, these were naturally his go-to shops when selling his game loot back at the Stronghold.
"No credit, and certainly no discounts." The merchant’s gruff voice reached his ears at the sound of the doorbell, even before he saw him.
Kaelen didn’t reply and followed the voice to a back desk, where an elderly rat wearing a monocle was sitting and tinkering with an object.
"I’m not here to buy. I’m here to appraise and sell, if we can agree on a price," Kaelen said as he stood before the counter.
"I don’t buy trinkets," the merchant replied almost immediately.
Kaelen didn’t say a word and simply took out a Legendary-tier item from his inventory. It was a skill book.
Howl of Extinction Skill Book (Legendary)
He tossed it onto the table, triggering the merchant, who was about to lift his head and scold him for disturbing his peace. But when his monocle caught the authentic glow of the skill book, he immediately stopped in his tracks.
He didn’t need to touch it to know it was the real deal. He finally looked up, unable to hide the surprise on his face after seeing that, out of all creatures, it was a slime.
He looked back down as he slowly caressed the skill book as though it were his deceased wife.
"Where did you get this from?"
"I robbed a guild. What do you think?" Kaelen replied sarcastically.
"There’s more where that came from," he said as he leaned on the counter to stare at the merchant.
"How much will you give me for it?"
The merchant slowly lifted his head to stare at Kaelen as they entered a deadlock. Before his lips parted, revealing a gold tooth.
"Cash or Evolution Points?" he asked calmly, but he couldn’t hide the excitement in his eyes.
"What?"
"I said, cash or Evolution Points? Which one do yah want?"
Kaelen was taken aback. He wasn’t very knowledgeable about the mechanics of this world and had been operating on the rumours he’d heard about it.
"Are you saying... Evolution Points are a valid currency in this world?"
