Chapter 1006: Appearance

After Michael’s attack, Master Veyl did not dare to delay even slightly. The moment he escaped with the Third Prince, the old man immediately began rushing back toward the empire at full speed. Space distorted continuously around him as he crossed enormous distances without pause.

As a Great Stage being capable of moving through space itself, Master Veyl’s speed was naturally terrifying. However, the empire was simply too far away. Even at his level, crossing such an enormous distance still required time, especially while carrying another person who needed protection from the void’s influence and moving continuously without rest for hours straight.

Fortunately, they were close now. Only several more minutes remained before they reached the imperial capital, which allowed the old man to relax slightly for the first time in hours.

Beside him, the Third Prince looked miserable beyond words. His face remained pale while fear still lingered deeply within his eyes. Ever since escaping from Michael, the prince’s mental state had clearly deteriorated further and further.

Though the Third Prince had faced many assassination attempts in the past, none were like the attack today. For someone so sheltered, it had left a particularly strong impression. Unfortunately, he could not even rest properly given the constant movement Master Veyl maintained throughout their escape.

At some point, the Third Prince finally could not endure anymore.

"Master... please..." His voice sounded hoarse and exhausted. "Can we stop briefly...?"

Master Veyl frowned slightly. Under normal circumstances, stopping now did not seem wise. However, being in a familiar region made the old man somewhat more relaxed. In any case, they were close enough now. Even if the person who had attacked them somehow gave chase, as long as he kept his mind on escaping rather than fighting, things should be manageable.

Thinking this, Master Veyl finally slowed down. "We will rest briefly," he said calmly. "But only for a moment."

Master Veyl descended toward a forest below. The Third Prince nearly collapsed the moment they stopped moving. His breathing was ragged while sweat covered his entire body. For the past several hours, his nerves had been stretched to their limit.

Master Veyl glanced toward him briefly before sitting down cross-legged nearby. "Rest," the old man said calmly. "We will leave shortly."

The Third Prince nodded weakly before sitting heavily against a tree trunk.

For the next thirty minutes, neither of them spoke much. Only the sounds of insects and rustling leaves echoed quietly throughout the forest.

Eventually, after sensing the prince’s condition stabilize somewhat, Master Veyl slowly stood up once more. "We should continue moving."

However, the Third Prince did not move.

Master Veyl frowned slightly. Several seconds passed before the old man spoke again.

"Third Prince?"

The prince still remained seated. Then slowly, he lowered his head while his hands clenched tightly.

"...Why were we running?"

Master Veyl’s brows furrowed instantly.

The Third Prince suddenly looked upward. His exhausted face now carried anger, humiliation, and unwillingness all mixed together.

"You made me look like a coward." His voice gradually rose. "What will my enemies think after this?"

The prince slowly stood up while breathing heavily. "Aren’t you close to the peak of the Great Stage?! Why didn’t you stay and fight him?!"

Master Veyl’s face darkened immediately. However, the Third Prince continued speaking regardless.

"If I return to the capital like this, how will Father look at me?" His breathing became heavier and heavier. "My brothers will use this against me forever."

His voice eventually rose into a near scream. "My reputation in the capital will be ruined!"

At this point, Master Veyl could no longer hide the frustration on his face. The old man stared at the prince silently for several seconds before finally speaking coldly.

"...Do you truly believe reputation matters more than your life?"

Master Veyl wanted to say far more. His expression had already become extremely ugly by now. However, after remembering the identity of the person standing before him, he forcibly suppressed part of his anger. No matter what, this was still an imperial prince.

So in the end, Master Veyl simply inhaled deeply before speaking in a restrained voice. "...We should continue moving."

Unfortunately, the Third Prince immediately shook his head. "No."

This time, the old man’s face genuinely darkened. Master Veyl stared directly at the prince for several long seconds before finally speaking again.

"Your Highness." His voice had already turned considerably colder.

However, the Third Prince still looked unwilling.

Master Veyl finally lost the desire to continue tolerating him. "Though I am powerful, I am not omnipotent," he said coldly. "The fact that the person you offended could nearly injure me from that distance alone already proves he is most likely not someone I can defeat."

The Third Prince’s expression changed slightly.

Master Veyl continued. "Do you think Great Stage cultivators are invincible?" His tone became harsher. "The world is far larger than you imagine."

His frustration finally became fully visible. "That person’s ranged attacks alone are already terrifying enough. If I truly stayed behind to fight him, there is a real possibility both of us would have died there."

The Third Prince clenched his fists tightly. Yet despite hearing all of this, unwillingness still remained within his eyes. According to everything he knew, this Mic fellow was younger than him. How could he possibly be this strong? This old man was simply making excuses. He was the coward here.

Master Veyl noticed it immediately. For a moment, the old man truly wanted to curse outright.

In the end, however, he simply shook his head heavily. Just as he was about to forcefully drag the prince along, his expression changed drastically and he turned to look sharply in a certain direction.

Not far from them, a tall youth sat on a tree branch with eyes that seemed to glow faintly in the evening light. A strangely beautiful owl rested quietly on his shoulder.

Startled by Master Veyl’s sudden tension, the Third Prince turned to look in the same direction. His face changed drastically as well.

When had this figure appeared? He hadn’t even noticed. What alarmed the prince further was that even Master Veyl appeared to have been slow in sensing him.
