Chapter 212: Chapter

Fu Sheng slipped through the dark corridors of the inner estate like a ghost, his hand resting on the heavy, silver-cornered ledger tucked securely inside his tunic. Every muscle in his body was tense. The echo of the scream he had heard earlier still rang in his ears, driving him forward with urgent speed.

As he turned the corner near the quiet, red-decorated bridal quarters, a shadow suddenly darted out from behind a large ornamental vase.

Fu Sheng’s hand instinctively flew to his side, ready to strike, but he stopped himself just in time.

"Fu Sheng!" An Li gasped, her face pale and her eyes wide with frantic urgency. She quickly grabbed his sleeve and pulled him into the deep shadow of a decorative wooden archway.

"An Li," Fu Sheng whispered, his gaze scanning her quickly. "Are you hurt? Where is Wei Meilan?"

"I’m fine, but everything has gone wrong," An Li said, her voice shaking as she tried to keep it down. "Bao Li knows. He knows everything. I was outside the bridal room... I heard him. He knows we are here, and he knew about the plan at the warehouse."

Fu Sheng’s jaw tightened. "I know. I ran into his right-hand man and several guards in the study. It was a trap, but I managed to secure the real ledger." He patted the solid book beneath his tunic. "What about Wei Meilan?"

"It’s awful. Bapo Li... he struck her. He dragged her by her hair. He told her that he sent his brother Bapo Zhao to the warehouse to slaughter Su Long and the villagers. And worse... he is ready to hurt her two children as well."

Fu Sheng’s breath hitched in his chest. A cold, sharp dread pierced through his usual calm. Su Long.

Even with Han Fuji by her side, The heavily armed men under BapoZhao’s command was a death sentence for anyone caught unprepared. The thought of Su Long surrounded, fighting for her life in that dusty clearing, sent a bolt of raw panic through his veins. He wanted to throw caution to the wind and run straight to the warehouse to find her.

"Fu Sheng, what do we do?" An Li asked, her voice trembling. "He threatened Wei Meilan’s children. He said if she doesn’t cooperate, they will be the first to suffer in the labor camps. He locked her in the bridal suite under heavy guard, and he’s planning to force her through the ceremony anyway. He said even if she dies, he will devour every bit of her and her children."

Fu Sheng forced himself to breathe, locking his panic away and letting his focus take over. He had to trust Su Long. She was incredibly clever, and she had a way of turning impossible situations in her favor. Right now, he had to handle the threat directly in front of him.

"We are not leaving Wei Meilan behind," Fu Sheng said, his voice dropping into a low, absolute register. "And we are going to find those kids."

An Li looked at him, surprised. "But the guards—"

"We have the ledger, which means we have the leverage we need to destroy Tiger Alley’s hold on this place," Fu Sheng cut in, his eyes blazing with a quiet, lethal determination. "But we cannot let an innocent woman and her children pay the price for our goal. We are going to break her out. Right now."

He looked back down the corridor, his jaw tight with worry for the woman fighting her own battle at the warehouse.

"We secure Wei Meilan, find her children, and we leave this place together," Fu Sheng declared. "And then, we find Su Long."

An Li stared at Fu Sheng, the terror in her eyes gradually giving way to a spark of desperate hope. She nodded quickly, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "The bridal quarters are at the very end of this hall. There are at least three guards posted directly outside her door, and Bao Li went back to the main banquet hall to greet the late-arriving guests. We have to act before he returns."

"Lead the way," Fu Sheng commanded, his voice barely a whisper. "And stay behind me."

They glided through the shadows of the corridor, silent as falling snow. As they neared the heavy, red-lacquered double doors of the bridal suite, the murmur of the guards’ voices became clear. Three of Bao Li’s elite men stood watch, their hands resting lazily on the hilts of their blades. They were relaxed, confident that no one would dare disrupt the wedding of Tiger Alley’s master.

They never saw Fu Sheng coming.

Using the absolute silence of the carpeted hallway, Fu Sheng closed the distance in a heartbeat. Before the first guard could even turn his head, Fu Sheng’s arm locked around his throat, choking out his warning in a vice grip while simultaneously delivering a brutal sweep to the second guard’s legs.

As the second guard crashed to the floor, the third scrambled to draw his sword. But An Li, moving with sudden courage, hurled a heavy ceramic vase she had snatched from a pedestal. It shattered violently against his face, sending him staggering back into the wall.

Fu Sheng finished the first guard, letting his limp body slide to the floor, and instantly stepped into the space of the third, driving a heavy fist into his solar plexus and knocking him unconscious. The second guard tried to crawl away, but Fu Sheng’s boot met his jaw with a swift, decisive crack.

Within ten seconds, the hallway was silent once more.

Fu Sheng stepped up to the red door and threw his weight against it. The lock shattered, and the door swung open.

Wei Meilan was huddled in the corner of the room, her wedding robes torn, her eyes wild with terror. When she saw Fu Sheng and An Li enter, she shrank back, expecting the worst.

"Wei Meilan, it’s us," An Li rushed forward, dropping to her knees and gently grabbing the weeping woman’s hands. "We are getting you out of here. Right now."

Wei Meilan looked at them, her voice trembling. "My... my children..."

"We know where they are keeping them," Fu Sheng said, his deep voice carrying an absolute authority that instantly calmed her panic. "They are being held in the lower storehouse near the eastern wall. We are going to get them, and then we are leaving this estate."

"But Bapo Li... he said he sent men to kill Su Long..." she sobbed.

"Su Long is stronger than he thinks," Fu Sheng replied, though a tight knot of worry squeezed his chest. "We go. Now."

Meanwhile, on the dusty main road leading toward the roaring sounds of the Bao estate’s banquet, two figures were moving through the dimming evening light.

Su Long walked with a steady, unhurried pace, her silk robes whispering against the dirt. Beside her, Han Fuji walked with his hands tucked casually into his sleeves, a faint, knowing smirk playing on his lips.

Behind them, the warehouse they had left was silent. Bao Zhao’s ambush had not gone the way Tiger Alley had planned. Through a combination of Su Long’s sharp wits and Han Fuji’s seemingly endless, mysterious resources, the trap had been thoroughly dismantled. Bapo Zhao was currently tied to a support beam in his own warehouse, and his men had been scattered or subdued.

"You seem remarkably relaxed for someone walking straight into a lion’s den," Su Long remarked quietly, her eyes scanning the outer walls of the estate looming in the distance.

Han Fuji chuckled softly, his eyes reflecting the distant glow of the banquet’s lanterns. "A lion is only dangerous when it thinks it’s the hunter. Once it realizes it’s the one surrounded, it behaves much like a cornered cat."

Su Long glanced at him, Fu Fong’s warnings briefly flashing through her mind. She knew Han Fuji was hiding a massive amount of influence. He had people in this lawless land who feared and obeyed him, but right now, his goals aligned with hers.

"Bapo Li thinks his brother has already slaughtered us," Su Long said, a cold smile touching her lips. "I can’t wait to see the look on his face when we walk through those front gates as his honored guests."

"Oh, it will be a sight to behold, Su Long," Han Fuji agreed, his voice dripping with dark amusement as they approached the outer gates of the estate. "Let us go offer our congratulations."

...

"I can walk," Wei Meilan whispered, her voice shaking but filled with a sudden, desperate strength. She stood up, leaning briefly against An Li before steadying herself. "Just... please, my children. We have to find them."

"We will," An Li promised, holding her arm to guide her out of the room. "We’re going to get them and get out of here. Meilan, just stay close to us."

They moved quickly, leaving the unconscious guards slumped against the red-carpeted walls of the bridal wing. Fu Sheng led the way, his eyes scanning every shadow, while Han Fuji kept pace, his relaxed posture contrasting sharply with the tension in the air.

"The lower storehouse near the eastern wall is where they keep the goods before transport," Han Fuji murmured, as if they were taking a casual stroll through a garden. "And also where they lock up those they wish to keep quiet. It’s heavily guarded on a normal night, but with the banquet in full swing, most of the men are distracted by the wine."

"Then we make it quick," Fu Sheng said.

They slipped through a side exit of the residential quarters, stepping into the cool night air. The distant, boisterous sounds of the banquet—laughter, clinking cups, and loud music echoed from the main courtyard, providing the perfect cover for their movements.

Following Han Fuji’s lead, they navigated the dark, winding paths behind the estate’s kitchens and quarters. Finally, a low, stone building with a heavy iron-reinforced door came into view. Two guards stood outside, holding torches, their shadows stretching long across the dirt.

"Wait here," Fu Sheng whispered to An Li and Meilan.

Before the guards could even register the shifting shadows, Fu Sheng and Han Fuji moved in tandem. Fu Sheng caught the first guard with a swift, silent chokehold, dragging him into the dark brush, while Han Fuji stepped up to the second, calmly catching the man’s wrist as he reached for his blade and driving a precise strike to his throat.

Both guards were silenced without a single alarm being raised.

Fu Sheng searched the unconscious guard’s belt and retrieved a heavy iron key ring. He stepped up to the massive wooden door, slotted the key into the lock, and turned it with a heavy, satisfying clack.

The door swung open, revealing a dark, musty interior filled with crates and sacks.

"Mother?!" a small, trembling voice cried out from the depths of the room.

Meilan let out a choked sob and ran past Fu Sheng, rushing into the darkness. "A-Bao! A-Ling!"

Two small figures huddled behind a stack of crates scrambled forward, throwing themselves into her arms. Meilan held them tightly, weeping silently as she kissed their faces, murmuring prayers of gratitude.

An Li stood by the door, her eyes shining with relief as she watched them. "We got them, Fu Sheng. They’re safe."

"Not yet," Fu Sheng said, his eyes turning back toward the main courtyard where the light of the banquet burned brightest. "We need to get them over the eastern wall first. Then, we find Su Long."
