Chapter 213: Chapter

The heavy iron door of the storage room opened with a long creak. Outside, the late afternoon sun was starting to set, casting orange light and long shadows across the yard. In the distance, the sounds of the banquet had already begun people laughing, drinking wine, and playing music.

Inside the dim room, Wei Meilan knelt on the dirt floor, holding her two children, A-Bao and A-Ling, as tight as she could.

"We don’t have much time," Fu Sheng said quietly, his voice firm. "An Li, help her up. We need to escape through the eastern wall."

Before An Li could grab the children’s hands, the heavy sound of marching boots echoed down the stone alley outside. Armed guards were heading straight toward them.

"They aren’t in the north hallway!" a angry voice shouted from outside. "Check the storage rooms! Master Bao said no one leaves alive!"

An Li gasped, stepping in front of Wei Meilan and the kids. Fu Sheng moved fast, standing right in front of them as six armed Tiger Alley guards turned the corner with their swords drawn.

"Look what we have here," the lead guard sneered. "The runaway bride and her friends."

Fu Sheng reached into his robe, pulled out the heavy book, the real ledger filled with proof of Tiger Alley’s crimes and shoved it into An Li’s hands.

An Li looked at the book, her heart beating fast. "Fu Sheng... what are you doing?"

"Take Wei Meilan and the kids," Fu Sheng ordered. "There is a gap in the wooden fence near the old well on the east side. Get them out before it gets completely dark."

"No! I’m not leaving you behind!" An Li cried out. "We were supposed to leave together!"

"If we all run now, none of us will make it," Fu Sheng said without turning around. He kept his eyes locked on the guards. "Take this ledger and find Su Long."

He grabbed An Li’s shoulder, holding her tight so she would listen.

"You have to stop Su Long from coming back in here to save me. *No matter what.* The plan hasn’t changed. This book must be given to the military general when he arrives. If Su Long comes back here for me, we lose everything, and Bao Li wins. Do you understand?"

An Li swallowed her tears and nodded, hugging the heavy book tight against her chest. "...I understand."

"Now run!" Fu Sheng yelled.

He pulled out a heavy sword and charged forward, blocking the narrow doorway with his own body.

The first guard swung his blade, but Fu Sheng blocked it easily. Before the man could react, Fu Sheng slammed the heavy handle of his sword into the guard’s jaw, knocking him out instantly.

"Kill him!" the other guards screamed, rushing forward together.

Because the alleyway was so narrow, only two guards could attack him at once. Fu Sheng stood his ground like a stone wall, swinging his heavy blade, kicking guards back, and stopping them from getting past him.

Behind him, An Li grabbed Wei Meilan’s arm. "Meilan, take the kids! Follow me!"

Wei Meilan didn’t hesitate. She picked up A-Ling, grabbed A-Bao’s hand, and ran toward the eastern wall with An Li right beside them.

Fu Sheng heard their footsteps fade away into the quiet alley.

He swung his sword in a wide arc, forcing the remaining guards to jump back in fear. He was completely alone, heavily outnumbered inside Tiger Alley’s stronghold, and the sun was almost completely gone.

Yet, Fu Sheng stood calm and strong in the dark alley, holding off the guards with his blade.

The ledger was safe. Wei Meilan and her children were escaping.

Now, all he had to do was buy enough time for Su Long to finish the job.

Su Long and Han Fuji, accompanied by a small squad of armed men, pushed through the outer iron gates of the Bao estate. They reached the edge of the inner courtyard just as the sky turned a deep, bruised violet.

Suddenly, figures emerged frantically from the shadow of the eastern passage, An Li, Wei Meilan, and the two young children, breathless and terrified.

The moment their eyes met, relief and terror washed over the courtyard.

"Su Long!" An Li cried out, running straight to her.

Su Long quickly caught An Li by the shoulders, her eyes scanning the small group. "An Li! Meilan! You made it out.. where is Fu Sheng?"

She turned immediately to charge toward the inner corridors to find him, but An Li caught her sleeve, pulling her back with all her strength.

"No! Su Long, wait!" An Li gasped, thrusting the heavy, silver-cornered ledger directly into Su Long’s hands. "You can’t go in there! Fu Sheng stays behind to hold off Bao Li’s men so we could escape with the children."

Su Long stared down at the book in her hands, her knuckles turning white. Raw panic surged in her chest. "He’s in there alone? I’m going back for him—"

"No! You can’t!" An Li shouted, tears spilling over her cheeks. "Fu Sheng made me promise! He said you must not go back inside at all costs. He said... if you go back for him, we lose everything and Bao Li wins. The military general is arriving near the northern gates right now. We have to give him this ledger before he leaves!"

Su Long froze, her breath hitching as her mind fought between her instinct to save Fu Sheng and the cold weight of the mission they had bled for.

Before she could speak, Han Fuji stepped smoothly between them. His usual easygoing smirk was gone, replaced by a firm, serious expression.

"Go to the general, Su Long," Han Fuji said quietly. He signaled to the armed men behind him. "I’ll take these men and go back inside for Fu Sheng."

Su Long looked at him, her eyes sharp with lingering distrust.

Seeing her hesitation, Han Fuji took a step forward and gently took both of her hands in his. His grip was surprisingly warm and steady.

"Fu Sheng will be fine," Han Fuji reassured her, looking straight into her eyes. "I give you my word. I will bring him out alive.. I can swear it to you."

He paused, letting out a soft, dry laugh as he looked at her guarded face. "I know you are suspicious of me, Su Long. And as I said before, I have my reasons for everything I’ve done. But after today... after this is all over, I will tell you everything I have been hiding."

Su Long looked down at his hands holding hers, then met his gaze with an icy, calm clarity.

"We aren’t the ones who need to know," Su Long said flatly, pulling her hands back from his grip. "Bai Ming does. As she is your wife."

Han Fuji flinched slightly, a flicker of genuine surprise passing through his eyes before he slowly nodded.

"Fair enough," Han Fuji murmured softly. He turned toward the dark, echoing corridor where the clashing of steel could still be faintly heard. "Get the ledger to the general. Leave Fu Sheng to me."
