Chapter 214: Chapter

Heavy boots crunched against the stone, and the sharp ring of metal filled the narrow alley behind the storage rooms.

Fu Sheng stood like a wall, refusing to move. His boots were planted firmly on the dusty ground, his clothes ripped and covered in sweat. Two guards lay knocked out at his feet, but three more rushed in to take their place, their faces wild with rage. Every time they tried to attack, Fu Sheng’s heavy sword hit theirs with terrifying force, pushing them back into the dark hallway.

His muscles ached, and his breathing was heavy. Still, he kept his eyes locked on the corner of the path. Every second he stood here gave An Li, Wei Meilan, and the kids more time to escape.

"Kill him! Why can’t you hit him?!" a guard roared, lunging forward with his sword aimed straight at Fu Sheng’s chest.

Fu Sheng stepped aside just in time, grabbing the man’s wrist and slamming his elbow into the guard’s collarbone. The man collapsed, but another guard saw an opening and slashed his sword toward Fu Sheng’s shoulder.

Clang!

A flash of silver steel cut through the dark, blocking the blade so hard that the guard’s weapon flew out of his hands and hit the stone wall.

Before the guard could react, a hand grabbed his throat and slammed him backward onto the ground.

Fu Sheng wiped the sweat from his eyes and looked up, surprised to see Han Fuji standing beside him. Han Fuji’s sleeves were rolled up, and he looked completely calm despite the fight. Behind him stood six well-trained men dressed in plain dark clothes.

"Looks like you could use a hand, Fu Sheng," Han Fuji said with a light smile, as if they were just chatting in a tea shop.

Fu Sheng stared at him in shock, his chest heaving. "Han Fuji? What are you doing here? I told them—"

"Su Long and An Li are safe," Han Fuji cut in smoothly, stepping forward to block another guard’s attack. "And I promised Su Long I would bring you back alive. I don’t break my promises to family."

With a quick twist of his wrist, Han Fuji knocked the attacker’s weapon away and hit him squarely in the neck, knocking him out cold. Behind them, his men moved quickly and quietly, taking down the rest of the Tiger Alley guards in seconds.

Fu Sheng lowered his sword, looking at Han Fuji with quiet thanks and deep suspicion. He had seen many fighters, but the way Han Fuji moved—fast, effortless, and lethal, proved he was no ordinary man.

"You didn’t come alone," Fu Sheng noted, looking at the plain-clothed men securing the path.

"The rest of the men came along," Han Fuji replied vaguely, wiping dirt from his sleeve. He turned to Fu Sheng with a genuine smile. "Let’s go. Once the main banquet hall realizes what happened, Bao Li’s men will swarm this place. We need to leave before we get trapped."

Fu Sheng gave a heavy nod and put his sword away. "Let’s move."

Outside the estate, carriage wheels kicked up dust as the vehicle hurried through the quiet streets toward the Fu family’s house.

Inside the carriage, Wei Meilan held her two children tightly against her chest. A-Bao and A-Ling had finally stopped crying and were now fast asleep in her arms, exhausted from the fear.

Sitting across from them, Su Long kept one hand over the heavy book tucked inside her robes. Beside her, An Li fidgeted nervously, holding onto her dress.

"We’re almost at the Fu house," An Li whispered softly.

Wei Meilan looked up, worry in her tired eyes. "These are Fu Sheng’s parents... People who were supposed to be my in-laws if I hadn’t left Fu Sheng years ago. I don’t think they would accept me at this point."

Su Long glanced at An Li, then turned to Wei Meilan with a steady, reassuring look. "You don’t need to worry about the past right now. They know who the real enemy is, and they will not turn you away. You and your children are safe with them."

A few minutes later, the carriage stopped right in front of the Fu mansion.

Su Long and An Li helped Wei Meilan and her children out of the carriage. Hearing a knock on the gate, Fu Lie walked out carrying a small oil lamp. Because she had been very young when Wei Meilan was with Fu Sheng, she did not recognize her at all.

Fu Li looked at the unfamiliar woman and turned back toward the house, calling out, "Mother!"

Madam Fu walked out onto the porch right behind her. The moment her eyes fell on Wei Meilan standing under the lamplight with her children, Madam Fu stopped in her tracks. She recognized her instantly.

Wei Meilan stayed quiet for a moment, her head bowed in quiet respect. She greeted her gently and said, "Fu Sheng and Su Long brought me here."

Madam Fu looked at her, then down at the two small children. She gave a simple, understanding nod.

"Come in," Madam Fu said softly. "You and your children come inside."

Su Long watched quietly, feeling a wave of relief as Wei Meilan was guided through the doors. She turned to An Li and gave her a firm nod. "They are safe. We need to go."

An Li nodded back, her eyes full of determination. "Let’s go find the general."

Leaving the house behind, Su Long and An Li moved quickly through the dark streets toward the northern gate.

The military general sent by the court to inspect the Barren Lands had set up camp just outside the northern border. Meeting him was their only chance to legally destroy Tiger Alley. Without his official authority, fighting Bao Li would just be seen as a gang war instead of real justice.

As they got closer to the border, they saw armored soldiers patrolling the area under the light of burning torches. Banners flapped softly in the night breeze.

Two guards stepped forward, crossing their spears to block the path.

"Halt!" one guard shouted sternly. "No civilians allowed in the military camp! State your business!"

Su Long stepped forward into the torchlight, completely calm. She reached into her robes, pulled out the heavy book with silver corners, and held it up so the guards could clearly see the official seals stamped on the cover.

"We are here to see General Lin," Su Long declared firmly. "We have the original records of Tiger Alley’s illegal weapons, bribes, and crimes."

The guards looked at each other, surprised.

"We need to see him right now," An Li added, stepping up next to Su Long. "Before Bao Li realizes his secrets are gone."

The lead guard stared at the heavy book in Su Long’s hands and realized how important it was. He lowered his spear and gave a firm nod.

"Wait here," the guard said. "I will tell the General right away."
