Chapter 218: Chapter
Su Long and Fu Sheng walked back up the porch steps and into the warm main house. The scent of roasted barley tea and fresh rice broth filled the wooden hallway, replacing the cold air from outside.
Further down the hall, Fu Li and Fu Fei were just stepping out of a guest bedroom, quietly pulling the wooden door partially shut. Fu Li held a bundle of extra cotton quilts, while Fu Die carried an empty tray of small wooden bowls.
"They’re inside," Fu Li whispered, smiling softly as Su Long and Fu Sheng approached. "We set up the big bed for them with our warmest blankets."
"The little ones ate two whole bowls of broth before their eyes started closing," Fu Fei added with a light chuckle. "They’re fast asleep now."
"Thank you, both of you," Fu Sheng said quietly, giving his younger sisters a gentle nod before pushing the bedroom door open a crack.
Inside, a small oil lamp burned softly on a side table, casting a gentle, golden glow across the room. On the large bed, little A-Bao and A-Ling were tucked under heavy, clean quilts, breathing slowly in a deep, peaceful sleep.
Wei Meilan sat on the edge of the mattress, gently smoothing A-Ling’s hair. Her eyes were still red from crying earlier, but the pale, terrified look on her face had finally been replaced by quiet relief.
Hearing the door creak, Wei Meilan turned around. When she saw Fu Sheng and Su Long enter, she immediately stood up and bowed deeply to them both.
"Fu Sheng... Su Long," Wei Meilan said softly, her voice trembling slightly with gratitude. "I don’t even know how to begin to thank you. You saved my children. You saved my life."
Fu Sheng stepped forward, his tall frame cutting a calm, steady figure in the dimly lit room. He looked at the two sleeping children, then turned to Wei Meilan, his expression soft and serious.
"You don’t need to thank me, Wei Meilan," Fu Sheng said gently, his voice low so as not to wake the kids. "I should be thanking you. You risked everything to betray Bao Li. If you hadn’t hidden that key and stayed strong when his guards questioned you, none of us would have made it out of Tiger Alley tonight."
Wei Meilan looked up, tears brimming in her eyes once more, but this time a small, genuine smile touched her lips. "I only did what any mother would do to protect her children. But without you and Su Long, we never would have escaped that place alive."
Su Long walked over, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on Wei Meilan’s shoulder. "Bao Li and his men have been captured by the imperial army. It’s completely over now. You and your children are safe here, and no one will ever harm you again."
Wei Meilan wiped a tear from her cheek and nodded, looking over at her sleeping children with a heart full of peace for the first time in years. "Thank you... thank you so much."
Su Long looked down at the two sleeping children, then turned her eyes back to Wei Meilan. Her tone was gentle, but her question carried immense weight in the quiet room.
"Meilan... do you want to see Fu Jin and Fu Jun?" Su Long asked softly. "After all, you are their real biological mother."
The moment the words left Su Long’s lips, Wei Meilan froze. The small smile on her face faded into a look of sudden, intense hesitation. Her hands clutched tightly at the fabric of her skirt as a rush of complicated emotions guilt, longings of a mother, and the lingering shame of the past flooded her chest.
She bit her lip, her heart pounding as she slowly turned her gaze toward Fu Sheng.
Fu Sheng stood by the wooden table, his face calm and unreadable under the dim lamplight. Seeing her turn to him with such deep hesitation, his eyes softened completely. He didn’t look at her with resentment or anger for the years that had passed.
Instead, Fu Sheng gave her a firm, reassuring nod.
"They deserve to know their mother, Meilan," Fu Sheng said quietly, his voice deep and comforting in the stillness of the room. "And you deserve to see them."
A heavy tear slipped down Wei Meilan’s cheek, but this time, it was met with a breath of profound relief. She looked from Fu Sheng to Su Long, nodding her head slowly.
"I... I would like that very much," Wei Meilan whispered, her voice choked with emotion.
Su Long smiled warmly, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "Rest tonight with A-Bao and A-Ling. Tomorrow morning, when the sun comes up, we will bring them to you."
As soon as Su Long and Fu Sheng stepped out of the guest room into the hallway, they found Madam Fu waiting for them in the dim light of the corridor.
Her arms were crossed tightly, her posture stiff as iron, and her face held a storm of emotions. She did not look happy. The moment her eyes fell on the two of them, the quiet fury she had been suppressing exploded into a harsh whisper.
"Are you two out of your minds?" Madam Fu snapped, her voice trembling with anger. "You risk your lives fighting gangs and invading Tiger Alley without a single thought for us! You didn’t even prepare your father and me mentally for any of this! And then... you bring her here?"
She gestured sharply toward the guest room door, her eyes burning with deep resentment.
"Do you really think I ever wanted to see her again? That girl abandoned her family, left Fu Sheng, and abandoned her own children! And yet you brought her right through our front door!"
Fu Sheng stepped forward, reaching out a hand to gently clasp his mother’s shoulder. "Mother, please, calm down—"
"Don’t tell me to calm down!" Madam Fu cut him off, slapping his hand away.
She stood tall, glaring at her son and Su Long, her chest heaving as she pointed a finger toward the main living hall.
"You listen to me right now, Fu Sheng, and you answer my questions," she demanded, her voice cutting through the silent house like a knife. "Why on earth are you doing this to Fu Teng? Why are you keeping Fu Teng trapped in this house? What are you hiding from us?!"
Fu Sheng exchanged a quick, heavy look with Su Long. In all his years, he had never seen his mother this angry, her protective instincts for her children pushed past the absolute limit.
He had to tell her the truth, that one of her sons was into men.
