Chapter 219: Chapter

Fu Sheng stood quiet under the flickering hallway light.

His mother was still furious. The longer he waited to answer, the more she believed he was hiding a terrible secret from her.

Su Long stood silently beside him, watching the heavy tension rise between them.

Madam Fu took a step closer, her voice shaking with anger. "Well? You keep telling me to lock Fu Teng inside. You tell everyone not to let him leave, but you won’t tell me why. And now you come home in the middle of the night after fighting gangs, bringing back a woman who ran away from this family years ago!"

Her eyes filled with tears. "What is going on with my children?"

Fu Sheng looked down, taking a heavy breath. "Mother..."

"No!" She shook her head fiercely. "Don’t call me that and then give me another excuse! I am his mother. If something is wrong with Fu Teng, I have a right to know."

Fu Sheng squeezed his hands into tight fists. He knew this moment would come, but he hadn’t wanted it to happen tonight—not after everything they had just gone through, and not when everyone was so tired.

But he couldn’t avoid it anymore.

Su Long gently took his hand, giving him a warm, steady squeeze. Fu Sheng looked down at her. She gave him a small, reassuring nod. Tell her.

Fu Sheng took a deep breath. "Mother, you’re right."

Madam Fu froze, her anger turning into fear.

"We have been hiding something from you," Fu Sheng said softly.

She looked at him nervously. "What is it? Is he sick?"

"No."

"Did he get into trouble with the guards?"

"No."

"Then what is it, Fu Sheng?"

Fu Sheng waited a moment. The truth was hard to say out loud. Finally, he looked straight into her eyes.

"Fu Teng doesn’t feel the way other men do."

Madam Fu stared at him. "What do you mean?"

Fu Sheng swallowed hard. "He isn’t attracted to women."

The hallway went completely quiet. Madam Fu stood frozen, looking at her oldest son as if she couldn’t understand his words.

Her brows pulled together. "I don’t understand."

Fu Sheng spoke gently. "He has never wanted to marry a woman, Mother. Any woman."

Madam Fu didn’t move.

Su Long watched her closely. She expected her to be shocked or confused, but the complete silence felt much worse.

Madam Fu slowly lowered her arms. "Not attracted to women?"

Fu Sheng nodded. "Yes."

Her eyes widened in total confusion. "You mean... he doesn’t want a wife at all?"

Fu Sheng looked at her calmly. "He doesn’t."

Madam Fu stepped back until her shoulders bumped into the wooden wall. She looked as if she couldn’t catch her breath.

"No," she whispered, shaking her head.

Fu Sheng stayed still.

"No!" she said louder, her voice trembling. "You must be wrong!"

"I’m not."

"Fu Teng would never—"

"He would, Mother," Fu Sheng said quietly. "We didn’t just figure this out today."

She looked up. "How long have you known?"

"A while now."

Madam Fu covered her mouth with a shaking hand. She thought back to everything in the past how Fu Teng always refused marriage matches, how he avoided young women, and how uncomfortable he got whenever the family talked about him settling down.

She had always thought he was just being stubborn or picky. She never imagined he simply had no desire for women at all.

"What about Zhao Yue?" Madam Fu asked, her voice cracking with worry. "He is engaged to her! That young girl is so fond of him, and our families already agreed on the marriage!"

Fu Sheng shook his head with deep regret. "That is why Fu Teng cannot marry her, Mother. It wouldn’t be fair to Zhao Yue. He can’t give her the love she deserves, and marrying her would only make her miserable."

Beside him, Su Long kept her face calm and quiet. She didn’t say anything out loud, but in her mind, a suspicion was forming. Thinking about Fu Teng’s secretive behavior and the strange way their allies acted tonight, she had a strong guess about who Fu Teng might actually care about. But knowing how tense the mood was, Su Long kept her thoughts to herself.

Madam Fu turned away, her breathing fast and heavy. "I just wanted him to marry... I wanted him to have a family..."

"He can still have a good life, Mother," Su Long said gently, stepping closer. "It just might look different from what you expected."

Madam Fu looked at her with tears running down her face. "You don’t understand. I am his mother! I raised him. I watched him grow!" She pressed a hand to her chest. "I only wanted him to be happy!"

Fu Sheng felt terrible for her. "I know."

"Then why didn’t he tell me?" she cried softly. "Why keep it a secret?"

Fu Sheng didn’t answer right away, because the truth was obvious.

Fu Teng was scared—scared of hurting her, scared of being rejected, and scared that his own family would look at him with disappointment.

Su Long spoke up softly. "Maybe... he was afraid you wouldn’t accept him."

Madam Fu closed her eyes. The words hurt because she knew they were true. She remembered how often she nagged him about getting married and how she always compared him to Fu Sheng. She had never stopped to ask why he looked so pained during those talks. She had just thought he was being difficult.

She wiped her face with her sleeve and let out a painful breath. "So all this time... he was afraid of me?"

Fu Sheng shook his head quickly. "No, Mother. He was afraid of disappointing you." He stepped closer to her. "Fu Teng loves you. He loves this family. He just didn’t know how to tell you something so hard."

Madam Fu looked down at the floor, her hands trembling. She stayed quiet for a long time.

Finally, she whispered, "Does he know you told me?"

Fu Sheng paused. "No."

Madam Fu looked toward Fu Teng’s bedroom down the hall. Her face was full of sadness and guilt.

"Don’t tell him."

Fu Sheng frowned slightly. "Mother—"

"I said don’t," she insisted softly. "I need time to process this."

Su Long watched her carefully, seeing how hurt and tired she looked.

Madam Fu looked back at them with red eyes. "Don’t misunderstand me. I don’t hate him. I could never hate my own son." She wiped another tear. "I just... don’t know how to handle this right now."

Fu Sheng’s eyes softened. "You don’t have to figure it out tonight."

Madam Fu nodded tiredly. She looked toward the guest room where Wei Meilan and her kids were resting.

"Too much has happened tonight," she said quietly. "We’ll talk again tomorrow."

Fu Sheng nodded. "Alright."

She turned to walk away, but stopped after a few steps. Without turning around, she asked softly, "Fu Sheng?"

"Yes, Mother?"

"Is he... is he miserable?" Her voice was small and shaky. "Hiding this inside all the time... is he in pain?"

Fu Sheng looked at Su Long, then answered truthfully.

"He has been carrying a very heavy burden, Mother. But now that it’s out in the open, maybe he won’t have to carry it alone anymore."

Madam Fu stood still for a moment, her shoulders shaking under her shawl.

"That’s enough for tonight," she whispered.

She walked away slowly, her footsteps fading down the hallway until Fu Sheng and Su Long were left alone.

Su Long let out a long breath. "That went better than I thought it would."

Fu Sheng gave her a tired look. "You think that went well?"

Su Long smiled gently. "She didn’t throw anything at you, and she asked if he was hurting. That’s a good start, Fu Sheng."
