Chapter 220: Chapter
Su Long looked at Fu Sheng, seeing the deep exhaustion etched into his face after the brutal fight at Tiger Alley and the heavy conversation with his mother.
"Go to him, Fu Sheng," Su Long said softly, her voice filled with gentle warmth. "Fu Teng has been waiting in his room all night. He needs to know you’re back safe, and he needs his older brother right now."
Fu Sheng looked at her, the tension in his shoulders finally beginning to melt away. He gave a quiet, tired nod.
Su Long stepped closer, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. She offered him a small, tender smile, her eyes soft in the dim light of the hallway. "I’ll go check on Wei Milan and make sure the rest of the house is settled. Don’t worry about anything else tonight."
Before Fu Sheng could speak, Su Long leaned in close, pressing a soft kiss against his cheek.
Fu Sheng stood frozen for a beat, his heart warming as her gentle touch washed away the last lingering stress of the night. Su Long pulled back, giving his hand one last reassuring squeeze, before turning around and slipping quietly down the dark corridor toward the front quarters.
Fu Sheng touched his cheek where her lips had rested, a faint, genuine smile gracing his face. Taking a deep breath, he turned on his heel and walked toward Fu Teng’s room at the far end of the hall.
Su Long turned and walked toward Wei Meilan’s room, intending to check on her one last time before resting. But when she pushed the door open slightly, the bed was empty.
Turning down the quiet corridor, Su Long headed toward the twins’ room. Fu Jin and Fu Jun were likely fast asleep by now.
She stepped through the doorway and paused. Wei Meilan was sitting on the edge of the boys’ bed, her face pale and swollen from crying. In the dim lamplight, she looked fragile, her hands lightly resting on the blanket near her sons’ sleeping forms.
Su Long hesitated at the door, unsure if she should turn around and leave her alone with her thoughts. But just as Su Long took a half-step back, Wei Meilan called out softly.
"Su Long..."
Wei Meilan stood up slowly and walked over to her. Before Su Long could say a word, Wei Meilan reached out and wrapped her arms around her in a tight, sudden hug.
"Thank you so much for everything you have done," Wei Meilan whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "No woman would be willing to open her home to her husband’s ex. But you are different. Thank you for taking care of my boys... and for taking care of Fu Sheng."
Wei Meilan pulled back, offering a small, tearful smile.
Su Long let out a quiet sigh, her gaze calm and unbothered. "They are my children, even if not biologically, and Fu Sheng is my husband. I am his one and only wife. If I don’t love them, who will? I don’t hate you, Wei Meilan. Whatever past you had with Fu Sheng and this family belongs in the past, and it was certainly none of my concern back then."
Su Long looked at her steadily, her voice gentle but firm. "Bringing you into this home tonight was an act of kindness. Please don’t mistake it for anything else. You can speak with the boys tomorrow morning before you leave."
Wei Meilan froze, the small smile vanishing from her lips as the words "before you leave" hung heavily in the air.
"Leave?" Wei Meilan whispered, her eyes widening as fresh tears pooled in her lashes. She looked back toward Fu Jin and Fu Jun sleeping peacefully on the bed, her voice trembling. "Su Long... I thought... I thought now that Tiger Alley is gone, I could stay. I thought I could finally be a mother to them again."
Su Long stood her ground, her posture relaxed yet completely unyielding. Her tone remained soft, grounded, and free of any malice, but her boundary was crystal clear.
"You gave up the right to raise them the day you walked away, Wei Meilan," Su Long said calmly, her eyes fixed on the former matriarch of the boys. "Fu Jin and Fu Jun know me as their mother. They have stability, safety, and a home built on loyalty. Bringing you back into their daily lives as a permanent fixture would only bring confusion and open old wounds for everyone in this family."
Wei Meilan took a shaky step back, wringing her hands together. "I didn’t want to leave them back then! I was terrified, It was my parents and—"
"I know you suffered, and I do not downplay your pain," Su Long interrupted gently. "That is why Fu Sheng saved you tonight. That is why we gave your children shelter, food, and protection. We did not leave you to die in Tiger Alley. But kindness is not an invitation to undo the present."
Su Long stepped closer, her clear, dark eyes searching Wei Meilan’s pale face.
"Fu Sheng’s heart belongs to me," Su Long stated with simple, undeniable authority. "This household is under my care. You are welcome to see Fu Jin and Fu Jun tomorrow morning, to hold them, and to say what you need to say so your heart can heal. But when the sun rises and the imperial guards secure the roads, you and your little ones will move on to a safe place away from this family."
Wei Meilan pressed a hand to her mouth, a quiet sob escaping her throat. She looked at Su Long,at the calm, unshakable woman who had replaced her, who protected her children without hesitation, and who held Fu Sheng’s absolute devotion. There was no cruelty in Su Long’s eyes, only the protective grace of a woman who knew exactly who she was and where she stood.
Slowly, Wei Meilan lowered her head, wiping her cheeks with her sleeve.
"I understand," Wei Meilan choked out softly, her shoulders dropping in complete surrender. "I won’t... I won’t cause any trouble for you or Fu Sheng. Thank you for letting me see them one last time."
Su Long offered a gentle nod. "Get some rest, Wei Meilan. Tomorrow will be a long day for all of us."
