Axel reached into the barrel, pulled out an arrow, and set it against the string. Dragging the bowstring back with steady, iron tension, he aimed the arrow high into the overcast sky.
As the string hit its absolute limit, the pale white stripes running across his grey skin began to pulse violently, glowing in harmony with the Symbol of (Desperatio) etched into his chest.
Tendrils of dark flames flared up from his fingers, wrapping around the arrow shaft until it resembled a lance of black fire.
SHING!
He released the string. The arrow tore upward into the air with a piercing screech that rattled the atmosphere.
Without pausing for a fraction of a second, Axel reached back, grabbed another arrow, pulled, and fired. His movements turned into a blur of fluid precision, drawing and releasing in rapid succession.
He was recreating the exact arching volley technique he had seen Lucien use during their battle against the High-Lich. Back then, he had watched the Golden Prince rain down terrifying aerial bombardments, studying the precise arc, mana distribution, and split-timing mechanics using his energy vision and Runic Eyes. Now, he executed it effortlessly.
The black-flamed arrows sped high into the upper clouds before reaching their apex and curving downward. Mid-fall, the unstable demonic mana infused within the shafts reached critical mass.
BOOM!
BOOMM!!!
BOOMMMM!!!
The arrows detonated in mid-air, splitting into thousands of razor-sharp, flaming splinters that rained down over the invisible host like a storm of dark meteors.
Down on the ground, the forty 4th phase entities reacted instantly. Barrier techniques, elemental shields, and compressed psychic fields expanded across the ranks as the dead warriors executed their defensive arts to shield the 3rd phase entities behind them. Explosions rippled across the field, dark fire chewing through psychic barriers and scorching the ground.
Meanwhile, the 5th phase entity at the front didn’t even raise a weapon. It moved forward with calm precision, like a massive flagship sailing through a gale. Stray splinters of despair flame sped toward it, only to bend away inches from its skin, deflected by an invisible distortion in space.
Axel’s eyes narrowed. That 5th phase entity wasn’t just a physical construct... it was attuned to the domain itself, wielding a portion of the Duke’s spatial manipulation.
He also noticed another troubling detail. The forty 4th phase entities had blocked his splinter rain with far too much ease.
The psychic energy composing their bodies seemed roughly ten times more resistant to his Despair flames than any normal mana shield would be. Within this territory, their construct bodies were heavily reinforced.
Knowing that long-range suppression wouldn’t cut it, Axel abandoned the bow.
He kicked off the ground with explosive power.
The earth beneath his boots shattered into dust as the sheer kinetic force propelled him upward, clearing two hundred meters in less than a second. With a single violent flap of his demonic wings, he bypassed the frontline of 3rd and 4th phase entities, descending directly in front of the 5th phase construct.
The pitch-black Relic Sword materialised back in his hand, coated in thick, roaring despair flames. Axel threw his entire weight into a straight, lethal thrust aimed directly at the entity’s chest.
The 5th phase invisible entity didn’t panic. With unbelievable speed, it swept its left hand upward, striking the flat side of Axel’s blade.
The collision redirected the full force of Axel’s thrust harmlessly into the empty air, while a wave of dense psychic pressure washed over the blade, instantly extinguishing the black flames burning along its edge.
Before Axel could recover his balance, the construct stepped inside his guard and drove a heavy, straight punch into his abdomen.
BANG!
The shockwave rattled Axel’s internal organs, knocking the breath from his lungs and launching him backwards through the air.
He tried to twist in mid-air to stabilise himself, but before he could regain his footing, thick invisible chains materialised out of the surrounding space. They wrapped violently around his wrists, his ankles, his torso, and his wings, pinning him in mid-air in a tight cross-lock.
Axel gritted his teeth, pulling against the bindings with all his strength, but the chains held firm.
Below him, the forty 4th phase entities seized the opportunity. Recognising that he was immobilised, they surged upward, their weapons and spell circles glowing with lethal power as they prepared to unleash their strongest attacks all at once.
Axel violently pushed his demonic energy outward, attempting to create a defensive shockwave to disrupt their approach. But the invisible chains wrapped around his body possessed a secondary property... they acted like energy dampers, suppressing the flow of his mana network and constricting his core output.
A split second later, the concentrated barrage of forty 4th phase attacks slammed directly into him.
Elemental beams, psychic blades, and destructive force vectors tore into his body. The explosions lit up the dark domain, tearing through his dark grey skin, rending his muscle tissue, and shattering his outer shoulder armour.
Black blood sprayed into the air, dripping onto the invisible chains that held him suspended.
The 5th phase construct glided slowly through the smoke, raising a hand to deliver a final, decisive strike to shatter his skull.
To any normal warrior, receiving injuries of that severity while completely immobilised would mean absolute defeat. But severely wounding a demon was one of the most fatal mistakes an opponent could make in battle.
Demons were not feared across Eldarion simply because of their brutality. They were terrifying because their combat potential scaled with pain and damage. The deeper their wounds, the faster their blood burned. And Axel was not an ordinary demon—he was the very Demon of Despair.
The invisible chains bound his physical limbs, suppressing his strength and dampening his standard energy channels. But they could do nothing to suppress the conceptual authority residing in his soul.
Axel lifted his battered head, his blood-stained fangs baring in a brutal grin. He opened his jaw wide, his throat expanding as his two beating hearts thundered in sync inside his chest.
He let out a deafening, raw roar.
ROAAAAAAAAAR!
It wasn’t a simple vocal shockwave. It was an explosive release of pure, unadulterated Despair... an emotional tempest forged from his own suffering and merged with the horrific dread of the billions of souls he had absorbed within himself.
The wave of sound and dark energy crashed over the surrounding space like a sledgehammer.
Even though these abstract entities were emotionless puppets forged from psychic energy, devoid of true souls or living minds, the sheer weight of the Sin pierced directly into their core matrix.
These constructs had been dead for decades or centuries, their artificial spirits preserved only as combat tools. They had long forgotten what it felt like to experience emotion.
When the overwhelming weight of ’Despair’ smashed into their psychic structures, it acted like a sudden poison.
The forty 4th phase entities froze mid-air, their floating bodies trembling violently as the conceptual emotion tore through their stability. Even the 5th phase construct faltered, its posture breaking as its spatial barrier flickered out of existence.
Thin spiderweb-like cracks began to split across the surface of their invisible bodies.
The structural damage was subtle, almost imperceptible to the naked eye. But through his mutated Runic Eyes, Axel saw every single fracture line light up like a glowing map across the sky.
