Seeing her son collapsed on the floor in tears, she hurriedly rushed to his side and grabbed his face in her warm hands. "Son? SON! What is the matter? What is wrong with you? Are you okay?"
Only then did Ken’s mind snap out of its horrific trance. The frantic touch of his mother brought him back to reality, but he was instantly overwhelmed by fear for her safety.
He knew the wrathful Demon was determined to destroy his family no matter the cost.
He slowly turned his head and finally looked his mother directly in the eyes.
This was the woman who stood at the absolute root of the Demon’s cold, unyielding wrath. Ken gritted his teeth as a turbulent storm of conflicting emotions surged through his chest.
Ken hated her for the unforgivable things she had done to Axel’s mother, Myra.
Ken hated her for creating an unstoppable monster whose power could no longer be contained by anyone in this world.
Ken hated her for not finishing the job years ago, for failing to kill Axel Nomrad on that fateful day alongside his mother.
If she had simply killed the boy back then, they would not be trapped in this inescapable net of pure despair.
Yet, regardless of how many atrocities or sins his mother had committed against others, she was still his mother at the end of the day. He still loved her more than anything else in the world, and he was willing to go to any length to protect her from harm.
Every time he attempted to think of a scheme, a method of retaliation, or a way to resolve this crisis, the near-endless ocean of dark demonic power he could feel through his bloodline connection made him shudder to his very bones.
The sheer difference in strength made all human planning seem completely pathetic.
Tears spilt continuously from his eyes as he stared at his mother. Without another word, he leaned forward and hugged her tightly around the shoulders.
Duchess Livia’s heart lurched in pain seeing such intense suffering from her son.
Assuming he was simply terrified of the siege outside, she gently stroked his hair and tried to comfort him with a soft, reassuring tone. "Son, it is okay. Why are you crying like that? The situation is truly not as dire as it seems. Your father is one of the strongest fifth phase beings in all of humanity."
"No matter how powerful the enemy outside might be, they will not prevail against him. Trust me, everything will be fine," Livia added softly, pressing her cheek against his shoulder.
Ken let out a mirthless, bitter laugh amidst his tears upon hearing those comforting words. The tragic irony of her confidence tore at his heart.
Livia Dusker frowned harder, completely unable to understand why her son was behaving in such a bizarre and hopeless manner. She pulled back slightly, looking into his tear-stained face, and asked, "Son, do you know something I do not? Please, tell me what is happening!"
Ken took a long, shaky breath to calm his raging emotions. He slowly pulled back from her embrace, giving her one last look filled with profound sadness, and spoke in a solemn, quiet voice. "Do not worry, mother. I... I will protect you. No matter what happens."
Livia’s eyes narrowed in confusion. Just as she opened her mouth to ask what he meant, she felt a sudden cold sensation around her arm. A specialised artefact brace had been swiftly strapped onto her forearm.
It happened with such incredible speed that she did not even realise what he was doing until the mechanism clicked into place.
All at once, the magical runes on the brace flared to life, and her powers as a third-phase seeker were completely sealed away.
The very instant her power was sapped from her veins, Ken delivered a swift, precise chop right to the back of her neck.
Livia’s eyes rolled back in shock. She gritted her teeth and tried desperately to fight off the impending dark unconsciousness, but without her seeker mana to bolster her physical body, resistance was impossible.
Livia uttered one last, faint word before her senses faded entirely into blackness. "Why...?"
Ken stood there in a silent daze for a long moment, staring down at his mother’s limp form. He used his sleeve to wipe the tears from his face, drew in a steadying breath, and stood up.
Lifting his mother’s unconscious body into his arms, he walked over to a hidden doorway concealed behind a large tapestry in his room.
He stepped through the passage, entering the hidden inner chambers of the mansion.
These reinforced rooms were designed to be used only during times of absolute emergency, as they were constructed with thick subterranean walls, stocked with abundant survival resources, and protected by ancient warding formations. It was a sanctuary where non-combatants could remain safe even if the main structure fell.
Ken carefully laid Duchess Livia down upon a soft resting cot inside the safe room. He stared at her calm, sleeping face for several seconds, giving her one final, deep look. Stepping back into the corridor, he closed the heavy iron door and locked the mechanism securely from the outside.
Turning away, he slowly began walking up the long stone stairs that led directly toward the very roof of the Ducal estate.
Along the way, several guards and powerful retainers of the Ducal household tried to intercept him, deeply concerned for his safety amidst the escalating chaos. However, Ken merely directed a cold, hollow look toward them.
That single, lifeless gaze carried such a heavy weight of despair that it shut down all noise, leaving the guards frozen in place as he passed by without saying a word.
The moment he stepped out onto the open marble roof, he saw that a massive rift had already been torn open in the Duke’s protective barrier.
Through the distorted distortion field, he could catch blurry glimpses of the terrifying battle shaking the sky in the distance, where three immense powers clashed continuously.
