Chapter 193: Chapter 193: The Threshold

Chapter 193: The Threshold

The cavern air grew so dense it became physically difficult to breathe.

The King Level Beast was rapidly siphoning the ancient, raw life force directly from the roots of the World Tree.

The colossal, million-eyed heart began to violently shrink. The dark matter and the stolen magic fused together in a horrifying, explosive mutation.

The Beast tore itself free from the ceiling chains. It crashed onto the obsidian ridge.

It was no longer a beating heart or a shadowy spider. It stood fifty feet tall. It was a colossal, twisted treant constructed from rotting wood and highly condensed dark matter. Sickly, glowing red sap bled freely from the cracks in its bark.

Horrifying insectoid features warped the corrupted wood. Thick, jagged plates of black chitin layered over its chest.

Six massive, multi-jointed legs resembling a praying mantis stabbed into the obsidian floor. A cluster of glowing red compound eyes blinked wildly on its featureless, wooden face.

The sheer pressure of the Phase Two mutation flooded the cavern with raw mana.

Behind the Captain, two heavy thuds echoed softly.

Nyx and Lucien collapsed onto the hard stone. Their eyes were rolled back. Their bodies were completely rigid.

The massive spike in ambient energy had violently triggered their Level 100 Awakenings. They were entirely comatose, trapped in the vulnerable transition phase.

The Captain stood alone.

He was trapped inside the failing, middle-aged host body of a Nordic guard named Haldor. He wore a cheap set of shattered, blood-soaked iron chainmail. His bearded, scarred face was pale and covered in cold sweat.

He tasted hot copper in the back of his throat. His lungs were bleeding.

The twisted insectoid treant locked its compound eyes onto the three humans. It raised a massive, chitin-plated wooden scythe.

The Beast lunged forward with terrifying speed.

The Captain did not step back. He stepped directly over the paralyzed bodies of his squadmates. He pushed his failing host body past the brink of mortal limitations.

[Vector Manipulation]

He could not use a massive, cavern-wide kinetic shield. Haldor’s fractured mana channels would instantly explode. He had to rely on microscopic, pinpoint deflections.

The massive wooden scythe swept down toward his head.

The Captain raised his bare, trembling hands. He caught the very edge of the kinetic momentum. He violently altered the trajectory of the strike by a mere three degrees.

CRASH!

The scythe missed his shoulder by an inch, smashing deeply into the obsidian floor.

The physical feedback from redirecting a multi-ton attack transferred directly into his arms.

SNAP!

The radius bone in the Captain’s left forearm fractured instantly. He did not scream. He did not flinch. He gritted his teeth and tapped into his core.

[Cellular Suture]

He applied extreme microscopic pressure to his own broken bone. He forcefully clamped the jagged splinters together, using raw friction to bind his arm so he could keep fighting. It was an agonizing, barbaric medical patch.

The Beast shrieked, swinging its other bladed limbs.

The Captain activated his passive [Kinetic Mana Circulation Technique]. He drew a tiny, desperate trickle of energy from the air.

He sidestepped a lethal thrust. He aimed his right hand at the joints of the insectoid treant.

[Spatial Rend]

He compressed the surrounding air into an invisible, hyper-dense blade. He fired it directly at the creature’s front leg.

His Arsonist title provided a minor boost, allowing him to instinctually target the structural weak points of the corrupted wood.

SHNK!

The spatial blade severed the joint cleanly. Dark sap sprayed across the ridge.

The monster roared in pain. It stumbled, but its remaining five legs quickly compensated. It opened its jagged, wooden maw and unleashed a localized barrage of hardened, needle-like splinters.

The Captain spun on his heel. He grabbed the kinetic vectors of the flying splinters and pushed them outward. He deflected most of the barrage, but his host body was simply too slow.

Three dark splinters pierced straight through his cheap iron chainmail. They buried deep into his stomach and thigh.

COUGH!

The Captain hacked violently, spitting a fresh pool of dark blood onto the black stone. He dropped to one knee. His vision flickered rapidly between the dark cavern and total blackness.

He refused to fall. He dragged himself back to his feet, planting himself firmly in front of Nyx and Lucien.

Deep within her own mind, Nyx Vespera was completely unaware of the bleeding man protecting her.

She stood in a vast, endless void of beautiful, comforting darkness. Standing before her was the ancient spirit of the Phantom-Weaver. The spirit held out a magnificent, towering crown forged entirely from pure, liquid shadows.

"Accept your birthright," the Phantom-Weaver whispered.

"Take the crown. Awaken as the true Queen of the Abyss. You will never feel helpless again."

The temptation was incredibly powerful. The sheer, intoxicating promise of limitless power sang to her soul. She reached her hand toward the dark crown.

Then, she remembered a cold, raspy voice.

’You will force the energy to remain locked inside your core. We only unseal our powers when we are safe.’

Nyx pulled her hand back. She closed her eyes and screamed in mental agony. She forcefully rejected the Phantom-Weaver.

She grabbed the swelling cosmic energy inside her mind and brutally crushed it downward, fighting a desperate war to seal her own threshold.

In a different mental dimension, Lucien stood upon a mountain peak.

A raging, glorious thunderstorm swirled around him. A massive, warm golden doorway hovered in the sky. A booming voice echoed from the clouds.

"Step through the gate," the voice thundered.

"Shed your mortal limits. Claim the title of the Lightning God."

Lucien looked at the golden door. It radiated pure, infinite strength. He could feel the electricity begging to break free from his mortal shell.

Lucien gripped the imaginary hilt of his rapier.

"My loyalty belongs to the Captain," Lucien declared to the storm.

He turned his back on the golden door. He gritted his teeth and forcefully chained the lightning back into his heart. The internal pressure felt like a dying star trying to explode inside his chest.

Back in the physical world, the Captain was losing his war.

The insectoid treant raised all of its remaining scythes. It gathered a massive, highly unstable sphere of corrupted sap and dark matter directly in front of its maw. It was preparing an execution strike designed to wipe the entire obsidian ridge from existence.

The Captain stood bathed in his own blood.

The host body named Haldor was completely ruined. The internal organs were hemorrhaging. The bones were shattered.

He had one move left.

The Captain closed his gray, scarred eyes. He grabbed the final, desperate reserves of mana circulating in his core.

He aggressively compressed the energy, packing it tighter and tighter until his chest felt like it was going to burst.

He opened his eyes.

[Seed of Valor: Event Horizon]

The universe did not make a sound. It simply felt a catastrophic shift in reality.

The Captain converted his entire mana reserve into a singular, localized gravitational vector centered directly on the massive Beast.

He increased the gravity to an unimaginable, horrifying density. He mimicked the core of a black hole.

The world violently drained of color. The cavern was left in a stark, silent canvas of black and white.

The massive sphere of dark matter froze exactly three feet from the Captain’s face. The colossal, mutated treant was completely paralyzed. The Beast was locked perfectly in place, its mind awake but its body crushed by halted time.

The Captain took a slow, agonizing step forward.

Because he was the master of kinetic vectors, he dictated the direction of the gravity. He was the only moving thing inside the frozen world.

He walked up to the paralyzed, towering monster. He raised his blood-soaked right gauntlet. He aimed his palm directly at the insectoid chitin protecting the Beast’s core.

He inverted the gravitational vectors inside the Beast’s own chest.

CRUNCH!

The thick wooden bark and the dark matter plates violently collapsed inward. The hyper-dense corruption was crushed by overwhelming internal gravity. A massive, gaping hole was ripped straight through the monster’s torso.

The physical toll was too much.

The Captain’s heart violently seized. The host body could not survive the output of a domain skill. Haldor’s lungs completely collapsed.

The time-stop shattered.

Color flooded back into the cavern. The Captain dropped hard to the obsidian floor, his body going entirely limp in a pool of his own blood.

The King Level Beast shrieked in terrible agony. Its chest was blown wide open, exposing the ruined, million-eyed heart within.

The monster was dying, but it was not dead. It raised a single, jagged scythe. It brought the blade down to execute the unconscious man lying in the blood.

CLANG!

A blinding flash of blue lightning intercepted the scythe.

Lucien stood over the Captain. The swordsman’s eyes were glowing with terrifying, sealed electricity. He held his silver rapier high, effortlessly blocking the multi-ton strike with a single, elegant parry.

A pitch-black shadow rose directly behind the Beast’s ruined chest.

Nyx materialized from the dark. Her eyes shone with a pure, concentrated white light. Her physical aura was terrifyingly heavy.

They had successfully sealed their Awakenings. They were fully conscious, radiating the contained, explosive power of Level 100 elites.

Nyx raised her void-steel daggers. She looked down at the bleeding, broken man who had just traded his life to protect them.

"Nobody touches our Captain," Nyx whispered.

She plunged her blades directly into the Beast’s exposed, million-eyed heart.
