Chapter 132: Chapter 132
Lucy got bullied by the girls.
As punishment, she was forced to spend an entire day wearing the maid outfit around the women’s dormitory while enduring endless teasing from the others.
Lucy felt terribly wronged.
Fortunately, idiots rarely held grudges.
Once the incident passed, Lucy quickly went back to laughing and messing around with everyone as though nothing had happened.
Perhaps that was what people meant when they said fools were blessed by fortune.
Compared with someone who obsessed over every slight and dreamed of revenge, Lucy’s personality made it much easier for her to fit into Fairy Tail.
Setting Lucy aside, once the next guild meeting was held a month later, her observation period would be over.
As long as she received enough approval from the members, she could move on to the next stage.
Marshall might enjoy tormenting Lucy, but he wouldn’t deliberately obstruct something like that.
At that point, it would stop being playful teasing and become genuine bullying.
Marshall wasn’t shameless enough to do that.
He had been quite pleased after dealing with Duke Everlue.
What happened afterward, however, was completely unexpected.
He was granted a noble title!
"...In recognition of Mr. Marshall’s outstanding contributions to the Kingdom of Fiore, His Majesty hereby grants him the lifelong honorary title of Baron, with Magnolia designated as his territory..."
Marshall lowered the royal decree in his hands and stared at Makarov.
Question marks might as well have been floating above his head.
"Master, what exactly did you do behind the scenes?"
"How did I suddenly become a noble?"
"This doesn’t make any sense!"
Makarov looked equally confused.
"I didn’t do anything!"
"That’s what has me puzzled too."
"I hadn’t even started pulling strings yet. The king simply sent the decree on his own."
As Fairy Tail’s Guild Master, Makarov had dealt with plenty of nobles over the years.
None of them had ever been this cooperative.
The entire situation felt suspicious no matter how he looked at it.
Still, the decree had already arrived.
Marshall could hardly storm into the royal capital, kidnap the king, and demand an explanation.
Surely the royal family hadn’t somehow predicted that Marshall might eventually overthrow the kingdom or something equally ridiculous.
He didn’t understand it.
"So what exactly does being a baron mean?"
Marshall scratched his head.
"Do I get some ridiculous medieval privilege over every unmarried woman in Magnolia or something?"
Makarov immediately smacked him over the head.
"Wake up you stupid brat!"
"What century do you think this is?!"
"You now hold legal ownership over Magnolia’s territory, along with taxation rights, certain judicial authority, and several other administrative privileges."
"The mayor can explain the details to you later."
Makarov paused.
"But Marshall, are you sure you want to accept the title?"
"Are there any disadvantages to it?"
"Uh... not particularly."
"You could probably lower the residents’ taxes if you wanted."
"Then why wouldn’t I accept it?"
Marshall shrugged.
"It sounds like a good thing."
"Now Fairy Tail can finally renovate Magnolia however we want without some idiot noble constantly interfering with us!"
Since there didn’t appear to be any meaningful downside, Marshall had absolutely no intention of refusing free authority.
Makarov changed the subject.
"The Guild Masters’ meeting starts the day after tomorrow."
Marshall raised an eyebrow.
"Anything interesting you’re planning to tell them this time?"
"Interesting?"
Makarov narrowed his eyes.
"Marshall, you’d better not be thinking about casually revealing any of our confidential projects."
"That’s called leaking secrets."
"Ahem."
Marshall looked away.
"I was only thinking of giving you some material to brag about."
Makarov snorted.
"Since you’re so thoughtful, teleport me to the meeting hall."
"I don’t feel like taking the train."
Marshall immediately shook his head.
"No."
"What do you think I am?"
"I’m out of magic to learn!"
Makarov silently pulled out a spellbook.
"This contains Fairy Law."
Marshall’s eyes lit up.
He instantly straightened his back.
"Master! If there’s one virtue engraved into my very bones, it’s respect for the old!"
"Where would you like to go?"
"Say the word and I’ll have you there!"
"The main entrance of the meeting hall in Clover Town."
Makarov tucked his hands behind his back.
"The conference lasts three days."
"You’ll need to pick me up afterward too."
"No problem~"
Marshall swiftly secured his precious new spellbook.
Then he snapped his fingers.
An oval-shaped spatial gate appeared in front of them, its other side opening directly outside the venue for the Guild Masters’ meeting.
Makarov couldn’t help feeling envious of Marshall’s talent for Spatial Magic.
He had once thought Mest possessed extraordinary aptitude in that field.
Yet Marshall was barely in his teens and had already surpassed Mest by an enormous margin.
The younger generation truly was terrifying.
Spatial Magic was simply too convenient!
...
With Makarov away at the meeting and Laxus absent as well, Fairy Tail was effectively under Marshall’s authority for the time being.
His Heavenly Body Magic was already extremely close to Level Three.
At the current rate, he estimated another week or two would be enough.
He had also finally obtained Fairy Law.
Once Heavenly Body Magic reached Level Three, he could properly learn Fairy Glitter as well.
At that point, he would possess all three of Fairy Tail’s Great Magics.
Surely that would be enough for him to surpass Laxus.
The day when no one of his generation could rival him was rapidly approaching!
Humming cheerfully, Marshall headed downstairs.
A large crowd had gathered on the first floor.
He took a closer look.
"Huh?"
Was that... Reedus?
Had the man finally emerged from seclusion?
"Reedus-sensei! I’m a huge fan! Please give me your autograph!"
"Me too! I want a picture!"
"So the legendary artist behind Naruto really is a member of Fairy Tail!"
"That’s incredible! Why haven’t we seen you around before?"
"Reedus-sensei, I heard Naruto is almost finished! Have you decided what your next manga will be?"
Reedus looked completely different from the man Marshall remembered.
His beard had grown wild, his body was noticeably thinner, and his face carried the weathered expression of someone who had endured years of hardship.
He calmly surveyed the fans surrounding him.
"I’ve already finished drawing Naruto."
"And I will never draw manga again!"
He paused.
"I am not a manga artist."
"NANIII?!"
The crowd erupted in disbelief.
Reedus looked past them and noticed Marshall descending the stairs.
His expression immediately became complicated.
"Long time no see, Reedus."
Marshall waved cheerfully.
"Yeah."
Reedus sighed.
"It has been a long time."
"But you’ll probably be seeing a lot more of me from now on."
"Marshall, my commission is finally finished."
"I don’t think I’ll ever draw manga again."
His expression became unusually serious.
"Are you going to blame me?"
"Blame you?"
Marshall blinked.
"Why would I?"
"That’s your decision, Reedus."
"I’m not going to interfere with your freedom."
Then Marshall gave him a closer look and smiled.
"Still... you seem to have gained quite a lot from the experience."
"Can I take some credit for that?"
Under Marshall’s perception, Reedus’s magic power had already climbed close to ten thousand units.
He now stood only slightly behind the tier occupied by Natsu and Gray.
That was quite impressive considering Reedus was already twenty-seven and had never possessed particularly outstanding magical talent.
Reedus rolled his eyes.
"I absolutely refuse to thank you for that."
"You have no idea what kind of hell I went through."
"But..."
He casually pulled out a pen and drew something in midair.
A small Nine-Tails sprang into existence.
The miniature fox landed on the floor and immediately bared its teeth at everyone nearby.
Marshall’s eyes narrowed.
That drawing speed... wasn’t that a little ridiculous?
Could Reedus’s Pict Magic have reached Level Four?
"My magic did improve quite a lot."
Reedus put away his pen.
"But I don’t really need to take jobs for money anymore."
"So I’ve decided to become a half-retired old man and spend my days hanging around the guild."
Marshall laughed.
"Hahaha! Master definitely won’t object."
The two were still chatting when Gray pushed open the guildhall doors.
As usual, he wasn’t wearing a shirt.
This time, however, his expression was unusually serious.
"Is Master here?"
"I have something important to report."
