Chapter 133: Chapter 133
Marshall looked thoughtfully at Gray.
"Master? He just left for the Guild Masters’ meeting. Did you need him for something?"
Gray scratched his head, visibly irritated.
"He already left? Forget it, then. You S-Class guys can make the decision instead."
"Let’s talk somewhere private."
Gray pulled Marshall, Erza, and Mira into a separate room and got straight to the point.
"On my way back from a job, I overheard something pretty bad."
"A group that sounded like they belonged to a dark guild was talking about breaking the seal on some magic called Lullaby."
"At first, I didn’t think much of it. But after thinking it over, I’m pretty sure they mentioned the name Erigor."
"Erza, you recognize that name, right?"
Erza thought for a moment.
"Erigor the Reaper?"
"I remember him. He’s the ace of Eisenwald."
"But Eisenwald was expelled from the guild alliance six years ago and became a dark guild. Their Guild Master was eventually arrested."
"Exactly. So I remembered correctly."
Gray frowned.
"If even a dark guild has to go through the trouble of breaking a seal on something, I doubt it’s harmless."
"I wanted to ask Master how we should handle it, but of course he picked today to leave for a meeting..."
"Should we contact him through the terminal?"
He hesitated.
"Actually, this probably isn’t the kind of subject we should discuss over an ordinary connection."
"There’s no need. I can look it up."
Marshall summoned Super Archive and entered a single search term:
Lullaby.
Information immediately appeared before him.
"Lullaby is one of the demons from the Books of Zeref."
"It was transformed by Zeref into a demonic flute shaped like a three-eyed skull."
"It possesses a curse capable of killing victims through sound on a large scale and is therefore known as Lullaby, the Cursed Song."
"..."
Erza, Mira, and Gray nodded together.
"So it’s a demon."
Then Gray realized what they had just said.
"Wait! That’s really bad!"
Marshall casually cleaned one ear with his little finger.
"Why are you getting so worked up?"
"It’s only a demon."
"Mira has Taken Over one before."
"But it’s one of the demons from the Books of Zeref!"
Gray nearly shouted.
"According to the records, demons from the Books of Zeref generally possess one defining curse."
Marshall continued reading.
"Lullaby’s mass-death curse sounds frightening, but it’s actually difficult to use against people with sufficiently powerful magic."
"Super Archive also describes Lullaby as a relatively weak demon whose curse is primarily dangerous to ordinary people."
"There’s no need to panic."
"But..."
Gray was unusually restless.
He paced back and forth across the room before abruptly turning toward Marshall.
"Marshall, come with us."
"Let’s wipe Eisenwald out completely!"
"Demons that bring this kind of disaster into the world should all be destroyed!"
"..."
Marshall finally remembered something Ultear had told him about her past.
Ultear’s mother, Ur, had been Gray’s teacher in the northern continent.
And Ur’s "death" had been caused by using the forbidden spell Iced Shell to seal away another demon from the Books of Zeref—
Deliora.
Ultear had recently begun trying to undo her mother’s seal and had even asked Marshall for assistance.
Personally, Marshall thought that after so many years, Ur was probably long dead.
Still, he hadn’t refused.
He had simply told Ultear to contact him once she was ready to begin.
So Marshall could understand why Gray hated demons so much.
Even so...
"It’s just one dark guild filled with nobodies."
Marshall shrugged.
"Do you really need all three of us S-Class Mages for this?"
It wasn’t prejudice against dark guilds.
It was simply reality.
Unless a genuinely powerful Mage had an especially twisted personality, they usually had little reason to spend their life hiding inside some obscure dark guild.
Most dark-guild Mages were relatively weak and survived by keeping out of sight.
Erigor might have the intimidating title of the Reaper, but Marshall suspected his actual strength wasn’t anything special.
Compared with Eisenwald, Marshall was considerably more interested in Lullaby itself.
"I’m not going."
He waved lazily.
"You guys handle it."
"If you somehow run into something you can’t beat, just call me. I can appear beside you instantly~"
Gray clicked his tongue.
"Tch. Marshall, you lazy bastard..."
He turned toward Erza.
"Fine. Erza, will you come?"
"Of course."
Erza looked toward Mira.
"Mira, are you joining us?"
"I’ll pass."
Mira smiled.
"Master is away, so there are plenty of things I need to handle here."
"Although..."
She glanced at Gray, and a mischievous idea suddenly occurred to her.
Mira clasped her hands together and smiled sweetly.
"Why don’t you bring Natsu with you?"
"If the three of you form a team, you’ll practically be Fairy Tail’s Strongest Team~"
"That works."
"What?! No way! I’m not teaming up with that flame-brained idiot!"
Erza and Gray answered at exactly the same time.
Erza slowly turned toward him.
"Hm?"
"Gray, do you have an objection?"
Gray immediately wilted.
"N-No."
"I’ll... get along with Natsu."
Marshall and Mira nearly doubled over laughing.
Gray and Natsu, two idiots who could barely remain in the same room without fighting, paired with Erza, whose preferred solution to most obstacles involved overwhelming force...
If those three genuinely worked together, they could probably reduce an entire city to rubble.
Marshall desperately wanted to know what expression Makarov would make when he found out.
He and Mira exchanged a glance.
They reached the same conclusion without needing to say a word.
At a moment like this, how could they possibly forget their newest victim?
Marshall narrowed his eyes and offered a helpful suggestion.
"Why not take one of the newcomers along too?"
"Lucy has a lot of potential you know~"
Erza frowned.
"Would that be appropriate?"
"We’re going after a dark guild. It could be dangerous."
"Don’t worry, Erza."
"I personally tested Lucy’s abilities."
Marshall smiled innocently.
"She’s a very capable Celestial Spirit Mage. She can protect herself without any problem."
"All right."
Erza trusted Marshall’s judgment.
"If that’s your recommendation, we’ll take her too."
"I’ll notify Natsu and Lucy. We leave tomorrow morning."
She turned toward Gray.
"Gray, come with me."
"Yes..."
Gray followed the decisive Erza out of the room with his head hanging.
Behind them, Marshall and Mira—the smiling duo responsible for the whole disaster—cheerfully waved goodbye.
"Good luck~"
The instant the door closed, Mira’s expression transformed into barely contained excitement.
"Marshall, what if I tell Master right now that those three have formed a team?"
"Do you think he’ll panic badly enough to abandon the meeting and rush back?"
"Hahaha~"
"No, no."
Marshall waved a finger.
"That would ruin the surprise."
"We should send him a letter instead."
"Make sure it arrives tomorrow while the meeting is in progress."
He grinned wickedly.
"Hopefully the old man’s heart can take it."
"Hehehe... I should contact Guild Master Goldmine and ask him to take a picture of Master’s face when he reads it."
Mira burst out laughing.
"Hahaha! Marshall, you’re terrible~"
Then her smile turned delighted.
"But I like it~"
"You flatter me."
Marshall accepted the compliment without shame.
Then he remembered something.
"By the way, Mira."
"Do you want to Take Over that flute demon?"
Mira considered it for a moment, then shook her head.
"No."
"The mass-death curse is forbidden by the Magic Council."
"And from what I understand, it only works reliably against people weaker than the caster."
"That’s far too limited."
"Taking it over probably wouldn’t improve my strength much."
"Fair enough."
Marshall nodded.
"If you don’t want it, I’ll capture it for research."
A trace of genuine curiosity entered his eyes.
"I’ve always been interested in the demons from the Books of Zeref..."
