April
When Angel asked me to go out with her, I thought it was just going to be a simple, quiet date with her and Terror.
Instead, it turned out to be a double date, or honestly, I should probably call it a triple date considering the cats.
We were sitting inside a nice restaurant located right in the middle of the district, and sitting directly across from us happened to be the exact two people I had been desperately hoping not to see ever again.
I was having the absolute misfortune of running into them for the second time today.
Coco Terror and Percy happened to be over in the play corner of the restaurant, a designated section set up specifically for pets and animals. They were happily sharing a bowl of fresh tuna together, alongside a small dish of nut milk, mostly because Charlie loudly claimed at the table that cow milk makes Percy extremely gassy.
All I could do was let out a long, heavy sigh and intentionally bring my heel down hard on top of Angel’s shoes under the table.
I was beyond pissed off that she had tricked me into coming here. She knew damn well that if she had been honest about the original plan from the start, I would not have even bothered to follow her out.
"So, are you two actually in a relationship?" Tessa Johnson finally spoke up, after spending the entire meal silently glaring at me from across the table.
"You are in absolutely no position to be asking me personal questions," I snapped right back at her, keeping my posture rigid.
"Come on, are you still holding on to the past like that?" Tessa said, waving her hand dismissively. "We were literally just teenagers back then. High school shit. Just forget about all that old drama and move on with your life."
I could hardly believe the sheer nerve of this girl to sit there and say such things to my face, still proudly wearing that massive, inflated ego of hers.
I wanted to get out of this place right now.
"I brought her here because Perverto over there told me she wanted to apologize to April," Angel interjected, pointing a finger directly at Charlie. "That is the absolute only reason we agreed to eat at this table, and also that cat over there, I fully intend to adopt it."
"Who on earth are you calling Perverto?" Tessa demanded, her voice instantly hardening.
"This bitch," Angel said, keeping her finger pointed straight at Charlie’s face.
"Her name is Charlie, and she is not a pervert," Tessa said, leaning across the table as her eyes narrowed into slits. "Speak to her with some respect. You and I are not on the same level."
"Who the fuck do you think you are talk...."
Before Angel could explode and cause a massive scene inside a very crowded restaurant, I quickly reached over and grabbed her hand, squeezing it tight.
Tessa Johnson might act like some smooth, calm bitch on the outside, but she was really not the kind of Alpha anyone should mess around with lightly.
She never raises her voice, but her words sting deeply and are designed to rage-bait you into doing something stupid.
Luckily, Angel managed to calm herself down slightly. She pushed her chair back and stood up from the table to go check on Terror and Percy in the play corner, knowing full well that if she stayed at this table a second longer, she was going to vent all her rage right into Tessa’s face.
"April, I really know that you hate me because of all the terrible things we did to you back in school," Charlie said, placing her right hand flat over her chest as she looked at me. "I’m so sorry. Just like my fiancée just said, we were just foolish teenagers back then. We really had no idea what we were doing. I truly hope you can find it somewhere in your heart to let bygones be bygones."
The second the word fiancée left her lips, she deliberately adjusted her wrist to show off the shiny ring on her finger.
The moment I saw that shiny rock, I knew exactly what she was doing. This apology meant absolutely nothing to her. She just wanted a reason to throw it directly in my face that she had somehow managed to bag the single most popular Alpha in all of Kanoe High School.
Back then, every single person wanted that senior Alpha, and Charlie was the one who ended up with her.
She was just showing off her prize.
Like I care...
All I did was offer her a faint, empty smile, acting as if I was totally fine with it. I didn’t care at all about whatever achievements she thought she had made in life. I just deeply hated the fact that she had taken my school bag and burned it to ashes.
"So, I heard through that your mother ended up marrying some extremely rich Alpha lady," Tessa said, turning her cold gaze back onto me. "You are supposed to be screaming wealth with a family like that, but you really don’t look like someone who is rich at all."
"I am completely happy with the way I am," I confessed, keeping my tone steady and trying my best not to fall for her clear bait. "I don’t need any of that wealth."
Tessa’s eyes drifted away from me, scanning across the room to where Angel was now kneeling down, playing softly with Terror and mingling with Percy.
Angel actually seemed to be taking a genuine liking to that fluffy white cat now.
"I seriously hope you are not in a real relationship with that kind of Lousy Alpha," Tessa sneered, glancing back at me with clear judgment. "She doesn’t look like someone with an ounce of class. The way she dresses isn’t even remotely presentable. You really should not go making the exact same mistake your mother made in her very first marriage, marrying some penniless librarian who couldn’t even take proper care of his own family."
Hearing those cruel, personal words come out of Tessa’s mouth stung so badly that my throat locked up.
"Tessa, I truly wish you the best with all your great achievements in life," I said, forcing the words out through grit teeth. "And I really hope you learn how to talk to people properly one day."
She just snorted softly in response, pushing herself up from the table without another word. She stated that she had much more important things to attend to than staying here, then turned around and walked out of the restaurant.
"Don’t mind her," Charlie said quietly, watching her partner walk away. "She really is actually sorry for everything that happened."
"I can clearly see that you have changed a bit," I said, looking back at Charlie. "But she definitely hasn’t."
"Let’s not talk about her anymore," Charlie said, leaning forward on her elbows. "Let’s talk about you instead. I actually haven’t heard a single thing about your dad ever since you left Kanoe. But do you also happen to know that he got married to our old history teacher, and they have two kids together now? They even packed up and completely moved away from Kanoe."
My heart instantly dropped right into my stomach. "My dad isn’t living in Kanoe anymore?"
"No, my mother called me about a year ago and told me all about it," Charlie said, shaking her head. "Did your mom really not inform you about any of this?"
I sat there frozen in my chair, my mind spinning into total chaos. I had spent all this time believing my dad was still living in that town where I grew up.
If he isn’t even there anymore, how on earth am I ever going to meet him again?
